VALERIE PLAME'S HUSBAND

avatar

That's how he introduced himself to me when I walked into the room. Several of us who blog regularly were invited to meet with him face to face during his visit to Oregon on Hillary Clinton's behalf.

"Him" is Joseph C. Wilson, IV, or "Joe" Wilson as he prefers to be called. Wilson, formerly a United States Foreign Service diplomat posted to African nations and Iraq, also served as Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton, and as Senior Director for African Affairs on the United States National Security Council. Today Ambassador Wilson is the CEO of JC Wilson International Ventures, consulting in the field of strategic management and international-business development. He joined Jarch Capital, LLC in January 2007 as vice chairman, to advise in areas of Africa considered politically sensitive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_C._Wilson

Joe Wilson's "claim to fame" as he referred to it was his op-ed published in the New York Times, four months following the invasion of Iraq, titled "What I Didn't Find in Africa," referring to his 2002 CIA investigation into the purchase or attempted purchase, by Iraq, of uranium yellowcake from Niger. He concluded that the George W. Bush administration tweaked intelligence to "exaggerate the Iraqi threat," implying quite clearly that Bush lied us into the war in Iraq. This did not set well with "W" and "Dicky."

One week following the publication of his article in the NYT, Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, a covert CIA operative, was outed by Robert Novak in his Washington Post column. Scooter Libby was subsequently charged and found guilty of 4 out of 5 federal crimes relating to the leak of Plame's identity. His prison term was commuted by W, though the ongoing civil suit, Wilson v. Cheney, which was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds, is still on appeal.

I found him to be friendly, down to earth, humble, and willing to take as many pictures with us as we wanted. Most of all, I felt I was in the presence of a man who intimately understands international politics, and who recognizes those leaders who can work effectively within them.

"Why support Hillary?" we asked.

His response was swift and certain. "Experience matters; no other way around it." He went on to say that she is "easily" the "better candidate based upon an entire generation (that is, a lifetime more than Obama) working with all matters of government," including healthcare, education, international politics, the economy "and more." Using a military example, he said, "You don't hire a 20 year old to run a platoon."

Ambassador Wilson told us that her "enormous amount of time at the top (meaning her eight years of experience in the White House)" has prepared her for Presidential leadership. Wilson went on to give the example of his own area of expertise, Africa. Referring to Bill Clinton's highly successful 11-day trip to six sub-Saharan African nations in March-April of 1998 http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1998/africa/  Wilson says, "Bill's trip was Hillary's doing." Hillary, he said, had traveled there first to look the situation over, meet with leaders, and visit more than 80 countries. She came back and told Bill in no uncertain terms that he "must go there." Using the strength of her international political understanding, savvy, and influence, coupled with the relationships she had formed while there, she convinced Bill that she was right; he made the trip, and the trip made history.

Wilson emphatically insists that her talent and finesse working with legislators on both sides of the aisle have been greatly understated. He talked about Hillary, the person, the woman he and his wife came to know, trust, and rely upon. When the CIA incident occurred, the stress, exhaustion and fear almost led them to give up the fight. Had it not been for Hillary's personal support and conviction, this country and world "might never have understood what actually happened" (referring to Bush lying us into the war in Iraq). "She said to us, 'You have to stay in this fight because it's not about you.' Our country understands now (about Bush's lies), but wouldn't have if we had given up." He says that Hillary's support and encouragement led them to push through it. "She taught us something very important about not letting our anger get in the way. She said to us, 'Let go of your grievances, keep focussed on the goal, and be prepared to keep arguing for your cause.'"

Concerning Iraq, Wilson says he's been "advising her about Iraq for years," and that she understands precisely what's at stake in getting us out. He told us that Hillary has said we must get out of Iraq because the war is illegal, and we have a broken army--morale, equipment, operations and personnel. She knows we must:
- continue our awareness of the war on terror as we move troops
- guaranty the security of Israel
- secure petroleum while working toward less need of it
- hold the Iraqi government to their agreements and responsibilities
- watch the international political process - they are involved as well
- sustain Presidential leadership
- engage the senior Presidential envoy

She was the one US Senator asked by the top US "brass" to participate in a meeting held to determine a way to fix our broken military. "They said she is the 'best prepared of any politician they know.' She understands the arcane details of how to move troops, how to maintain her leadership within the process, and how to remain in her own power when dealing with other countries and making hard decisions."

Wilson knows first hand what the Right Wing machine can dole out, and he says, because of her having dealt with this machine so successfully, she is the best candidate to deal with it and win. "The Republicans have 350 million dollars that they will use to define Obama, and they will use it to define him in ways he can't even imagine."

Regarding Hillary as a Progressive Democrat, Wilson says Hillary has always stood for and fought for progressive programs such as healthcare, education, early childhood education, pro-choice issues, etc. He states emphatically that Hillary is "a fighter who does not get bored with the necessity of getting up every day to win this nomination. Over the years, she has been an exceptional leader, empowering others, and teaching us all how to stay in the ring. There is no evidence that Obama has done anything of major consequence in his Senate experience that makes him any different from any other average politician."

Concerning his personal relationship with Hillary, Wilson states that she has been an amazing friend and strong support to both he and his wife. "When we get together, the first thing she mentions are our kids; we talk about them for a while before any campaign conversation even comes up. She takes Valerie aside for pep talks. 'Don't give up, push through this' she'll say. It would be easy for us to walk away from the campaign and the constant barrage of attention we still get. But we're in this for her because she is the right candidate, and we won't give up."

Unfortunately, no one will recommend your excellent post while a post titled Hillary is the anti-christ will get a 100 recommendations.

What? Hillary is the anti-christ? Wow, I suspected as much, but hadn't heard it was confirmed. I think I'm going to recommend this post just to give that news some wider exposure!

Thanks for the great compliment. I figure if anyone is starting to question their choice of Obama, this information couldn't hurt.

His response was swift and certain. "Experience matters; no other way around it."

Last I checked, she has no experience as the President. Here might be a reason why he supports her:

Concerning Iraq, Wilson says he's been "advising her about Iraq for years,"

Think there might be a little self-interest involved?

In fact, Hillary's "experience" is tied to a dynasty tie to high-finance, similar to that of the Bushes with oil. This is precisely the reason *not* to put another Clinton in the White House.

As far as the "experience" argument: in fact, historically, the reverse is true. The most experienced people put in the White House tend to be among our worse presidents (e.g. Buchanan), while those with the least experience tend to be our best (e.g. Lincoln).

Oh, and the Clinton's used to argue *against* experience when Bill Clinton ran in 1992. That's when he had no national experience at all (not even in Congress) while GWHB had a huge resume including ex-director of the CIA, first ambassador to mainland China, ex-VP, and sitting President.

And yet, when Bill ran, he told the nation to discount all of *that*!

Wilson needs to come up with a new reason.

By the way, I'm recommending this post because it's interesting.

As you've noted, Wilson knows first hand what the Right Wing machine can dole out.

And he's proven himself no slouch at practicing the methods learned. Random selections from his oeuvre:

Wilson apparently wound up working for Democrats due to "happenstance" ... so I suspect it's not happenstance that he seems so comfortable attacking a Democratic nominee as fiercely as he has.

No, actually, he worked under the Clinton administration long before W lied. I would think you have a bit more respect for the man who, at great risk (and rightly so) exposed the biggest bunch of political crooks we've ever had.

Yeah, lying about what he found in Niger was soooo risky. Got him on the cover of Vanity Fair, though, so I guess everything worked out for brave Joe. What a tool.

I think it is fair to say that this is an overall biographical description that simply could not be credibly written about Sen. Obama. Whatever his merits, he just has not spent enough time in the game to stack-up well in the "nuts and bolts" department.

Am I saying this is DECISIVE? Of course not. I AM saying it is worthy of an intelligent effort at comparison and contrast.

Hillary has the greatest resume ever!

Yawn. If that's the case why was she afraid to stand up to Bush on Iraq when it might have actally made a difference? Why is she afraid of meeting with our adversaries? oh never mind....

Hillary doesn't base her foreign policy decisions on experience but on domestic political exigency. We have tons of examples of this.

Kudos to Hillary for also having her own republican supporters.

THANK YOU!!! THIS IS WONDERFUL.

I agree with Mr. Wilson. We need someone like Hillary Clinton as President to stop this illegal and immoral war. She's the only one who can do that.

Thank god she voted against the invasion when it was proposed in Congress. That vote gives her the political cover to take aim at this war and repeatedly say that this isn't something she ever agreed with. IN fact, since it is an illegal war she can bring charges against Bush, Cheney, and any member of Congress who voted to invade a country that did not attack us or have the means to attack us.

Hillary '08! The new math wins!

Well, at least one person is loyal to the Clintons.

You gotta be loyal before you can pull off the Judas routine.

I just love all the false arguments in this. No evidence that Obama has done anything in the Senate; Hillary has all this vast experience because she was close to Bill; Bill did things because Hillary told him to, or paved the way, or took the hits for him; she understands all these arcane, complex things that the rest of us mere mortals can't even begin to comprehend, etc. etc. Whatever.

Joe Wilson is the worst thing that could have happened to the anti-war movement. That clown's lying and blatant self-aggrandizement was just the thing to discredit those opposed to the war. Funny how everyone who's been an embarrassment to the party ends up in the Clinton camp.

avatar

so if Joe Wilson has been such a close friend and advisor to Senator Clinton, then why didn't he advise her that the Niger story was a cock-up and to vote against the war in Iraq? That is what I find so mystifying about Joe Wilson.

BINGO! DING! DING! DING! -Give that man a 'ceegar'

Hits it right on the head. Either she ignored his advice and voted for the war anyway or he's full of sh*t.

My bet is on the latter. Wilson has become the perfect fawning sycophant to Hillary -valuing and displaying loyalty above anything and willing to say anything to get her elected.

His last HuffPo column where he tried to feign outrage at Obama's comment that on these state sponsored trips (the ones Hillary touts as "experience" like Tuzla) the politicians are "given a briefing by the local CIA bureau chief and embassy staff" was some how a slam on embassy staff and CIA was truly pathetic and(almost) better than an Onion piece.

avatar

well thank you, Tom. (I'm female btw.)

"As far as the "experience" argument: in fact, historically, the reverse is true. The most experienced people put in the White House tend to be among our worse presidents (e.g. Buchanan), while those with the least experience tend to be our best (e.g. Lincoln)."

How do you explain Bushit? By ignoring the fact that he is a Buchanan with no experience, and is no Lincoln.

Is stupidity the norm for those who hate and attack Hillary exactly as the Reich-Wing does? --

"so if Joe Wilson has been such a close friend and advisor to Senator Clinton, then why didn't he advise her that the Niger story was a cock-up and to vote against the war in Iraq? That is what I find so mystifying about Joe Wilson."

Because, ass, he wasn't advising her at that point. Re-read what he said: she came into the picture AFTER Plame was outed.

"Concerning Iraq, Wilson says he's been "advising her about Iraq for years," " He's been advising her on Iraq for years and obviously he gave her bad advice if she still voted for the war. You read what was written. And calling people names only reflects on you.

Re-read what he said: she came into the picture AFTER Plame was outed.

No, actually he said:

Concerning Iraq, Wilson says he's been "advising her about Iraq for years,"

You're letting your anger cloud your reason -he said nothing about advising Hillary on Iraq only after Plame was outed.

"Yeah, lying about what he found in Niger was soooo risky. Got him on the cover of Vanity Fair, though, so I guess everything worked out for brave Joe. What a tool.

"Posted by jorsh"

What in hell are you talking about!? Wilson told the truth about what he found in Niger. And it was proven to be risky: for one, he was smeared to hell and back, and his wife's career was destroyed.

You've got yourself so twisted up with hate and distortion and attacks on Hillary that you can't even get the basic facts straight.

avatar

OK, now I get it; you're a professional *sshole --

"Joe Wilson is the worst thing that could have happened to the anti-war movement. That clown's lying and blatant self-aggrandizement was just the thing to discredit those opposed to the war. Funny how everyone who's been an embarrassment to the party ends up in the Clinton camp.

"Posted by jorsh"

In fact, *ss, it was Wilson who busted the lies that got us into Iraq, and that has resulted in We the people waking up. Well, most of us; you've got everything *ss backward.

IT was Bushit and Cheney who lied the country into illegally invading and occupying Iraq. It was Wilson who broke through their lying and exposed them for what they are to many who had believed those lies.

The liar isn't Joe Wilson; the liar is YOU.

Yeah, but your friend Hillary didn't wake up, did she? Seeing as how she heard what he had to say and still voted for the war. That's experience I can trust.

avatar

"Wilson apparently wound up working for Democrats due to "happenstance" ... so I suspect it's not happenstance that he seems so comfortable attacking a Democratic nominee as fiercely as he has.

"Posted by Chino Blanco"

But not so nasty as YOU.

Very mature.

An American hero and Clinton will put them both back to work.

Which is the only reason he's supporting her.

I would bet you a month's salary that these posters loved Wilson as much as they used to love Krugman. It's so weird that not supporting Obama has become their litmus test on a person's character.

You read the posts about Krugman - "he used to be so smart, but now I think he's getting senile" "He's lost his mind," and so on. I have to laugh because these folks actually put their inability to accept any information that does not fit their preset bias down on paper.

They're like Maoists!!

avatar

State and CIA are the aristocracy of Washington. So of course he supports Hillary.

And now Wilson is a consultant just like terror squirrel ninja Larry Johnson.

avatar

Oh dear.

avatar

As if we don't know who caibrates Barack's "moral" compass, Wright?

avatar

I made sure to rickroll Wilson and Plame that night I saw them in that Karaoke bar in midtown Manhattan. I may have been sloshed and looked like a complete asshole but boy was that totally worth it!

avatar

Thanks Chaney for posting this.

I tracked the Valerie Plame story from the very beginning, and was outraged by it. And I felt badly I missed Joe Wilson's talk here in Eugene/Springfield area Sunday night. Of course, the local paper is in the Obama camp but not to worry, word on the streets is that the race is much closer than some would like to believe. As it should be, given the economic & other woes of our Iraq-war disembowled state budget, and (since clearly you well understand the virtues of Clinton vs Obama), now I'm just preaching to the choir. Great post, & thanks!

I appreciate Joseph Wilson's exposure of the Bush Administration's lies on Iraq, but his account of Hillary's trip to Africa in March 1997 doesn't bear close scrutiny.

An earlier version of Wilson's statement quoted by Chaney was published on the Huffington post, where he wrote:

"As NSC director on Africa I experienced her direct positive involvement in U.S.-African relations; it was she, as First Lady who advanced through her own travel, then urged and made possible President Clinton's historic trip." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joe-wilson/obamas-shallow-credentia_b_92586.html

Again, Wilson wrote that "[d]uring my tenure as Senior Director for African Affairs in the Clinton Administration, I had the responsibility for helping to plan and execute President Clinton's historic trip to that continent.... Hillary had previously traveled to Africa, leading a prominent U.S. delegation to several countries." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joe-wilson/the-real-hillary-i-know-_b_77878.html

Wilson's first statement quoted above suggests that he had direct first hand knowledge of her 1997 visit to Africa ("I experienced") in his role as "NSC director in Africa," and indeed, Hillary stated at an appearance with Wilson that he Wilson had accompanied her on the March 1997 trip: "I'm delighted to be here with Ambassador Wilson. He and I did travel together to Africa and, sort of, paved the way for the president's trip the following year, which was historic."

In fact, Wilson didn't start as Senior Director for African Affairs at the NSC until later that year. If we are charitable toward Hillary, she seems to have confused Wilson with Susan Rice, Wilson's predecessor, who served as Senior Director of the NSC for African Affairs in March 1997 and accompanied Hillary on the trip. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/03/hillarys-foreig.html

The accounts of Hillary's visit to Africa that were published at the time suggested do not suggest that her role was largely symbolic, that she visited six countries, not 80, and that she did not spend her time discussing matters of state with political leaders (although she did meet with Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

Sorry, the above should have read, "The accounts of Hillary's visit to Africa ... suggest that her role was largely symbolic ..."

And in case I wasn't clear, the lists of "Hillary's Top Ten Lies" published back in March included her statement that she and Joe Wilson had toured Africa together in March, 1997. But Joe definitely did not go on the trip. Hillary was accompanied on her visit to Africa by Susan Rice, the "NSC director in Africa" at the time. Ms. Rice now works for the Obama campaign.
