TPM-aholics Election Fundraiser
Hi folks. Last week, many of you joined the TPM-aholics group at my.barackobama.com (mybo). We're now up to 83 members. For those of you who missed the thread, I set up the group to help TPM cafe members meet up offline and organize for the presumptive Democratic nominee.* If you haven't joined, you may do so here:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/group/TPM-aholicsSupportGroup
* If by some freak chance, Obama concedes and Clinton becomes the nominee, we'll re-orient.
In a second thread, articleman has proposed a TPM-centered fundraiser with Q & A from a campaign representative. Here's the idea: TPM members will hold house parties in cities across the country (or the world, I suppose, where time zone appropriate). Guests would be asked to donate to the Obama campaign. A conference call or web meeting will take place in which a representive from the campaign would answer questions.
Here's what we need to figure out to make this happen:
Who? If we were able to raise enough money, we could theoretically get the man himself online. I don't think that we should plan on that, but it's something to aim for. Other possible participants include Plouffe, Axelrod, or Michelle. Another person who could be interesting would be Facebook founder Chris Hughes, who coordinates online organizing for Obama.
What? In a future thread, or on the TPM-aholics listserv, we can have a discussion about what questions to ask. I was thinking that someone from each house party could take responsibility for asking one or two questions plus follow-up.
Where? Your house. TPM members will host house parties in as many cities as possible. We can bring in a lot more people if TPM members invite their friends and neighbors to participate. If you have no friends, and your neighbors are Republicans, you can publish the event at mybo. (I met a lot of great people that way at the results-watching party I organized last week.) If you live with a pet bear in an isolated cabin in the wilds of Idaho, you can still participate, but the more participants, the better, so I hope that people will host parties when possible.
When? Articleman suggested, and I agree, that we should wait until after the craziness has ebbed. We might even be able to bring in a few of Clinton supporters for some TPM unity. I suggest June 14th. Obviously, we're not going to be able to accommodate everyone, but if you would like to host a party and can't do the 14th, please speak up. If enough people can't do it, we can select a different day.
Why? To raise money for the Democratic nominee in the general election, to build connections within the TPM community, to satisfy our insatiable curiosities.
How? I suggest a skype call because it's free, doesn't depend on speaker phones, and allows us to see the representative on video. (Some setup required.) MrDeadeye2U, you wrote on articleman's thread that the campaign can do net-meeting style meetings. Is skype an option? If not, what would you recommend?
What else? I think the story of an online community like ours organizing for Obama could be press-worthy. That would good for Obama and good for TPM. If you have any press connections, please let us know
What now? Hosts. We need hosts. If wish to do it, please send me a message at mybo. My profile is http://my.barackobama.com/page/dashboard/public/gGnyqX. You can also find me by searching for Genghis at mybo or at the TPM-aholics group home page. In your message, please include how many guests that you think you can get and how much you think they would be willing to donate. This will give us a sense of how big this thing will be. We'll follow up with instructions on how to set up the party and also send you bumper stickers and buttons and such. Depending on the response, I may be pretty busy, so I apologize if I'm unable to respond personally. In addition to articleman, California Paige has offered to help coordinate, so you may hear from her.
Other stuff...
Please recommend so that this thread stays makes the recommended list. I apologize for taking up a spot on the list and promise not to inundate the threads with TPM-aholics organizational work. It's just a good place to get the word out and have a discussion. If you wish to be involved in the planning, please bookmark this thread and check back regularly, as we will continue to communicate here after it comes off the recommended list. The main fundraising page can be found at http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/maingroup/TPMaholics. I'll also set up an email list for party hosts so that we can exchange ideas and coordinate.
By the way, we still need to choose an official logo for TPM-aholics. Please vote in our logo-off.

Thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm and for making this possible,

So far, we have plans for house parties in NYC, SF, Tuscon, and (maybe) Pheonix. Anyone else want to volunteer for other locations?

I would suggest that you find some aspiring journalist at the old NYT or an cable person at MSNBC to follow your attempts. Good for Obama, raising money, and any shameless but deserved self-promotion. You've done a good thing.

Excellent, bademus. Plenty of recommendations on this thread, but the volunteers have not been exactly rolling in. Just to assure anyone on the fence, it's not a big deal to host. If you prefer to limit it to a few friends, that's fine.

Seattle has a bizillion Obamaniacs. Should be easy to get a group together. King County, I recall, was 72-27.

Indeed this is Obama country (big time) and I shouldn't have any problem getting enough people.

Weird. Every time I use a "less-than" sign, TPM deletes the whole line and everything after it. I meant to say, I can host, but my place is pretty small, so we'd probably be less than 15 people.

As Genghis mentioned above, you can keep it to whatever size works for you. And if it turns out there's more than 15 people who are interested in attending in the LA area, that probably means we can find another person to host.

I had all of 2 people from TPM show up at my results-watching party in NYC. I don't imagine that anyone will get a massive influx of TPMers at one of these parties. I would think mainly about inviting your own friends (however many you would like to host), having a good time, getting a chance to interact with someone from the campaign, and doing some small part to get Obama elected. And we can certainly do multiple parties in the same city.
Regarding the < sign. The software thinks it's the start of an html tag. If you want to use a < sign,
write < instead. > is >

Hi Scoff. I have some more Obama-supporting LA ppl I could connect you with if you join the mybo list and want to build a broader group for an event. If you're not there, please join and "friend" me and I'll work the connect. A

Thanks, articleman. I'm hoping someone with a bigger place in LA will volunteer, 'cause if I'm keeping it to 15 people, I think (hope) I know enough Obama supporters in real life to fill up my place. But happy to connect with your LA contacts -- thanks! I'll friend you on mybo and we'll take it from there ...

I'll look into setting something up in Singapore. I know of a few Obama supporters like myself, many of whom are already donors and might like the Q & A aspect of the idea. Unfortunately I run into many more of the multi-national-corporation "anti-capital gains tax" crowd in the ex-pat community here.
It's a great idea and certainly worth a try though!

A party in Singapore would be awesome. If we do it on a Sat. evening, then you could host yours on Sunday morning.

Breakfast with Obama (er, w/ the campaign)...that would work. I've already contacted two of the three supporters I know here and both were interested in the idea. I'll keep pushing on it.

So we've got the following cities tentatively holding events:
Where's D.C.? Chicago? Denver? Miami? Austin? Houston? Charlottesville? I've heard these cities referenced around the cafe, and I'm sure that there are plenty of others.
There can also be more than one party in the same city. Or, if you'd like to coordinate with someone who's already hosting, I can put you in touch with them.

i could host something in bklyn (i've got access to a loft space in DUMBO), if we have overflow at the NYC event or if there's enough brooklyn interest.

Friend me up at mybo, benjoya. I'm planning a party in NYC and would be happy to join forces. A dumbo loft party would be most excellent.

Breaking News on the ">TPM-aholics Logo-Off:
The early returns are showing a landslide for workerbee's latte/prius/birkenstock logo, which is a clear favorite among younger, educated, and higher income demographics. Older voters, alcoholics, and moonshiners exhibit a preference for elliotness's liquor label logo.
The lopsided vote masks significant indecision going into the polls. A whopping 93% of voters have professed a strong desire for a joint ticket. elliotness's logo has indicated an openness to such a ticket, but workerbee's logo feels that talk of a joint ticket is premature while the vote is still going on.
In addition, it appears that concerns that workerbee's logo would be hurt by the fact that workerbee is not actually an Obama supporter have not been borne out, as voters appear to have rejected such a litmus test.
If you haven't voted yet, the polls will remain open until midnight tonight EST:

I'm close enough to Manhattan that I'd prefer attending the NYC gathering versus creating my own. Especially since I have two cats and most of my friends appear to be allergic to them. And my living room needs painting.
If the date/time works for me, then I will RSVP when I next log in to mybo.com.
As for the logo, I started out liking Elliot's liquor bottle logo (for all the reasons you spell out, above) but workerbee's fresher, newer look appeals to me now, so -- sorry, Elliot, I hope you'll forgive me -- I voted for workerbee's logo. I applaud you for not backing out of the race, Elliot, even though we have a clear winner ;-)

Is it true that the key young alcoholic and high income older voter demographics split toward workerbee's design?
April 28, 2008 3:25 PM | Reply | Permalink
I reject and renounce this whole business. For one thing, Elliots logo was placed on the left of mine!
Everyone knows I'm far to the left of any Obama supporter here, as well as, any Clinton supporter. I'm a card carrying socialist!!!
There should have been a left corner and a far left corner!
(sniff)

People can also participate on the conference without having anyone at their place, if that's their preference.
We should see how many people from the mybo TPM list we can get to join the call. Not everyone's in a big city.
April 28, 2008 1:42 PM | Reply | Permalink
Definitely. And closer to the date, we can provide info for people to log into the call. The biggest value in organizing parties is to reach people outside TPM, increasing the impact that we can have and the chance to get someone higher up in the campaign on the line.

Genghis - I saw your message on the other diary thread about this and followed your link.
You know I'd love to do this, but I don't know that I can.
I won't be here by then, Genghis - I'll be in Taos. I have a pretty low profile in Taos and don't know a whole huge bunch of people so I don't know that I could actually put a party together.
Let me get to Taos and see.

That's cool. I asked you specifically in the other thread because I know you're a super motivated supporter. If it works out in Taos, great, but if not, no worries. If the event goes well, we'll likely do another one in the fall.
April 30, 2008 11:57 AM | Reply | Permalink
And, you can always participate from Taos, even if your "party" there is you-and-you-alone.
