TPM + Voting = Awesome
I'll admit I come from a reddit background and as such I expect a few things from any social news website:
1. I should be able to vote idiotic comments down
2. I should be able to vote reasoned arguements up
3. I should be able to have a mailbox that alerts me to comment responses
4. I should be able to edit my comment
5. I should be able to gain some sort of credibility as a user.
TPM kicks ass because of it's content, but it's usability is still circa 1998

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEW!! FOR IDIOTIC!!!

I concur. However, that stuff costs money. TPM's business is reporting (at this point). Give them some time to stockpile some money, and I'll bet that's what you'd see.
Of course, there are alot of idiots around here.
You have to give Idiotic some props, though. I see the "excellent news for hillary" everywhere. And, well, it's a pretty witty and acerbic commentator on campaign shills in general.

not really. TPM makes money on ads, and that means users. If users don't come here to post they will not make money. They need to make the content rich and the only way to do that is to make it easy and rewarding. Voting makes that happen.

Hi Diet -- We have some of these changes in the pipeline, and we hope to be rolling out a lot of new stuff soon. On the money issue though, it's not quite so simple. Yes, better features, better site etc. would probably mean more audience and revenue. But the chance of future increased revenues doesn't equate to having the money to invest at the present. In any case, we're working on it.

I've seen a number of geeks on this site offer their coding services pro bono. (I can call them "geeks" because I'm half geek, on my mother's side.)
Regarding Idiotic, we are in the midst of a star...

You wish you could be vaulted to his position.

Not sure what you mean there.

Just that you and I could both be as insightful as idiotic! Well assuming we both wanted to be comedic geniuses.

Meh. Comment voting and scoring can be neat but it can also create gameing and cliques.
Personally I would be happier if I could just consistently tell whether I was logged in or not or will have to re-log-in if I comment etc.
I am also persistently confused why the "recommended reader posts" are different on TPMMuckraker than TPMElectionCentral.
April 15, 2008 4:20 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well the difference is because some people feel their post speaks more to a muckracker post than election central. During the mega event this doesn't mean much as all posts basically do to election. If we didn't have elections going on politics would be split a little more between elections and scandals.

I agree with each of your points, but I think 1998 is a little generous. :) In fairness they seem to be making some progress, but there's certainly a ways to go.
Related to number three on your list, I'd like to see the "Your Profile" and "Your Blog" page merged into a single user homepage that gives comment response alerts and displays links to blogs and posts that conform to user inputted keywords.
I think you're on your own with number five, though. And yeah, back off idiotic! :)

Hehehehe. Well yeah, I'm still waiting for a perfect solution to #5

I've been logged in for well over twenty-four hours now. (Haven't had to sign in once.) I didn't change a thing. It's just happened. It's basically that "some progress" I mentioned earlier.
I also noticed that the posts on my "Your Profile" page have reverted back to the most recent entries, after of couple of days of displaying some of my first posts.
But the "More Entries" link at my "Your Blog" page still leads to a dead end.

Oh, and as other's have mentioned here and there, my posts have been popping up on the site immediately for the past day or two.

I've noticed that too. I hope it's an indication of more awesomeness to come.
