The Obama Drama

It didn’t take long for the media outcries of “foul” following last night’s debate. Keith Olbermann started spinning less than a minute after the debate ended. The outrage continues this morning with op-eds, cable talk show opinion, and radio hosts scrambling to defend their messiah. I like Barack Obama, but the media should be ashamed of themselves for their blatant partisanship following the debate on ABC.

If I didn’t know any better I would have thought Charles Gibson or George Stephanopoulos accused Barack Obama of being a child molester. The anger from all facets of the media regarding the questions asked of Barack Obama is embarrassing. Instead of focusing on the actual debate and the substantive answers from both candidates, the focus has been placed on ABC and the moderators.

My boy Keith looked like he was going to start ripping off his suit and pulling a Hulk Hogan last night. What was Keith’s main topic of conversation on MSNBC in his “post-debate coverage?” Keith was outraged that George Stephanopoulos would ask a question that was given to him by Sean Hannity and “another right-wing radio talk show host in New York.” Chris Matthews continued his sitcom analogy this morning when characterizing the race. Greg Mitchell described the debate as shameless. Josh Marshall called the debate…gasp, “an unmitigated travesty!” How pathetic all the way around.

The reaction this morning tells you all that you need to know about the bias towards Obama by the media. The media loves this guy. How dare anyone question him about Jeremiah Wright? How dare anyone question him about William Ayers? How dare anyone question him about his bitterness comment? How dare anyone question his patriotism? It is a good thing someone did because lord knows the media has given him a leather chair and a free ride on any controversial issues.

I think last night’s debate won Pennsylvania for Hillary Clinton hands down. The state has been more or less up for grabs as Hillary’s poll numbers continue to dwindle. Most of small-town Pennsylvania doesn’t watch cable news or may even get cable. Most of the smaller, blue collar towns get their news from the big three networks. This is the first time most of them have probably heard about Obama’s most controversial issues. I imagine those that gave him a pass on Jeremiah Wright are second-guessing themselves after hearing about William Ayers. These undecided voters likely made their minds up after hearing this news. These people are Hillary’s base of voters. Hillary won Pennsylvania by double digits after last night’s debate.

Was the debate the biggest piece of tabloid television that most critics have called it? I really don’t think so. I think that America has every right to get to know their candidates. Don’t get upset at the question, be upset at the answer. Obama looked terrible last night. Instead of addressing the questions, Obama deflected everything from the William Ayers question to the Jeremiah Wright question. I can’t stand a politician from either side of the fence that deflects a question. To me, that is gutless and a cheap way out.

So now what? This morning, Morning Joe took a poll among its viewers who thought Obama won the debate by over 70%. Now anyone with an objective eye will tell you that he lost the debate last night. The people that supported him before the debate will use this as a rallying cry just as the media are doing. People that are undecided probably wouldn’t be undecided if they were watching cable news regularly in the first place. Those are now Hillary’s voters.

Be careful what you wish for. You Obama supporters that are willing to look past all of the obvious holes in your candidate are going to be in for a rude awakening in November. If you thought those Swift Boat ads were bad, you haven’t seen anything yet. I don’t blame you for not knowing your candidate. Don’t worry. You will hear it all from John McCain’s friends in just a few months. All of it!

You're completely missing the point. You've got a ninety minute debate, and you're going to waste more than half of it with idiotic questions like those? We want to hear about torture, habeas corpus, the Iraq war, bin Laden, the economy, the environment, fuel shortages, unitary executive, signing statements, trade agreements. You know, important things. Get it?

No. You see Obama and Clinton are basically in lockstep on those and most other issues. Those subjects are for the Rep vs. Dem debates. Right now we're just trying to decide the Dem nominee and since their platforms are essentially the same all that is left is personal impressions, comfort level, presentation style and knowability.

And on those Clinton wins going away.

Yeah, with people who were strongly for her before the saw it.

So, let me get this straight: You're arguing that because we're going to be debating those things in the general election, we have no interest in hearing how well our prospective nominees debate them now. Is that about it? o_0

"Knowability?"

I tend to disagree, Ben. I get your point about appropriate questions, but what is actually germaine can be a matter of honest disagreement.

I think Eric's most telling point is the reaction of many "talking heads". I saw Mr. Olbermann myself late last night, and I was immediately struck by how PERSONAL he took the whole thing. His offended sensibility, and some of the insinuating comments he made, were those of an impassioned advocate - not one who (I would assume) thinks of himself as a journalist.

If he (and the many others in the media guilty of the same thing - a few for Sen. Clinton, but many more for Sen. Obama, in my opinion) want to RUN for something or CAMPAIGN for someone, get a placard and go at it, by all means! Until then, sticking a little closer to covering the news would be my best advice.

Well, I didn't watch any TV last night (other than the streaming video of the debate), so I'm definitely missing that particular point. Despite that he models himself after Murrow, I haven't thought of Olbermann as a journalist in a long time. I like the guy, but he's no journalist. As you say, he's an impassioned advocate.

Although I agree that what is germane is up for debate, did you find Wright/Tuzla/flag pin/bitter to be at all germane? I mean, I feel there are things we can all agree (or at least most of us can agree) are fairly petty.

By the way Hillary supporters, before you fall all over yourselves agreeing with this guy, take a look at his profile.

Did you not want to hear about the issues? I certainly did.

It's not worth arguing with these people about the mind-numbing inanity of last night's "debate." If they can't see it, they can't see it.

Anyone who thought the first fifty minutes of that so called debate were substantive is delusional. I turned it off after that,& from reviews i've heard ABC is being trashed royally .

Someone at Kos summed it up with this Billy Martin quote. " Everyone in the room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points & may God have mercy on your soul."

Please excuse, that would be Billy Madison.

I remember seeing a bunch of commercials for Dulcolax, Activia, Rolaids, and Ambien. Basically all the drugs you need to flush a bunch of crap out of your system and then render you unconscious so you can then forget the whole painful experience.

Sound to me like you are tuning into the wrong station.
After reading your post, I think you would be much more comfortable watching Fox News.
