The Jeremiah Wright Interview ...

Just ran on PBS an hour or so ago. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I thought he was wonderful, generous, thoughtful, and far-seeing. Even listening to a little larger portion of his speech one easily understands what he intended. He is my idea of a true pastor. I am Quaker born.

I just finished watching it myself and I thought it could not have been better presented, to show some background into Wright's biography, give a context for his church, and also an extensive explanation for how his sermons were used as ammunition to try to take out Obama. And I'm very grateful that the campaign did not work.

After watching the PBS interview I truly wonder how many people will change their opinion?

Or will they continue to harbor the hatred towards both Rev. Wright or Sen. Obama.

The was a guy on MSNBC the other day a black Republican who is an ordained minister who because of his political affiliation couldn't come out and support or defend the text of scripture used by Rev. Wright because he knew that it would exonerate Obama in some way.

I know which guy you're talking about and he ticks me off. I looked him up several weeks ago and it turns out his ties go back to the Poppy Bush administration, so you know what his agenda is.

The only place Wright could get a fair shake was with Moyers/PBS. Imagine if he'd been on any other "news" network? All you need do is remember Georgie Steph's outrageously inane "debate" questions to Obama, then watch his issues-oriented interview (adoration) of McCain.

Just finished watching it and I thought it was a very great interview. I think it's a shame that in the rush to paint Wright as a fanatic that no one thought of sitting down with him and letting him speak. Unfortunately I'm sure there will be those who still think he preaches hate. That's too bad. Very incredible man.

It was so well done.

How many other interviewers would have allowed Wright the time and space to describe the history and the religion of the dispossessed in America and to use a word like "hermeneutics?" (not a word one hears in everyday MSM. Can you imagine Scarborough or Dobbs or Hannity using it?).

Of course, Fox and CNN immediately launched into reviling Wright and grotesque misrepresentations of the interview.

Sorry to break up your lovefest but Obama's got problems. Some friends like Wright just keep giving. His 20 years of association gets him now accused of lying by his own pastor. Well deserved.

Can you quote the part when he accused him of lying. I like the facts to help me make up my mind, not interpretation. Thanks

Keep banging that drum, Matthew Weaver. Hang on to the hate. Don't go changing!

Thank you Rev.Wright! We were bamboozled by corporate media.

Great interview. It should serve as an object lesson on how easy a smear can be constructed, turn viral, and completely destroy a decent person's hard-earned reputation.

Mathew I wemt back to check your other posts and was pretty appalled at the denigration of the Black Value System. It is the epitome of taking responsibility for your life despite the disadvantages you face. I note you did not also copy how the System was developed. In '81. Ya think if they were being racist the white members of that church would have stuck around?

I went to check out the whole sermon when the flack first hit and was very impressed by it. I am an Atheist. I absolutely agree with Christ's basic tenets (best found in the Jefferson Bible), just not the divinity and all the other stuff that has been added over the millenia. I have probems with a lot of Christian ministers because they emphasize the negatives (going to hell) more than loving others. I found Wright very intelligent and moving. I could not see Moyer's Journal interview when it aired because I am at work (RN, night shift). Sounds like classic Moyers. I will watch it before I crash.

If you never read it, go find a copy of "Black Like Me". Written early in the Civil Rights movement by a guy who found a way to darken his skin enough to be taken as black, and then travel through the south. It may help you understand Wright and the rest of the AA community more than you have been able to.

Quote from a card my sister received that we all have kept in our bibles/journals.

"A bitter heart devours it's owner"

This group developed a way to channel the bitterness into very constructive actions that would bring them self respect and satisfaction even if they could not break through the glass ceilings.

Try walking in their shoes. You make me think of Obama's speech at the Ebenezer Church before MLKs Holiday. "We have an empathy deficit in this country"

Just finished reading the transcript.

Rev. Wright has so much of value to tell America. It's obvious why Obama was so strongly attracted to him. If only the rest of us would listen to him, we would be a much better country.

Here's to hope!

Ginny in Co says:

The far left does not understand the purpose and effect of the 'Black Values System' and Wright's ministry in general.

TUCC is an offshoot of the Black Nationalist movement of the 1960's, Black Liberation Theology being the religious aspect of that movement.

The Black Value System is designed to psychologically separate blacks from the rest of America. Ergo, the rampant conspiracy theories, the absurd charges of ''murder'' and "killing" and "concentration camps", and the ubiquitous references to "white supremacy".

Wright's congregation lives in an alternate universe where there has been NO progress in race relations, ever. The man constantly talks about slavery as if it still exists in the U.S.

"The Black Value System is designed to psychologically separate blacks from the rest of America."

Wow, I don't even know why I even attempt rational discourse with a bigot like you, but the Black Value System is all about blacks getting control over their own identities instead of letting others define it for them.

And slavery may have officially ended after the Civil War, but its vestiges have lived on for generations. Jim Crow laws existed up until just forty years ago, and we still have a form of quasi economic enslavement that results from the widespread economic stratification of our cities and suburbs.

Wright's and others' anger about this situation is entirely justified.

dugan49, Rev Wright spoke about miseducation and misinformation as part of the reasons for the attacks aganist him. He also preaches about self examination. He was speaking to you. It does not appear as if you have the correct information about Trinity UCC or its blac value system, or even slavery in the US. I could be misinformed.

avatar

I was very proud of Rev Dr wright, just as i am proud of Senator Obama. KUDOs to PBS, the interview was refreshing and a ray of light in the dark media noise,

avatar

I was thrilled when I heard Bill Moyers would be interviewing Rev Wright. There is simply no better journalist in the country to have done this interview. Moyers has a level of intellectual integrity, curiosity, and spiritual generosity that I find impressive and inspiring. He is not fearful of exploring controversial ideas and issues, and I think he did a great job in his interview with Rev Wright.

Also, I like the use of the word "humanizing" by one poster. That's been the problem with the Rev Wright "scandal" to date -- he has been completely, utterly dehumanized. In contrast to the rest of the press, Moyers did not fall into this same cowardly trap.

avatar

Rev. Wright did not need to be "humanized". He ALWAYS was and is human. It is not Rev. Wright's problem to make himself "look more human" to you or the MSM, but the MSM's problem (or yours) in how you characterized him.

Had viewers, listeners and readers been more discerning, they would not have been lead by the noses to assume that an outspoken black man was "not human" in the first place.

Otherwise, I am glad that those of you who took the time to watch the interview gained a much needed insight to the man and his church. Perhaps now you'll understand why Barack and Michelle Obama joined his church and thrived under his ministry.

avatar

Sadly, I just watched CNN. The egregious William Schneider opined on how Jeremiah Wright's speaking out is such a disaster for Obama. Actually, I don't think so, and that ridiculous speculation only feeds the frenzy of those who don't know any better. He's such a thoughtful person - when people have more exposure to who he is, they'll be much less likely to have a negative impression of Obama for attending his church.

avatar

Look, in an election campaign only perception is reality. And PBS' viewing numbers pale in comparison with cable. David Gergen, who is very sympathetic to the black church - understands it, summed it up well: Wright is being selfish. He's ensuring that those dreadful clips are reverberating all over again - not his interviews with Moyers.
This campaign isn't about thoughtful left wing understanding and appreciation of subtlety. It's about appealing to the greatest number of non-left wing Americans.
Anyone who doesn't understand that is in denial and nothing Wright or Moyers convey on the limited circulation PBS undoes the damage done on cable by having those coarse, crude clips playing over and over again when they had stopped.
What Wright's doing is unforgiveable if you're an Obama supporter. I'm beginning to think there's some truth in one commentator's appraisal that it's not in Wright's best interests to have Obama win: his and his church's liberation theology is vindicated by having African-Americans see themselves as being beaten down yet again by powerful whites, rather than uplifted by them.
Why the hell else would he be ensuring that all this is brought up yet again when it had died down? The only other legitimate reasons I can think of are simply personal ego/vanity or,less likely appalling political judgment.
All most Americans have seen are yet more clips of the Obamas with their little girls going into a church and then clips yet again of Wright being loudly coarse. For those of us who most care about seeing Obama get elected, what Wright is doing disastrous. It's the pits.

avatar

It did more good than harm.

For the small PBS audience, it’ll provide some comfort to Obama supporters who were wavering. The “God damn America” sermon, in full, conveys a message that’s 180 degrees from that of the clip.

Those who just see the video will come away a lot less hostile to Wright. The supposed Wright
attack on all that we hold dear will seem like just more political ya da ,ya da ,ya da.

The brief scene as a marine will help. But more to the point, Wright just doesn’t look looks as if he’s threatening anyone..

All those lively right wing talk guys had convinced Joe Lunchpail that his manhood required him to be furious because Wright was dissing him. You gotta stand up and fight.

But two minutes watching Wright takes care of that. He’s not a threat. Just an old guy who’s got these ideas. And, hey, some of them are right- that stuff about the Indians and those Japs who got send out to some sort of concentration camp. That really wasn’t right

The next round of exploitation of Wright will get dismissed with a shrug. “Yeah, yeah, give me a break, we know all about that Pastor Wright stuff.”

avatar

I figured when this happenned that Wright was probably okay, and that clips were misrepresentations. I'm not sure Moyers is the best place for him to have stepped out though. Nobody watches it. Oprah would have been better. Of course he doesn't have to be "humanized", but his p.r. needs a lot of work. Last night was a great start. By September, he should be leading a prayer at the Chicago Bears home opener.
