She Is Taking Him Apart!

Hillary is taking Obama apart today.

"I was raised with Midwestern values and an unshakable faith  in America and and its policies," she said. "Now, Americans who believe in the Second Amendment  believe it's a matter of constitutional right. Americans who believe in God believe it's a matter of personal faith.

"I grew up in a church-going family, a family that believed in the importance of living out and expressing our faith. The people of faith I know don't 'cling' to religion because they're bitter. People embrace faith not because they are materially poor, but because they are spiritually rich.

"Our faith is the faith of our parents and our grandparents. It is a fundamental expression of who we are and what we believe."

"People don't need a president who looks down on them," she said. "They need a president who stands up for them."

Elitism, his values, his attitude toward America, the culture of his church, his judgment are all suddenly back on the table.

Luckily, whichever of our candidates doesn't make the last mistake will just have to run against McCain.

I have a really hard time taking someone who rode the coattails of her husband's name and carpetbagged her way into her senate seat seriously when she calls someone "elitist" and "out of touch". Sorry, Hillary, but people *are* bitter.

But she learned to shoot at the family's lakeside cottage!

Give me a break.

Newsflash..Americans are bitter. 81% have had it with the stewardship of the Clintons, Bushes, and McCain/Liebermans...Enough of the war, enough of the war on the middle class, enough of the empty promises, triangulation and fear-mongering

Politicians like Clinton are like a baby's diaper
When it's full of shit, throw it away

That actually is a pretty good counter-counter-punch. I'm confident that Obama will have an even better (counter-)³punch.

Ben, I'm very disappointed in you.

A superscript? In the back-and-forth of the last few days, one thing comes through crystal-clear. Superscripts, and the fancy html codes that create them, are exactly the sort of elitist nonsense we as a party are going to have move beyond, if we want to connect to the honest, positive, optimistic (and definitely not bitter) lifestyles of church-going, gun-toting Americans. It's you people who use superscripts, and chug chai lattes, who keep losing us the goddam general election.

Billy, what bugs me about this stuff is that it's all such a pile of bullshit. I'm no more a fan of the 85 recommended posts about Obama's COUNTERPUNCH than I am of your post.

You've got a bunch of mostly educated, middle-to-upper class bloggers debating about which educated, middle-to-upper class candidates most authentically connects with working class people based on soundbites that have been prepared by their campaigns. It's nonsense from every direction.

That's why we're so lucky to be running against McCain!

I suspect there may be a kernel of truth to that. However, I'd say calling the candidates "middle-to-upper class" is perhaps underestimating their financial wealth just a tad. I'd say they're squarely in the "upper class" when it comes to wealth, although admittedly some more than others. (Either that, or I'm squarely in the "working class", or as someone unfortunately referred to them here, the "lower class".)

Yeah, I just made a post out of this, and changed it to "upper". I guess that I was thinking that Obama used to be middle class and perhaps the Clintons once upon a time. But not anymore. Here's the post:

Perfect summary. Thank you.

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

Lol! Just when I'd given up hope, our hero reappears!

As this story progresses, we will eventually see it settle squarely on the side of Obama's benefit, since he has once again chosen the path of truth and political courage and risk, and Clinton has once again chosen the path of hypocritical and cowardly demagoguery. There is nothing false in what Obama said. Obama believe voters can handle the truth; Ultimately they will reward him for it.

Hillary said it! It must be true! Because everything that Hillary says is always true! It has to be, because I love Hillary and she would never lie to me! We have this personal relationship that goes way back, you see! And my whole world is built around that truth that is Hillary! And she has an untarnished record of truthfulness! And I'm happy and optimisitic because Hillary said I am! And I have posters of Hillary and puppydogs and butterflies on my bedroom wall! And I'm so happy that Hillary thinks that I am happy! And that just goes to reconfirm my hope and love and trust in Hillary! Oh happy day! I'm going to go frolic in the fields and dance with the bunny rabbits now! Hillary still loves me!

I'm not sure Billy is talking about "truth" so much as "appearance". Personally, I think this was a decent volley back at Obama. As others have pointed out, Obama's use of the word "cling" was unfortunate. However, I think he'll send this back her way rather handily.

Hey Ben, I see you are sporting a new picture today too.

Matthew

Are you a gynecologist or did you just become a grandfather?

He's a new father, IIRC. (Also, I think the profession you were thinking of was obstetrician, although the two are often combined in OB-GYN.)

Yes. Much like Richardson, I think this world needs more beards.

Congratulations, Matthew Weaver. When your kids are ready, we're planning a big baby fight with Allsburg and Eliot Ness.

Yeah, it's me, and I'm in love again!

See, that's what I'm talkin' about! The happy optimism that Hillary knows is out there that Obama can't see!

Hillary Clinton accusing Obama of being elitist. Hillary, the voice of the people.

And McCain jumping on the same faux bandwagon.

And Fox covering it like it's worse than Watergate. The longer they stretch this out, the thinner and thinner it gets.

I don't know what voters will fall for this weekend. Maybe they'll buy it.

But as this plays out, has Hillary cast this elitist narrative that will ultimately boomerang and end up being a far more fitting narrative for her and Bill?

Is she digging herself into a larger hole?

I think the saying "when you point one finger at someone else, you're pointing three back at yourself" might play itself out pretty clearly here.

I think the Clintons will throw everything they have left in their arsenal at Obama in the next 10 days.

Meanwhile, the most damaging issue that has faced the Clintons lays out there without much coverage; Bill's million dollar commitment to Colombia Free Trade. To me, this is the height of hypocrisy. It's also the issue the Clintons are most fearful of.

If it's covered right, who do you think will appear elitist?

Hehehe... I enjoyed the exponent, Ben.

;-)

Thanks. I'm a big fan of the regular expression notation. :)

Yes, Hillary's words carry great weight coming from someone whose family sold us all down the river and damned us to eight years of Bush because Hubby wanted a blow job.

It's a generational issue. I blame it all on Mick Jagger who said: "When in doubt, go for the ..."

I don't know how this will play out in the long run. That's a pretty good play from Hillary, nicely worded. But the Clintons' greatest strength was that their opponents always overplayed their hand. Hillary's frustration could easily lead her to another "Shame on you..." moment.

Personally, I think Clinton will lose to McCain, so I hope this doesn't get traction. Obama, like Bill Clinton, benefits fron the fact that people like him. That, to me, is what political "teflon" is.

She is one hell of a great Republican.

Great post. It will be interesting to see if Clinton can run with this to the convention. It is not the first time Obama has used "ill chosen" words and likely won't be the last. This definitely defines his charactor in his own words and adds to the guilt-by-association he's already been grappling with.

Clinton's remarks today are excellent and may help make this a defining moment in the campaign. That she and McCain are on the same page is sweet because it further helps show how out-of-step Obama is and will help keep her and McCain's campaign on better, more substantive terms.

Matthew, I have to tell you that when you show up on my blog I think I know how Hillary must feel when the big dog gets off the porch. Please let me handle this.

But don't worry about it. This one is buried by the echo chamber now. We'll pick it up again later.

Another laugh that will help me sleep tonight.

Good one Billy Glad... :)

Suddenly that "typical white person" comment makes a lot more sense.

Recmnd.

"People don't need a president who looks down on them," she said. "They need a president who stands up for them."

No. I don't want my president to stand up for me or to sit for me or to lie down for me. I want my president to feed me pieces of chillies and cherries in dark chocolate whenever I'm down and bitter.

I just left that bitter thread that Genghis began. I'm now infected with his bitterness. I came in here thinking Billy would soothe me with some of his Glad only to find myself gawking and balking at the preposterous new avatar sported by Mathew Weaver. Why would a grown man wear a green bag on his head? Very disturbing. I know we are in the midst of a poo-flinging fest, but really.

sorry

Let me comfort you. You can call me Captain Howdy. We are not bitter inside here. We just burn.

Bravo Desidero... Scariest movie of all time. "The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!"

Two Faced Hillary is at it again.

Back in 1992 she looked down on people "who stay home and bake cookies, or stand by their man".

Looks like Hillary has now gone through a election death bed Family Values conversion.

Can you say political expediency and Tuzla Airport Windsock, Boys and Girls?

Now, Obama's comment finally confirmed how I have been feeling about Obamabots, his supporters with whom I never feel comfortable with. I myself a very liberal person but I'm not comfortabe, not convinced by him or his folks. Obamabots call theemselves all kind of good names with no shame such us liberals, more educated, more informed, more income, more intelligent, more intellectual. That's a way of subtly saying: if you are not one of us, you are NOT better off. They all have this unspoken attitude of "being better being higher than others" written on their forehead. They are just "full of themselves" and seems don't really see THOSE unlike them but also love their country. Supporting Obama is something so "in" and if the people are "not in", Obamabots consider those are worese and out of date. The real mind and thoughts of Obama were finally disclosed. It's not a bad thing for the public to see. No matter you are liberals or conservatives, as long as they have true compassion, they are good people. Putting down small-town America is not the way to win hearts and minds. We should be inclusive no matter what party we belong to.

I think you need a line break in there. Or maybe fewer words.

All I got out of it is: Be kind, love others, and vote for Hillary because its not the "in" thing to do.

Or maybe I glazed over after the use of the {candidate}bot terminology.

The problem is, Billy, that Hillary will have a hard time running from the elitist construct in the GE. The whole frame was devised by the republicans for the republicans.

Remember Kerry?

Remember $109 MILLION dollars of income?

the "elitist" game is a downward spiral.

I thought Hillary's was a solid response to his initial clumsy wording, but it doesn't hold up so well now that he's amplifying what he said. When CNN ran his Indiana remarks, then cut to her lines, she came off as cold and uptight, pitting slogans against his much more honest reflections. If she keeps hammering at this I think she'll come off as if she's just harping. We all know that she knows what he intended to say, and that it's nothing different (in substance) from what she says.

"I can't wait for someone to say that they were the son of mill worker." (just a little post for genghis)

I'm sitting here reading tpm and eating a nice venison steak. Road kill I picked up a month or so ago. Its hard to poach where I live now in Florida. I haven't been able to poach a deer since I left Bethlehem PA. My father worked at the Bethlehem Steel mill. Fortunately he retired with a nice pension at the first downsizing, several years before they closed down the plant.

I reach for my Rugar (22 cal automatic pistol) thinking about the uncountable squirrels I've killed and fried up. Not in a corn popper like Huck, I use a cast iron skillet. A person's home is their castle its said and even though I live in a 27 foot Winnebego RV, well, its a castle to me. So I do keep a gun loaded and near by at all times.

There was a time when I thought I liked to hunt. I thought I liked wild free high quality meat. I thought I held the second amendment to the constitution as sacrosanct as the first. I thought an armed populace was a necessary check on authoritarian government. I know, "It can't happen here." But now I'm beginning to wonder if it all comes back to the closing of the steel mills in my home town. It's not surprising I got bitter, I cling to guns as a way to explain my
frustrations.

I'm guessing I'm just a bit different than most of the posters here. I'm guessing many will find this post hard to relate to. Spin Obama's little gaffe anyway you want but there's a lot of people in my home town who grew up like me. This was more than a bad choice of words by Obama. Its not going to play well with folks like me. It does seem like obama just doesn't get it and it does seem condescending.

You can take the son of a mill worker out of the mill town but you can't take the mill town up bringing out of the man.

Ah well, it probably won't lose him the nomination but it surely will move some undecided people into the Hillary or McCain column.

And in case you're wondering, While this was somewhat tongue in cheek none of it is made up. Bon appetit

I think it would shock a a lot of people who live in urban areas how well a lot working class and lower middle class small town residents live on what would be considered a very modest income by their standards. A little sweat equity, a little skill with the hand tools and the ability to borrow and pay off a 100-150K mortgage puts you in a house and yard that millionaire New Yorkers could only dream of.

When I took my students to Atlanta for our subject area club's regional collegiate conference. It was weird to hear the the professional members, most of whom have relatively high incomes, talk about apartments and renting something here or leasing something there. I don't know anyone (students obviously excepted) who doesn't own their own home.

The Obama supplicants can say what they want, but claiming people own guns or go to church because they're bitter is a terrible mistake, one the repubs will seize on because it fits the frame of how they want to position him.

avatar

Wow, oceankat. That was amazing. I mean it. It reminds me of Jim Harrison.

She is being ridiculous for the umpteenth time, that's what she is. Hillary McCain, yuck.

Oh, yeah. When she shows up in the hills of central Pennsylvania, in hunters' orange and her favorite shotgun, to shoot whatever critter is in season now, she will have sealed Pennsylvania and the nomination!

Someone call Ted Nugent -- it would be one king hell of a photo op if he joined her on the hunt!

It is just like the Reagan thing, Obama says something completely correct, yet very intelligent, and then Hillary and her trolls jump on it, try to distort what he said, try to paint him as an elitist, where last time it was a Reagan-lover, in a desperate hope that it makes her somehow look better in comparison. It is pretty pathetic and transparent. I'm just waiting for Krugman to jump to the attack like he did with Reagan and everything else. I'm sure he won't disappoint his master.

Obama took himself apart.

He thought there were no reporters when he spoke in front of the elite large donors in SF and could speak like the real Obama.

Obama is to blame for losing.

avatar

"People don't need a president who looks down on them. They need a president who stands up for them."

So wait, I'm confused... which candidate is the one who called my state insignificant?

avatar

Quote: "He thought there were no reporters when he spoke in front of the elite large donors in SF ..."

And you know this... how?

BTW, did he also think there were no cell phones?

avatar

She later added, however, that she is not herself an expert with firearms: "As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage. I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting."

This is classic Clinton speak, and it is not getting very much attention focused on it.

Read it again. Hillary tries to con both the gun control and the NRA factions that she is on both their sides.

Hilllary Rambo Clinton, The Heroine of Tuzla, declares:

That She is not a hunter but she goes hunting.

Sounds like she does not duck snipers, but she has ducked snipers.

Big Foot Bill says that Hillary says those types of thing when she stays up until eleven at night because she is old and forgetful.

I think when you're worth >$100,000,000 you sort of forfeit the right to call much poorer folk "elitist." High net worth isn't the only thing that defines elitism, perhaps. But who's kidding anybody about knowing how poor people live?

Also, I don't think you can simultaneously claim to be an Arkansan, New Yorker and midwesterner. When the Puerto Rico primary comes up will she find a way to call herself Puerto Rican?

avatar

Paging George Orwell:

How do you like this prime example of Clinton Double Speak, Mr. Orwell?

She later added, however, that she is not herself an expert with firearms: "As I told you, my dad taught me how to shoot behind our cottage. I have gone hunting. I am not a hunter. But I have gone hunting."

Two thoughts.

If this has 20 recommends, could people please give a rest to the "nothing complementing Hillary ever gets recommended" cant.

Also, Matthew Weaver needs to put Allsburg down.

The fantasy-wish that she's taking him apart, as the embodiment of American values, is simply silly. It's so Hillary that she runs as values only in negative distinction to another. Her values in these areas were never offered up affirmatively as a major point of emphasis, only later as a critique of another, as she morphs into another essentially negatively drawn statement of herself. So tiresome.

I have a theory about that. I think 20 people have figured out that if you think your comment is worth reading, you should recommend the post so that it will stay around long enough for someone to read your comment.

Help me!! Help me!
