Obama 's Troubles Show His Strengths

avatar

Obama's troubles in reconciling his message of change and unity with a few divisive figures in his life such as Reverand Wright show his strength in speaking clearly in defining his values and his vision for America. That vision, the one many of us are so attracted to and articulated by Senator Obama throughout his campaign , has not changed. Senator Obama , however , has changed in that he has realized that even people he may care  for must be taken to task at times.  The true character of this uniquely talented man and politician has shined through the smoke of controversy.

While I may be in the minority, I prefer the Obama I know today to the one I knew when this process started. I  feal the opposite about the other Democratic contender.

In the end alot of this is and has been a product of different forces ( Senator Clinton and the Republicans)seeking to bring Obama down and a media which obsesses on controversy  as opposed to what most Americans really care about.  No Democrat can doubt that the Republicans have been singularly focused on bringing Obama down as they see him as a short term threat in 2008 and a long term threat from an electoral and financial standpoint. It certainly is not because they like Senator Clinton and think she will be better for the Country.

If Obama can get his meesage through notwithstanding the   controversy and various forces opposing him he will win the nomination and I believe be elected President. If he cannot he may lose in the short term ( as will the American people in my opinion) but will there is no doubt by correctly taking on Wright and Sharpton  directly he has secured himself as a force for the future. His short term success depends on whether his supporters gain strength through the hard times or cower in the face of difficulty. That is the  test of a leaders real support .

As Senator Obama has said from the outset, real change is difficult and will be fiercely resisted by the forces of status quo. While he may not have expected those forces to include  some he has been close with in the past, taking them on is just as important, albeit more difficult, than taking on the more natural foes.

Senator Obama should trust his insticts and judgment, speak the truth and see where it goes. As long as he continues to do that I will support him in good times and bad. I did not sign up for an easy ride, just a real one .

Great article. I am concerned that no one is legally challenging the reports of push-polling (in PA, no reports yet of NC or IN) and as appeared today, "Calls have gone out to an untold number of North Carolina voters telling them that they need to fill out a registration form before they vote. Democracy North Carolina, a government watchdog that has posted audio (wav) of the call, says that the calls went out to "black neighborhoods." Where are the lawyers on this?

BARRY MOONED YOU

What you get "shown" is only what you open your eyes to see.

(insert day dream of Obama innaguration here)

Since when, has the Democratic party made any sincere effort to combat this stuff? Ohio in 2004? Florida in 2000? They just bend over and ask for another kick.

When we have a chance to have a real leader, a cool hand, a real thinker, and someone who is becoming a statesman as the president, we have to stick with him. After a seven odd years of a president/administration who stumblef***s his/its way through everything, we have a real chance for recovery. We have to stick with it.

I didn't oppose Hillary when this whole thing started, but she's been like a rabid wolverine hanging on to something that she more and more seems to think she should have had by default. She's done things that have led me to believe she's just another power hungry pol who'll do anything to get it. I would admire her persistence if I thought it was based on something real that would do us all some good, or even if she'd kept it civil. She didn't and now I would have to practically be anesthitized to vote for her. Shoot, bourbon on election day IS an American tradition.

Wow, did you eat paint chips as a kid?

I don't understand this tactic of Hillary bloggers (assuming that this fool is one and not just a troll). What do they gain by a post that has no argument, just really stupid insults? Is there any path from this crap to getting someone to change their mind and vote for Hillary? After all, there's lot of potential voters here.

One line is all that something such as this is worth.

I guess you answered kindofblue's question as to whether you are a Hillary blogger or a troll.

:) thanks Cville, you haven't picked on me in weeks! nice to see you again.

You could have said, "Are you hacking Pam or what?" but you would have lost a whole world of cultural significance. The South as we knew it has gone away. Besides, not many of these people are from the South.

Louisville is a regular here. These are a few of its trademarks:

1) Making presumptions about what you think and what kind of person you are, then using that basis to thoughtlessly and blithely insult you;

2) Having no clue how blockheaded it sounds; and

3) Having no idea that "your" doesn't have the same meaning as "you're".

Take my advice: ignore it or taunt it. Just don't ever take it seriously. It'll just suck the life out of you.

;-)

Excellent post. It's only during times of strain and adversity that we experience the real character of a person.

Obama remains the best choice by far.

Obama has a disconnect from the African American community. He was not raised to play the Dozens. This is because he was raised by his white mother, and grandparents. He may have learned this in school by other African American kids, but I don't know how many black families he came in contact with in Hawaii. I am white married to an African American man. I am astounded when he plays the "Dozens" with his relatives. It is just not part of my upbringing. It is fun and very much part of his family and friend communication process. Obama may witness this from his wife and her friends and family, but I can tell you that this is not something you can just pick up as a white person, or a mixed race person not raised in the African American community. Reverend Wright is playing the Dozens with Obama, but Obama cannot really play the Dozens back. He should not be faulted for this, nor should the African American community fault him for this. People need to realize that Obama is unusual because of his mixed race heritage, and as such his real strength is his ability to see both races, and want to bring them together because of his unique vantage point. He is actually probably more like his white relatives than his Aftrican father, yet his is called an African American. He is of mixed heritage and is more like all of us than most especially white people realize. I do not know if bowling is big in Hawaii. He never should have been faulted for not knowing how to bowl. I wish the American people from different areas realized that Obama actually makes the most uniting leader in decades because of his mixed race heritage. He is more like everyone than unlike them. But to pick up the Dozens? That is an art that has to be acquired from childhood in my opinion. Too bad Reverend Wright did not take this into consideration before he set out to challenge Obama like he did.

What in the hell are you talking about? Are we all supposed to know what "the Dozens" means? Cute of you to use it over & over & over.

But I just have to ask, why do you as a white person feel you know that Barack (who is black by definition) is "disconnected" with blacks (which you're not).

By the way, most black people in our country have a white person or two in their lineage.

avatar

Just curious. Whats your definition of being "black" versus being "white"?

Ask Flavah Flav, he mastered the Dozens. And 9-1-1 don't come correk.

Obama's being vetted. He's withstanding the attacks. If he comes out even a little ahead, he'll have shown he'll easily beat McCain in the GE. The only question is whether the Supers will realize that.

Great post. Thank you.

I used to think that Genaeration X and Generation Y were very immature as opposed to the Babhy Boomers, but now my feelings have changed. Obama, a late Boomer, has managed to keep his cool and not resort to negative attacks unlike his opponent. Hillary Clinton has acted the sameway as GW Bush by throwing tantrums and feeling that somehow she is entitled to be president. Clinton like Bush has resorted to using low tactics in order to get elected such as using Bin Laden in campaign ads and they have both used over the top macho language in talking about Iran. The sad thing is that Boomer voters buy into this crap as was seen in Bush's election in 2004 and 2008 and Hillary's wins in Ohio, Penns., and Texas which were manly due to her support with voters over 50. While the Xers and Yers have not tended to buy into Hillary's negative attacks. Maybe there is hope those under 50 because it seems to me the Boomers have disgraced themselves with the likes of GW and Hillary. I know that there are Boomers that support Obama, but they appeared to be outnumbered in every national poll taken.

"Wow, did you eat paint chips as a kid?"

Actually, I did. Damned good they were, too. You should try them.

Now. A good latex gloss goes well with 101 proof bourbon.

Should go with a flat..more chance of some lead...though, of course, lead has been illegal for years. The only real solution is then go to a rundown building ....say in Chicago that might have been owned by Rezko. Might have a good chance of having some exposed paint from the 60's there that would have lead....But hey, anything goes well with bourbon.

Bourbon is better than Kool-aid.

The Dozens explained by wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dozens

Apparently, Rev. Wright even referred to this practice during or after his National Press Club speech. If that's what he was doing to Obama, he sure picked an odd place and audience.

Thomas, Excellent and you are right on. This campaign has
been like a marriage. You only really get to know what
your partner is like when the going gets tough.

We all know, nothing will grown with a little RAIN.

A tree will NOT become STRONG, unless the WINDS blow.

Obama, I admire him a lot more today, than I did 5 months
ago. I can not say the same about the other candidates.

peace-out from Oregon.

Thomas,
Great post.

I owe much to my friends; but, all things considered, it strikes me that I owe even more to my enemies. The real person springs life under a sting even better than under a caress.

To listen to you, you'd think that Hillary had something to do with creating this mess for Obama, Wright is just another controversial figure in Obama's life, and this whole flap isn't that big a deal. She didn't, he isn't, and it is.

"While I may be in the minority, I prefer the Obama I know today to the one I knew when this process started. I feel the opposite about the other Democratic contender."

While eating dinner tonight, as I was lamenting the whole ugly process of this campaign, my wife said almost the exact same thing.

I said, "I should post that on TPM," but you already have, Thomas. Thanks for saving me the trouble, and for saying it all so much better.

but will there is no doubt by correctly taking on Wright and Sharpton directly he has secured himself as a force for the future

Sharpton? When did Obama take Sharpton on? Sharpton hasn't done anything but say that it took a lot courage for Obama to come out and say what he did about Wright.
