Obama Abortion Stance - What?

avatar

He doesn't want his daughters to be strapped with what? Oh, a baby.

"Look, I got two daughters, 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."

There is your new compassionate Candidate that just wants to bring everyone together. What an answer. If there ever was a question whether he can answer the tough question this is it! Not only can't he bowl but obviously softballs seem to bind him up as well......

Can someone say.....Unelectable?

How is his answer in any way wrong?

Do you have kids Destor. Think about it a bit and let me know. He was given a softball question and simply whiffed on it. It the words he used in expressing his idea. Is anyone Punished for having a child? Think about those words. From the Candidate that says that words count.

I have girls as well but surely wouldn't approach the subject that an unplanned child would be a Punishment. Would you?

Lastly, I am just holding him to the standard that he set. If he is going to be the President that somehow brings us all together how does that accomplish it? You can bet your sweet ass that this has already made the rounds in the AntiAbortion crowd......

Unelectable

It is not punished for having a child. It is punished by having a child. And yes having a child while you are still a child is a punishing experience. It steals your childhood. Do you not know any teen-aged mothers? How much harder would your daughters life be if she has a child before she graduates from highschool? Look at the statistics for the children of teenaged mothers and see if you would like for your grand children to be punished by being born to early in their mothers life.

avatar

Ahhhhhhh A slippery slope. Regret going here now. Not a subject that I think anyone can discuss just writing. Deeper subject.

Unelectable

Who is more unelectable; the unelectable candidate, or the candidate who lost to the unelectable one?

I do have children, including a two-year-old girl (boys 10 and 6). This is the answer I would hope to give to someone asking what I would say or how I stand on this issue, to my kids (the synopsis). My answer to the kids would be longer, more substantive, and certainly nothing that could fit into an interview or news segment, but it would essentially cover those basics.

Where's the fire here?

avatar

What's the problem?

avatar

I don't understand where the issue is with his comment. Are you against abortion or sex education?

So what you're saying is that you favor teenage pregnancy.

If that's the best you can do to count coup on Obama I suggest you spare yourself further embarrassment.

Can some say....really, really stupid post?

avatar

No, of course not Chris. I hope my further explanations suffice. I am talking Politics here not policy. The Policy is clear but the Politics suck. That was my only point.

Actually one of my daughters has to run the Planned Parenthood "ring of fire" each day in Boston as she goes to class. To say that she dislikes those people and the closed ideas they represent is an understatement. Its how she was brought up.

Again, My apologies if my original thoughts weren't that clear.

What is your point here Chris? Could you provide context... say in the form of the original question?

Maybe mix into it some intelligible analysis?

I am pro-choice, not necessarily pro-abortion. Should my children get in a situation where they have created life, I might talk to them about keeping the baby... Not exactly the pro-choice line, but I would accept their choice either way.

avatar

I am not arguing the merits of Abortion. I agree with your statement. But thats a far cry than saying "Punished".....what was he thinking?

What precisely was the question? Do you have a link?

Is that the wrong answer? Where did he advocate for or against abortion? Giving information to his daughters is wrong? I have a 4 year old daughter and I too will make sure she's informed.

Hell, I'm 35 years old and both my kids (4 and 2) were unplanned. I wouldn't want her to get caught out by a mistake. I have many friends who had kids when they were 15, 16 even 19 years old, who had to put their lives on hold because the father decided he couldn't deal with being a parent at that moment. Yeah, I'll educated my children too. I'll make sure my daughter knows her choices, I'll make sure my son knows his choices. Apparently, in your world that's "compassion". I'm okay with it.

Maybe it would help us understand where you were coming from if you explained to us whether you thought this answer was too liberal (because it supports sex education and abortion), too conservative (because of the bit about values and morals), or just not quite as eloquent as Obama's usual self. We really don't get what you're driving at here.

Look I am not Anti Abortion. There wasn't anything deeper to what I said than what is there. His way of explaining it was eye-popping. Having been around enough Anti Abortion Catholics over the years they will simply go nuts with this.

If you add in that he was with Casey who is Anti Abortion. He should have done his homework and been totally ready for the question.

Its just a long pattern of not being totally prepared for whats coming his way. He's good when he has time and prepare. He's seems to have real issues with off the cuff discussions.

It was simply a hamhanded response that just adds fuel to the Far Rights fuel....

Hmmm, I see your point. What was he thinking by saying that he didn't want his daughters to have deal with lower educational achievement, povery, stress, and possible negative health consequences.

As an OB nurse, I have seen 16yo girls with crash sections and emergency hysterectomies. But your right, they deserve that.

If they have sex they deserve anything bad that might happen.

What a maroon.

Please don't get me wrong. I am patently NOT Anti-Abortion. Never have been. I've daughters as well and we have discussed this issue at length. I am only saying as a Political point, As a person that should know what will be done with those words that others should be used. Please do not try to paint me as an Anti-Abortionist. Hell I was an OOPS and two of mine were OOPS....

avatar

Sorry for not explaining it fully. I've gone hitless the last few days on posts so I thought this would be up and down as well. Hope my added comments suffice. As I said. I am not talking about pro/anti here. I am talking about the words and how they were used. Just worries me when the real heat starts.

I think it was clear from your post that it was the language you were complaining about. Your main beef is with him saying that having a child is punishment for the teen mother, and that is in your opinion bad politics. I disagree. Part of the apeal of Sen Obama is that he will tell the truth even if it is not politic. This is just one more example of it. It will continue to win him elections, as it has been, because the people are tiered of being lied to by those who will not say what they think for fear that it is impolitic.

avatar

I am glad you got it that way Larry. Don't need a lengthy discussion around Abortion. But we can agree to disagree. I don't actually think any child born on this earth is punishment. How we as a society choose for that person to have to deal with that reality.....is the real issue.

My apologies then Louisville1975 (never thought I'd say that;) misunderstood your reasoning.
