No, its a lie and she knows better!

This is very simple (though tragic)

I quote HRC:

"She got pregnant. She was having trouble. She went to the hospital. Hospital said well you don't have insurance? She said no I don't. Well, we can't see you until you have a $100. ...... She came back a week later. She was having trouble, same response we need a $100 dollars....etc"

This is not misspeak. This is an intentional embellishment of a tragic story for her own theatrical benefit. Why do I say this?

As the policy wonk we all respect she is, I am certain that she is familiar with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986. I will spare you the details but the gist is that no emergency room or hospital can deny you treatment based on insurance or ability to pay. They must provide at the very least a basic level of care to anyone who presents. The patient may be transferred to a public hospital after proper stabilization for further care due to continued costs or lack of advanced services.

As I am sure she understands, this is the reason the nation's emergency rooms are in severe overflow due to the numbers of uninsured patients.

In my humble opinion this story is worse than her escapades in Tuzla. I can appreciate the fact that she has no practical combat experience and would not know a corkscrew landing from a steep decline. I however refuse to believe that as the self proclaimed prophet of healthcare with 35 years of wonk she really believes this story. I also find it unconscionable that she would use this story to convey empathy in order to score political points. This gets us nowhere closer to solving the health/insurance problems in this country.

Hillary supporters will continue to rationalize these outright lies and half-truths. But, you have to ask yourselves if this is really who we want in the ultimate position of power. Bush has really demonstrated how much damage a President can do to us and the world.

She is right in saying that she is "vetted." The truth is patently clear that the Clintons are out for the Clintons, pure and simple. If you can accept this then by all means give them your vote. We'll talk again in eight years.

Too bad one can't downgrade posts.

Pithy snark.

I'm sure they get the internet where your avatar lives. Look it up and tell me why I should support her for this behavior.

A health advocate would have had this investigated post haste ... their "investigation" shows where they heart truly lies. (Pardon the pun.)

When a public official is informed of an egregious situation, he/she has responsibility to investigate adequately. Not to simply "vet" the story politically! Sheesh! No! When Hillary and her staff were told of this situation, they should have used their powers to fully investigate ... in order to address the alleged violation, thereby protecting patients from future harm. They were presented with an egregious systemic situation and should have brought to bear the full color of the law against it. How dare they even bring the story to the public without also, at the same time, showing that these things will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently for our protection.

A domestic *red phone* moment and she failed the test.

Like I said in a Previous post on this Topic She will LIE today,She will LIE Tmorrow and she will continue to LIE until HELL Frezzes over!!!Also the CLINTONS are only out for themselves and WOE to the person or PARTY that gets in HER way.

Linda in PA -- "A domestic 'red phone' moment and she failed the test" -- what a great summation! I would love to see it picked up by the MSM and repeated far and wide.

Vox, thanks for this post, especially pointing to the 1986 law on this. When I first heard the story, I thought it sounded fishy that a hospital would turn someone away like that. Now you've explained that it really was fishy.

I do think this is kind of important, not because she lied - I wouldn't call it lying when you just repeat a story you've heard - but because it goes to the heart of Hillary's supposed expertise. If a non-expert like me was suspicious of this story, why wasn't she?

McClatchy takes inventory of the fibs and finds most Americans do not believe her.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/32711.html

Good link. I think her argument of most electable is in serious jeopardy when the Gallup people are telling the world that you are the least trusted of all in both parties. This hospital story will either cement this perception further and/or make the percentage worst.

I have heard the argument that people did not like Nixon but voted for him anyway and as such they will still vote for Hillary.
I say dislike is not the same as distrust. Straight-faced perpetuation of untruths by her and her campaign staff equals unfit for office. (Let alone her divisive tactics)

If this is the dress rehearsal for her administration, I don't want to see this show!

well, at least one good thing about Clinton, her supporters don't come in their pants when they see her on youtube. It's extremely distasteful to observe the smug and smarmy attitude of Obama's folk, even more distasteful than the Rev Wright's dashiki. I assure you, when pretty boy screws up foreign policy and the economy, you won't be coming in your collective pants anymore, you'll be shitting bricks : )

Thank you for your off topic, gratuitously mean and vulgar post.

Comments like yours are exactly why we come to TPM.

Milla,

Did you think this was so brilliant you had to post it twice? Any particular reason you, as a Hillary supporter would refer to Mr. Obama as a "boy?"

Like to play that "race card," do ya? Like to talk dirty, too. You don't reflect well on your candidate, you know.

not well certainly, but a good reflection as in fitting and faithful ... they probly think it has real winning appeal!

almost anything can attract a few hopelessly lost followers ...

Milla and its alter ego, Milla J, post provocatively racist and sexist comments to get a rise. Ignore it.

So you like it dirty, eh?

I looked up your blog page. Are you really in Serbia?
I see you posted the same comments on all the other blogs. You must be a new species of troll. I get naming rights...

Dear heart, she was simply quoting a policeman who told her the story. That moment was captured on video, and was shown last night on ABC News. Her big "lie" was that she failed to properly check out his story before running with it. I really don't expect to see any Hillary supporters jumping ship over that.

Neither do I expect to see any Obama supporters jumping ship over that little matter of the questionnaire he said he never filled out and never even saw. Remember that one? Gun control, I believe. When his answer on the questionnaire became public, he said that it was filled out on his behalf by an aide, and he never even saw it. But now it turns out that Obama's handwriting is on the questionnaire. A photocopy of it was on ABC News last night as well. Oops. Which candidate is "lying" now? And who really cares? People who feel the need to jump all over these little gaffs only highlight just how little difference there is between these two candidates.

By the way, today's Gallup poll shows Obama and Clinton still in a statistical dead heat.

Whatever. In the primaries she is still losing. Try to deal with that reality. I know she isn't, but it could start with her supporters and grow into a movement; a truth movement.

Yes, to the uninitiated observer it would appear that all this was a failure to check facts. (Not too difficult. Call deputy and get hospital name. Call hospital and tell them Hillary heard this story. Hospital administration goes into chinese fire drill mode to get the facts. They call Hillary. She gets the story with no names of course HIPAA violation and manipulates story to her benefit. Total Elapsed Time 2 hrs tops.)

I would counter that she has decidedly promoted her "experience" as the keystone of her electability. This experience involves an extensive understanding of all the major issues but in particular she has claimed an intimate knowledge of healthcare by virtue of her battles and "scars" in 1993 with congress (they use to insisting on checking proposal details back then, you know - oversight). Suffice it to say that she knows this stuff like the inside of her campaign war room.

This story was repeated on multiple occasions knowing clearly that if true it would be a federal felony by the hospital. The deputy may not have known better but she did.

You are probably correct. Its not just a lie. The more accurate term is

Subterfuge:

-suggests the adoption of a stratagem or the telling of a lie in order to gain an end

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Sunday, April 06, 2008

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows Barack Obama holding an eight-point lead in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. Obama now attracts 50% of the vote while Clinton earns 42%.

But, but, but...Otto (and Hillary) say it's neck & neck. Oh, gee, who do I believe? Otto and Hillary, or my lying eyes?

Let's suppose the situation outlined by Clinton was actually true, that this was a minimum-wage worker with no health insurance. This woman must have recognized her situation was serious - she didn't go to a doctor's office, she went to a hospital - but was unable to get medical help for herself and her unborn child because she could not scrape together $100. In a critical situation, she had no source of money available to her.

So ... where would she get the money to pay for mandatory health insurance? I don't know what kind of tax credits Clinton thinks would be available to lessen the financial burden when even the current Medicare system charges the indigent elderly (those whose Social Security payments are only a couple hundred dollars per month, but too high to qualify for Medicare ) more than $50 a month for coverage.

Establishing one's empathy credentials by creating a falsehood doesn't just hurt Clinton, it hurts the fight for a better healthcare system.

"Establishing one's empathy credentials by creating a falsehood doesn't just hurt Clinton, it hurts the fight for a better healthcare system."

Exactly, thanks!

vox, you make a fair point, but I still don't think that this is a serious enough story to merit the top recommended posts. It may be an intentional embellishment, but at least in this case, she's not embellishing her own record or misrepresenting Obama's. It seems like every election has a candidate getting called out on one of these sensational stories that aren't true.

She should obviously not have told the story, but whatever. I think that the attention it has received at TPM cafe is due to Obama supporters delighting in a case of "gotcha". I don't like it when Clinton people do it to Obama or when Obama people do it to Clinton.

Ghengis your point is taken and appreciated. I am a little surprised it has gotten this much attention. I guess it just points to a continued pattern in her campaign. Additive effect or something.

Aww...you're just jealous that Dance Dance Nomination I.0, I.1, II, and III didn't sweep the 'Mendys!

But maybe you can take heart in an old saying from my academic advisor from way back when. His dad was a History prof. at Columbia and used to compare college administrators to a cream separator: "The fat always rises to the top!"

(If you don't know what a cream separator is, ask Grandpa Simpson)

Liar liar pantsuit on fire!

I love how consistently piss-poor Hillary haters are at investigative reporting or even basic critical thinking. Because you don't have any details of the circumstances of Trina Bechtel's death, you are going to end up being wrong. When that happens (and it undoubtedly will), will you admit your own mistakes and post a retraction/ correction diary? Of course you won't! 'Cause the biggest bashers are always the real-life weenies.

So how the hell do I know what the future holds? I don't. But I have written and edited enough nonfiction articles of my own to understand just how many details remain unreported in this story. Enough to get burned by.

So here we go with the lastest from The Athens Messenger:

O'Bleness may have been hasty in accusing Clinton of telling a false story....
...[Bryan] Holman claimed the hospital he was referring to when he spoke to Clinton wasn't O'Bleness, nor an affiliate.
Holman said when he spoke to Clinton, he never mentioned the name of the hospital that allegedly denied the woman care, nor did he mention the woman by name.
Holman, a friend of an uncle of the woman, said his understanding from talking to the family is that she initially went to a hospital other than O'Bleness, where she was asked to pay $100, possibly because she owed money.
"The family thinks that whatever hospital she (initially) went to, she had a bill and couldn't go there," Holman said. He said he believes the woman went to O'Bleness after she was turned away from that other hospital.
Holman said that other hospital could have been "anywhere in Ohio and West Virginia."

WaPo is starting to slowly backpedal too:

But it is unclear whether the hospital in question in Clinton's story is, in fact, O'Bleness.

Hope this diary gets lots of recs.

Look, before you blow a gasket, this is not about hate. At the end of this the last thing anybody wants is a democratic party civil war that allows McCain to win.

This commentary is based on the details she provided in her repeated speeches. Details which at least you bothered to begin investigating. I thank you for bringing these comments from the Athens Messenger to my attention.

It still does not appear to me the campaign sought this information before putting it in her stump speech. Words in speeches matter and more importantly as you say details matter.

I'm a little gun-shy about trusting her comments. Especially when they make the ultimate difference....

"I voted for an authorization for further diplomacy"
"If I knew then what I know now."
etc, etc, etc....

Perhaps Mark Penn should do another poll of all possible hospitals and what the woman may have been told at each one!

Hillary should be able to trust his best efforts; right?

And with possible federal felony charges being involved we can rely on every hospital admin officer to provide the most reliable story for the record! They are always eager to make their mistakes public so as to instill confidence and trust in everyone desperate enough to seek help in their emergency rooms.
