He's mentioning a lot of things, you notice?
I wonder how many people will comment on his message of unity....

Hey, I clicked on the streaming video, but I'm just getting a lot of interesting, mildly humorous commentary on language and social status.
Where's the controversial, fire-breathing train wreck I was promised?

Geraldo is being a total tool
Trying to reduce the speech to an "education" approach: for him "different is not deficient" means black kids are excused from passing SATs
And then he uses his extensive insight (??) on education theory to try to debunk that, saying this guy is wreaking havoc on the education system.
First of all, even if it was true, what teacher or education expert is going to listen to a preacher's opinion and act on it, even tho he quoted experts in the field in the 60s?
And second, what the hell does Geraldo know about education?
CNN is being incredibly reactive as well.
April 27, 2008 8:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
Lol. I'll take Geraldo's opinion on education seriously when he finds something interesting in Al Capone's secret vault.
April 27, 2008 8:49 PM | Reply | Permalink
Anyone have a link for video Geraldo's response? Did he actually say that Wright was excusing Black students from passing the SATs or was that a snarky summary? No one passes the SATs. But that is the least of my critiques if that is how Geraldo summarized him.
As someone in education, I thought everything Wright said was spot on. The research he cited (and other similar research), though old, remains the basis for much scholarship today. And, the approach of our schools hasn't changed much either. We still value European ways of learning and view others as deficient.

CNN showed the entire intro and all of Jeremiah Wright. I wonder if people will take soundbites of this and place them in republican ads. Bastards.
April 27, 2008 8:40 PM | Reply | Permalink
Of course they will. The tone will scare the shit out of some segments. "Difference does not mean deficient". Um, what a concept.

Yeah, the cable channels were waiting, hyena like, to pounce on Dr. Wright's political carcass. They thought!
Rick Sanchez, on CNN, is still circling to see if there is some opening he can attack. Does anyone besides the hyenas believe this Detroit NAACP speech rises to the level of non-stop national news coverage?
April 27, 2008 8:42 PM | Reply | Permalink
They better switch the conversation soon because he actually had a pretty good message to deliver.

Too deep for average consumption. Welcome to a different world. It's all about tolerance and acceptance of the fact that no one group can take possession of America. It belongs to us all. Rick Sanchez is taking a positive view so far.

Even though it's not posted on the C-Span schedule, they often replay events such as this, especially in light of the fact that Rev Wright will speak to the National Press Club tomorrow, which C-Span will broadcast live.

Reverend Wright is an impressive man. His insights are amazing and his ability to share them is almost without peer. Hopefully all of this appearance will help put some of the drama behind us and allow us to get back to the matters that are most important in this election.

The Media now has a choice to make! Back peddle for all the ridicule they have given Rev Wright and his Church or try and continue their fight which THEY will lose and they know it!
They have taken on something larger than they ever expected!

Reverend Wright is an asset to Senator Obama.
Definitely NOT a liability.
The media have egg on their collective corporate faces for the dangerous hate inciting hatchet job they did in (mis)portraying him at best as a caricature, and at worst as an America hating dangerous Black separatist.
I think it's a matter of time before they issue a formal apology to Reverend Wright, the church, AND to Senator Obama.
I know. It's naive wishful thinking, but they owe him one huge apology at the very least.

If I were David Axelrod and David Plouffe, I'd get with Barack and figure out a way to bring Jeremiah back into the fold. Fortunately since Barack did not "disown" him... he can bring him home again.
I'd put it right in the media's and Hillary's, Bill's and McSame's faces.

I totally agree the Media is in a very uncomfortable situation. The tables are about to turn in the other direction! Change is coming!

Well, y'all, I think we're pretty much "the faithful" on this thread, and I'm not surprised that Rev. Wright goes down well with us.
I do think it will help for the American people to realize that he's actually a smart, funny guy with a balanced perspective.
But I don't know about him being an "asset" in the general election . . . it's easy to overestimate the American electorate . . . so let's not reschedule all the Wright-Obama photo ops *just* yet, okay?
April 27, 2008 9:22 PM | Reply | Permalink
no, i think it's time to hit this head on... either people will see that they were "hoodwinked and bamboozled" by the media, or they won't get it. And if they don't it's their loss.
Mark my words... Pat Buchanan, Joe Scarborough and the rest of the cackling crows will keep this going, but having seen the "man behind the curtain" in a good way... here and on Bill Moyers... i think a lot of people will change their minds...

Monday will be interesting. Can't wait to watch the MSM grapple with this. I bet they will trivialize his message and use his various voices as mocking. They are in the edit rooms right now reducing it to 30 seconds.

What this also does is to reaffirm Barack's judgment. His political opponents were using the Rev. Wright flap to question Obama's key claim for why he was the best choice for President.

He's being called racist, arrogant and all kinds of negative things. Just as I suspected, many didn't listen and some who did heard something I did not. I heard him say it was bigger than the 3 candidates, but the critics didn't hear that so they project their own hatred to the feet of Barack. Expect an onslaught from the short bus.

You know, Rev. Wright being on the front pages again is actually a good thing for the country. We keep trying to hide race and racism under the rug. We don't want to talk about it. We treat those "different" as deficient, and act like that's the norm. We act like things can but compartmentalized. The assumption is "if black people would just be more 'white,'" everything would be just fine. If Barack Obama would just be more like Hillary and Bill and John McCain, everything would be okay. If he could be less black, that would be better.
Rev. Wright is too brilliant for these people.

Can you believe the spin from the Hill supporters like Debbie Schultz the FL should count advocate.
It's not a problem but they want it to be a problem. So the Republican attack ads still have legs - they ads would be ineffective if their definition of wright is changed.
Why are they behaving like the man was calling on God to damn, America - he wasn't.
He was speaking from a biblical perspective that says if you do wrong and sing God bless America, God is not going to listen after he becomes weary of the rebellion to His word and "it's in the bible" that God will send damnation for the unrepentant who continue to sin. He is a preacher and most [all colors] do preach this message of damnation for the unrepentant, it's a bedrock of the Christian teaching.
Where are the Christians on this, why aren't they speaking, it's the same message delivered differently?
April 27, 2008 10:56 PM | Reply | Permalink
Do you mean where are the people who really do think different means deficient. They'll be out in droves Monday. Unfortunately, the so called Christians will lead the charge against the "black church" because it is not Eurocentric. Basically, he took us to school and know how much Americans hate school.

I don't think Dick Durbin helped much because he was unprepared -- not watching the speech was a major mistake. And I think he went a bit too far in characterizing Barack's position about Wright as said in Philly. Clearly what Wright was talking about tonight didn't fit Durbin's old talking points.
But the republican and hillary sides were predictable.

The mighty Reverend KICKED ASS! The truth shall set us free, for those who want to hear it. Nothing scaaaaaary in his words.
I was doing a Hallelujah stir on the treadmill.
I thought Rick Sanchez and CNN gave it pretty fair coverage for a change.
Let's see what tomorrow brings. Wonder how the Clinton's will turn his words into a racial burn against Barack? Who gives a damn about McSame and his clueless lemmings.

One more thing... remember also that on one of the eight or nine daises (sp?) sat Sen. Carl Levin, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Sen. Debbie Stabenow and several other Michigan pols who SUPPORT Hillary. Now surely if Rev. Wright was so toxic, Hillary would have told her supporters to stay away lest they be poisoned by his "divisive" "hate-speech-filled" "diatribes".
From Hillary's mouth: "You can't choose your family, but you can choose your pastor. I wouldn't have sat there for 20 years." But her supporters were there tonight en masse and KNEW ahead of time who the keynote speaker would be.
Hmmmmmmmmm.......
