McCain's VP

It seems Sen. McCain told Don Imus that he's narrowing down a list of potential running mates and right now, he's considering about twenty people.

Over the weekend, some folks tossed Condaleeza Rice's name around the media as someone who was campaigning for the position, but it appears that Mr. McCain doesn't have any interest.

The evangelicals keep coming back to Mike Huckabee and he would help McCain with that bloc, but naming him to the number two spot would certainly be political suicide in the general election and I've never actually heard anything from McCain that would make me think he'd be a choice.

Mitt Romney's name is being pushed by folks like Rove and Hannity, he is well liked among the economic wing of the party and he'd really help with money, but there's a group of twenty, prominent social conservatives who are running an open letter ad saying that if McCain picks him, their constituency will either stay home or only vote down-ticket.

There are other names being floated; Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota and former Rep. and past Director of Bush II's OMB, an Ohioian named Rob Portman, but both of these are lesser lights and it seems Sen. McCain's choices could be becoming limited.

Personally, I'm not sure which way McCain would go. There could be an argument that he'll have to shore-up his conservative credentials and as a Democrat, I have to say that this wouldn't worry me. But, if you take into consideration the points raised by my recent post about McCain's race to the middle, then you can't really discount that he may make a choice from the Republican's more moderate ranks.

This could be particularly problematic for the Democrats in the fall because one of the first names which comes to my mind is Colin Powell, who would instantly give the Republicans a boost in the polls and would instll a sense of gravitas to the ticket. And, if he wanted to go unorthodox, I'd have to worry about the possibility of Sen. Olympia Snowe because she'd certainly move Maine to the McCain column, plus she'd help throughout New England, with women and independent voters. Christie Todd Whitman would be another name that might give me pause because she'd help in the Mid Atlantic, she has some economic conservative credentials, plus she quit the Bush Administration over an environmental issue, making her something of a "maverick", who's also known as a fighter.

If you're a Republican, who do you like and if you're a Democrat (like myself), who frightens you?

McCain/Lieberman? You saw them in Iraq together . . .

Ew. Never thought of Lieberman. I don't think Colin Powell would agree to do it, although that would be the choice that I wouldn't want to go up against as a Democrat. I don't think he agrees with McCain on Iraq, and I don't think he wants to get caught up in the run-up to another war, plus I think he decided years ago he didn't want to put his family under the microscope.

I'm still thinking it's going to be Romney. I know there's a couple randoms, but McCain really has to do something to combat the fact that he knows nothing about the economy, and people tend to think Romney does...

And I don't think there's any way in hell he'll choose Rice - she's much to close to Bush and the mess in Iraq. If he's going to distance himself from Bush he can't choose someone high up in his administration.

If it's not Romney, it's going to have to be someone else viewed as a "moderate." It's the only way he has a chance at winning in November if he keeps his middle-of-the-road image. I honestly don't know enough other names within the Republican party to say who that might be....

The reasons that I think Powell might consider it is because it'd allow him to "fix" the Iraq situation and because, though he's gone a long ways toward rehabilitating his image with leaks about "pottery barn" and such, a Vice Presidential bid could help him get all the way back. Of course, his shortcomings are similar to Edwards' in '04, in that he's not attack dog, so in addition to being reluctant to take the risk, he might not have the stomach.

Still, I think that Powell would be a hard one for the Dems to beat.

As for the others, I have to say that the two women would cause me concern. Olympia Snowe is respected across the board and she's known as a moderate or a "Republican-in-name-only". Sure, Maine only has three electoral votes, but I don't know that Pawlenty or Portman could bring along their own states, plus they're both "white guys" from the midwest. And, Christie Todd is a fighter, who could probably even go toe-to-toe with Hillary, if need be.

McCain/Clinton frightens me...

It would be a bold step for him and the culmination of a long winter for her.

I hate to be the one to say this, but how can he choose Romney after the Warren Jeffs incident that's been in the news recently. I'm not saying that its fair to associate Romney with any of that stuff, but the truth is that people will. If he had been the nominee it would most likely have destroyed him.

A lot of people think it'll be Romney and those photos of the two of them campaigning together really set the stage, but for reasons similar to the one you cited, I don't think he'd help in the South and because the social conservatives are already making threats, he might even cost McCain votes in that crucial region.

Another name that I've seen mentioned is Rudy Giuliani, but I think he suffers from some of the same minuses as Romney.

Of course as a Dem, I'd take either of thees guys, but I also want to yell; "Go, Huck, go!". He'd be like manna drom heaven, as far as I'm concerned.
