Local Church Asks Whether Obama Is Osama's Brother Because Their Names Rhyme
A church in my neck of the woods in South Carolina has a sign up asking if Barack Obama is Osama Bin Laden's brother.
Here's a picture of the sign.
Church Sign Causes Controversy Sunday, Apr 20, 2008 - 10:31 PM Updated: 10:59 AM
By Elizabeth OwensE-mail | Biography
A sign is causing heated arguments outside of a church in Jonesville.
Pastor Roger Byrd of Jonesville Church of God put the sign up which reads "Obama Osama humm are they brothers?"
Pastor Byrd says the sign is not meant to be racial or political but
rather to make people think. "His name is so close to Osama I have a
feeling he might be Islamic therefore he doesn't recognize Christ,"
Pastor Byrd said.
Barack attends Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
Eugunia Foster is offended by the church sign. "I'm embarrassed and
hurt. I'm surprised a small town like Jonesville still has this
separation. It is racial and hatred," Foster said.
Pastor Byrd told News Channel 7 he would ask his congregation to
vote on whether to keep the sign. They voted unanimously to keep the
sign up Sunday night.
Jonesville Church of God does not have any African American members.

Obviously it has not been very successful in its intended role.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday. "To make people think."
To make people think what? That he's an idiot? In the words of our esteemed CiC, "Mission accomplished."

With the audacity to dream, he could be anything, we just don't know, and that is the problem.
"Barack attends Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago."
The only significance there is bad news, Wright?
"It is racial and hatred," Foster said."
How so, pray tell?
Maybe not brothers, but BHO has claimed relatives the world over. What was the chance that he is related to Geo Bush. That's enough to lose my vote

Cue the banjo music from "Deliverance"
Ignorance, hatred, racism and bigotry. I have to remind myself that you can't apply reason to insanity.
The "pastor" of a local "church" a few towns over from where I live just got picked up by the "To Catch a Predator" people for soliciting what he thought was a 13 year old. Mr. Byrd seems to be using the title of "pastor" to push his own perversions on the local populace.

Does anyone else wonder how this Pastor Byrd came to head up a church--even a small one?
Or if he manages to dress himself, tie his own shoes, wipe his own ass??
It scares me when I hear about people this butt-stupid.

This is the problem with fundamentalist, right-wing evangelicals.
All they need is a sign, a double-wide, and bigot with a bible who calls himself "pastor", and they've got a tax-shelter and state protection to start preaching hate and ignorance.
This is the mindset that permeates the Bush/Cheney/Rove administration. Remember Monica Goodling? And all the others that got their degrees from that bogus religious "university"?

Wow. I had no idea it was so easy to become a pastor of one of those churches. I've spent my life in mainline protestant churches peopled with educated clergy.
Yeah, I remember Monica Goodling and that ridiculous 'university'--"Liberty University," I think they call it. Do you mean to tell me that their theology teachings are questionable too??

His congregation voted unanimously to keep the sign?
Makes me think ... that Jonesville needs more elitists.

Indeed. That's the scariest part. A single, ignorant pastor? Annoying, but not surprising. A church whose entire congregation is that ignorant? Well, possibly not that surprising, but we've moved beyond simply annoying and into scary.

They need someone with half a brain to get in his face and tell him to take that stupid shit down. The entire country will look at them like the idiots that they are.
Not enough people around who can think and speak at the same time in this country.
If he got pressure he would take it down, be damned a vote.
Anyone have a phone number to post?

I think I know where this Pastor and congregation gets their information from....FOX NEWS the distorted truth and bigot network..if anyone out there has been watching they are doing the same thing as this Pastor...Everyone knows that the only ones we have to fear are Evangelical Christians this Cult is dangerous and outright Racist, they have gained to much power and must be destroyed and I mean as in eliminated. They have infiltrated our military and not to mention the White House. Look at their leader BUSH. Think about it, they cannot be to smart. We need CHANGE and not more of the SameMcaine or Hillary. Isn't it about time that we put someone else in the White House instead of the same 2 families who have run this country for 20years.....Bush, Sr Bill Cliton-Bush W total of 20YEARS 2 Families and look at where we are now....so if you can cast a vote think about your future and your families future and vote for something totally NEW don't be afraid I doubt it woud be wrose then what we have now...Lucifr

So someone's last name is similar to another person's first name and you ask if they are related? Wow that's not just racist and ignorant; but just plain STUPID!
With that type of logic: My first name is John and my last name begins with an "H" so I guess it is pretty likely that I am a direct decedent of John Hancock!

My college roommate and I wrote a letter to Late Night with David Letterman once to comment that we'd noticed that Dave had a dog named Bob. We told them we had a cat named Bob. We wondered if they might be related.
But we were just making a stupid joke.

Reading the headline, I thought this was snark and was ready to comment that I had already snarked the name thing yesterday. I guess that sometimes reality is stranger (or sadder) than snark.

Please stop creating threads that provide a wider platform for such obscure local yokels. It is not going to alter that christo fascist preacher's outlook, but by amplifying his hate speech, you are probably doing more harm than good.

If anyone lives nearby, I'd love to see that sign get changed to "Byrd Turd humm are they brothers?"
Yes, I know it's adolescent.

Their sign isn't even about religious issues for of the three, Obama is the most comfortable discussing his Christian religious beliefs. Its really about the right-wing POLITICAL agenda of the pastor and his congregation.

Here's the email address of the head of the Church of God in South Carolina (there are emails on the website for individual congregations as well, but no email or phone is listed for Byrd's church in Jonesville, only a street address).

Those buffoons will liken any backlash to being crucified. I live about 30 miles from there and my wife and I always joke(its better than crying) about that area Jonesville-Union(home of the white woman who drove her kids in a lake and blamed black car jackers and all local PDs went out harassing black men, she did this because the man she was having an affair with didnt want kids).

I'm bothered much more by a different quote of his (emphasis mine):
Apparently it's not enough to say you're a Christian, or even to demonstrate you're a Christian through church attendance. Byrd is wondering if Obama is a "secret" Muslim. I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
The article and these comments seem to paint this as racism, but it seems to reflect a lack of understanding of Islam more than of Barack Obama. When Byrd asks, "Is he Muslim?" he's assuming that being Muslim is the same as wanting to destroy America. I would find this shorthand shocking if I hadn't already seen it demonstrated by countless others. Now it only disheartens me.

This is a reality check about the state of our country. We live in a country that is diverse, segregated, etc. It is a wake up call really. We need some community orgnanizers up in that place. Isolating people isn't good, living in isolation isn't good, because then you are only around people that are like you. I blame the government to some degree because what about education in that area, what about job creation etc? There is a lot of bigotry in our world, and we needed this reality check. It will keep our country from moving forward if we don't engage folks like these, cause they *will* keep voting for Bush and the like.

It actually suits the powers that be to keep us Americans divided- based on race, religion, abortion, etc. It suits the a-holes to keep black and white divided. I bet you anything those folks have issues, but instead of verbalizing that, they go after Obama- someone different from them. That is threatening to people. But this division benefits the powers that be. It doesn't suit our government for the American people to come together. These racial divisions keep things in a stalemate in places like those.
