Live From New York (and Los Angeles)

In case anyone missed it, I posted a thread last night encouraging TPM readers to join the new TPM-aholics group at my.barackobama.com in order to organize for the to-be-determined Democratic nominee (not naming names) and connect up off-line.

We're kicking off the group with simultaneous primary-results-watching parties in NYC and LA, where we'll be drinking Yuengling (from PA) and spiked Kool-Aid (because we're all Kool-Aid drinkers). We'll be live blogging the events until the networks call it* or we all pass out**, whichever comes first. If you don't hear from anyone, that just means that we're having too good a time to blog. Or that we've all passed out.

So please join the group, and think about organizing activities in your own locales. BTW, articleman has already suggested an Obama fundraiser with a Q & A from a member of the campaign or even, if there are enough participants, the man himself. We'll keep you posted.

* I really hope that the networks don't call it immediately, for a number of reasons.

** I really hope that we don't all pass out immediately, for a number of reasons.

BTW, we need a logo for the group. TPM is all for us organizing, but they can't endorse us, and we can't use their logo. So please make suggestions by switching your avatar, and we'll pick a winner.

Hi Genghis, wish I was there.

Does the logo need to be long and skinny like TPMs?

Genghis,

To really show your Obamized-tech mastery, people should be blogging on their iPhones (Blackberries are sooooo yesterday) in real time here.

Good luck!

Hmm, typing on an iPhone might be tricky when you're drunk. But as for the coolness factor, you got it.

That was not posted from my iPhone.

PS Where in LA?

Clearthinker, Diet offered to host something at his place. He posted the address to the mybo group ...

URL?

Sorry man, too late tonight. I'll host the next primary results! Sushi included.

avatar

Genghis,

We're all waiting for the results with bated breath. What's the turnout like? The demographic splits?

We're counting on you for aimless analysis of these numbers to fill the time until we get some real results.

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, you're welcome to use my avatar as your logo. I feel it's time to put our differences behind us, and how better than sharing monikers and other paraphenalia, just like GI's plowing into Germany some 63 years ago. Anyone want some raisins as well? Nylons? Comic books?

I'm starting to like your style, Clintonite devil-spawn.

People are trying to eat there, you little puke.

Technically a "big puke" - Allsburg is the little puke, though at 64 pixels hard to tell the difference.

It's gonna be a long night.

Pass me a beer.

You betcha

(clink)

(clink)

In honor of the evening, I have switched from blunts to phillies.

:)

Based on my hazy recollection - those are the same thing. My nasal cavities still cinch up at the idea of smoking tobacco...

I know elitism is a bad thing in these parts - but you really should invest in something better than schwag. Better buzz if nothing else.

Uh... aren't you supposed to be drinking a latte?

You're all so calm and cool-looking... But I am a bit of an anxious wreck!

When are those results gonna come in????

Why does it say Clinton 65%, Obama 35% on the bottom bar at MSNBC??

Help!! (Pass a beer, too.)

Am I drunk, or are they calling this too soon?

I made a quickie logo, but my avatar doesn't ant to update, so I put it here:

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4420/tpmaholicspd0.jpg

:)

Nice.

I like it!

I like it...but they usually use paper coffee cups at meetings, don't they?

Can't you work a Prius in there somehow? Some Birkenstocks?

Good point. (As usual.)

Yes, make the cup a latte as per my comment above.

This *is* supposed to be an Obama thing, right? Or am I mistaken?

How about a birkenstock clad foot smashing down the logo a la Monty Python, then a Prius zooming over the big toe?

:D

I'd need a model. Volunteers?

Nice work, workerbee. Andrew, is this OK?

Is it over that quick?

Nominating this thread for unofficial Open Thread for election night chatter. And tipping a fine west coast brew (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale) in your direction. Cheers!

So right now it looks like the results are holding steady at about 53/47. My question is, anyone know where these results are from? In other words, is the gap likely to increase or decrease? I've got this fear that the results we've seen so far are heavily weighted on the Philly-area, and the spread will start slowly increasing...

Feel free to play with my google election map, which I posted in an earlier thread today.

Meanwhile, Hillary's points are now at +10, with 31% reporting. They were at +6 with 17% reporting just a bit ago.

Now she's back down to +8 with 33% reporting.

Like I said....it's gonna be a long night.

(Clink)

Great map! (Clink)

Well, I had high hopes for an upset, but....deep down, didn't all of us Obama supporters?

Meantime, it's at +8 for Hillary with 72% reporting.

But what is her total delegate net count?

And what's her net pop vote gain? Not nearly enough. ;-)

looks like a spread of about 140K with 75% reporting, to that extrapolates to 180K, assuming the percentages are similar for the remaining vote count. for what that's worth.

demconwatch is projecting 64C - 56O, with about 38 congressional district delegates to be determined.

Is that from an early Genesis album cover?

Here's a link to a PA delegate count tracker: estimate Hillary up by 15. Two Philadelphia suburban CD's still unaccounted for.

Oops, here is the link, courtesy of DK.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/22/11912/6533/642/500733

Delegate count just changed -- Hillary's lead declined from 15 to 13 delegates. CDs 6 and 7 still not in.

Early in this election the story was that the pollsters couldn't predict anything. Now I think they've gotten reasonably good at predicting. The spread is coming out exactly where Pollster had it.

So the campaign will continue for another two weeks of sound and fury, changing nothing about the underlying demographics or the math.

Hello, echo chamber. 10 points? Think it will hold? The Revolution lives! You should all meet at Dizzy's in Park Slope for breakfast. Say hello to readytoblowagasket for me. Try to lose gracefully. I'll be rubbing it in tomorrow.

I'm here. I prefer not to watch pots boil.

Hillary gets her 10% tonight. Which is just enough to confound everyone. It wasn't decisive (she used to be *deep* into double digits) and Obama lost momentum at the end. So, we go on to IN and NC.

I love this political season.

Too bad she couldn't quite reach 10 points. Will have you Hill fans having to debate rounding percentages between now and May 6. Have fun with that.

I saw that the NYT did that! I've never seen anyone refuse to round up before. You know she was endorsed by the editorial board. I suspect that there are some individual editors that are really pissed at her. I love it.

I don't get it, Billy - should I show up and ruin their breakfast, or stay away and figure it was ruined anyway? Or if it's San Francisco, I could wear some flowers in my hair...

Um, according to CNN, she won 55-45%, with a margin of over 200,000. 96% reporting. Grrr.

However, as Rabbit Hussein Smorgasbord points out on another thread, this leaves Obama with an insurmountable lead in pledged delegates, a strong lead in the popular vote, and a huge advantage in fundraising ability.

Hi folks. Here I am. Sorry about the severe lack of live blogging. No internet connection at the bar. OK, that's a little disingenuous. In truth, there was no internet connection at the bar, but I only discovered that around midnight when I turned on my computer.

In any case, I've got good news and bad news.

Good news: Clinton didn't win by 15%.

Bad news: Clinton didn't win by 6%*.

*6% was my prediction. Flyonthewall predicted a bigger win for Clinton. Let this be a lesson to all of us. Never doubt flyonthewall.

Good news: The results-watching party was a smashing success. We took over the whole bar. There were forty or fifty people there. The usual NYC Obama bar, Irish Rogue, was apparently a dud, and people came from there to our party.

Bad news: NO THANKS TO TPM!!!! The bar was listed on an Obama site, and almost all the attendees came because they found it there. There were a mere three TPM attendees: Me, DirkVA (who's very cool and quite funny in person. I recommend.), a self-described lurker named Jeff (who's also cool, I hope that he posts soon), and a guy named Matt who does not frequent TPM but knows Andrew Golis.

In a word, LAME. And it seems that the L.A. get together didn't even happen. What with you people? You're all blog and no alcohol. I expect better the next time around.

Hmm, those of us watching at home were all blog andalcohol. More than we can say for you lame non-live-bloggers!

Seriously, the idea for a live meet-up was very cool, and I hope you propose some more meets between now and November. See you in SF in June? ;-)

Srsly. Remind us of the June dates again, and we'll show you that San Franciscans can blog *and* party. (Blarty? Plog?)

Also, any (either) of you Bay Area peeps interested in some sort of May 6th event? If so, do you have any thoughts on a bar that would show election returns? (Though I suppose WiFi plus laptop is another option.)

Bouncer wouldn't let me in so I crashed a bar mitzvah instead - from the looks on their faces it wasn't an open bar either, but what the hey.

Is that an anti-semitic remark? ;-)

Only if you set the bar very low (which would help me reach my drink about now)

Genghis,

LA is where people show to a Dodger game by about the 3rd inning and leave by the 7th inning stretch.

We have movies to make in the morning you know.

Have to keep you people on the east coast entertained.

And we prefer sex to alcohol.... This is Hollywood, y'know?

TPM readers know that they don't want to let any of us out of the echo chamber and into the real world where we can harm the physical universe.

avatar

Genghis,

Sorry about the uncreative username but hey, you got me to post. After a *long* day all I've got to say is thanks for putting this together. Ended up being a good combination of conversation, bitterness, Tourette's, and a guy obsessed with Larry David.

Excellent. Welcome to the wacky world of TPM posting. Take care, though. It can be addictive. Thanks for coming by last night. It was great to meet you.

(Yeah, what was with the Larry David guy? Was he also the one who was going on about Abercrombie & Fitch?)

Sorry I missed your soiree. I tried to send a friend of mine in NYC as a surrogate, but unfortunately he had a prior engagement at a another fine drinking establishment. Besides, someone has to stand guard in the cornfields of Indiana with pitchforks and torches at the ready. I did, however, hoist a couple of PBRs this afternoon at my local lakeside dive with a guy that bore an uncanny resemblance to David Crosby. Mr. Crosby seemed to be very dismissive of Hillary Clinton's choice of whiskey (Crown Royal). He ironically thought it was elitist. Low turnout may have been due to short notice. Have you organized a list of buzzword shots yet? Drink on young patriots!

Genghis;
We are on the same page. I am on my way to work, but here is a post I ddi last night. I will look up your connection point later today.

THIS IS A CALL TO ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS!

Genghis, SCMadden, LisB, TenaX, Missouri Voter, Cswartout, Independentmeans, Scientifc,
Opus Hussein X, CT Voter, anna am, Severus,
NCSteve, Barrackistan, Pheobe Fay, Schmedley,
vicissitudes, SpaceCat, PaDem, FreeBubba,
Cricket4, Demosar, liam and anyone else who would like to help:

I watched helplessly this last week while HRC piled on to Obama, and I want to do something about it. I tried every way I could to reach any Dem 527 groups because I wanted to suggest an ad that showed HRC criticizing Obama for being out of touch, then segue into the quote which at least 2 people have verified that HRC said "screw em" when referring to Southern working class voters.

I know that we are going to be very important in the general because recent history gives little indication that the Dems can counter the Swift Boaters. I am certain we will have an important role to play.

But I think we should start now. Anyone whose name is not on my list about, please pardon my omission. I picked the most familiar ones to me, with no intent to slight any Obama supporters.

I want to try to start organizing now-ASAP before Indiana and see what we come can up with by way of making a real contribution to stopping HRC. I think we need to proactive NOW. For example, I think something like that "screw em" idea could have won a couple points in the Pa primary.

SO PLEASE COME ONE AND ALL. Let's put our heads together and see what we can come up with.

I really feel like we need to help try to end this as soon as possible. Our candidate needs to get out there, for himself and for the congressional candidates who need help.

My name is David R. Wilbur and my email is drwilbur@gmail.com. Please put something in the message that identifies a response to this posting so I do not accidentally delete any responses.

Let's take out passion and make it happen.

Go Obama!!

Just to chime in - not in NYC. But I did come up with a logo Idea.

Hope it uploaded.

E

I changed my avatar just to change my avatar!

Okay, this is weird. Last night, from home, I switched to a different Ric Flair pic. It came up with all my posts. Now I'm at work and the old Flair photo is back... I'm confused.

The site seems to glitch a bit. I was enjoying Clearthinker's improved image, when the old one reverted.

I have come up witha TPMaholic logo, and all my posts now have that image. So much for my idea of changing my image regularly...

avatar

I love the irony of Elliot Ness with a bottle of booze.

Good catch. I will certainly have to keep it now...

Good morning, folks. Time for a little post-party analysis...

1) I'm hungover

2) The party was most excellent despite the lack of TPMers and the fact that PA can kiss my ass. (Yuengling is dead to me now.) I think I'll do it again in two weeks. Are there any breweries in NC or IN?

3) Cheers to DirkVA and newly registered Jeff_D for coming by. For those of you who didn't make it, I have two words: May 6. OK, it's more like one word and one number. May Sixth. Now it's two words.

4) TPM-aholics is doing great. We've got 75 members so far. Emails have been going out to establish connections in Seattle and Denver, and people have been talking about events in L.A. and San Francisco. (The first rule of Fight Club...) In addition, articleman and few others of us are looking into putting together an online fundraiser and Q & A. I can't hit NC or IN, but if any of you head there in the next couple of weeks, you might think about coordinating with other TPM people. And if anyone organizes something, please blog about it at mybo. When you post in your own blog, you can mark groups that you want share it with. In fact, I will cross-post this at TPM-aholics.

5) Thanks for the excellent group logo suggestions by workerbee and elliottness. Preferences anyone? I lean towards workerbee's, but elliottness's is also good. TPM may have a problem with workerbee's though because it may be too close to the TPM logo. I'll check with Andrew.

6) It looks like Mila the orgasmic troll is back after having been banned as Milla and Milla J. If anyone from TPM reads this, please ban it again.

7) I will be heading out to San Francisco the first week of June. Puerto Rico results watching party anyone? Maybe you west coasters can show the New Yorkers how it's done.

8) Barack Obama, no offense, you're still my main man, but will you win this friggin' primary already?!!!!!!!!

9) Still hungover. On so many levels.

Well I like elliots, (being the lush I am, of course I do) but I kinda think the bottle should be lying on it's side, like it's an empty.

:)

I'll try to tweek mine a bit this evening (Make it a latte, put a birkenstock clad foot stomping a prius on the cup, make it a paper cup maybe...), but right now I have to draw a superhero... (Power of 10 man).

BTW, I'm not hungover, but hair o the dog always works for me. It doesn't take much, just a couple swallows.

Feel better, and thanks for all you do.

I like both logos, but workerbee's seems to shrink better. Elliotness' needs to be bigger. Call that a slight preference for workerbee's, but I very much enjoy the implication that the TMP-aholic Obama group is a bunch of lushes.

avatar

Dear Genghis,

Sorry I couldn't make it last night, but I'll shoot for May 6.

Very exciting!

Great. I hope to see you then.

I just want to flag a request from DirkVA on the original thread since that's off the list. Please limit mass emails to organizational activities specifically related to elections and TPM, and be mindful of overloading people with messages, particularly messages related to local events.

There are, however, alternatives. You can create an event in mybo. People can see the event but won't get emails about it. And you can blog.

I am guessing that I am the guilty party in my efforts to share my logo

Being on a listserv is an overload? You can change to no email notifications or just daily digests to slow the flow...

Actually, it was another one, but you added flames to the fire. I reject and denounce your emails.

I'd like people to feel that they don't need to turn off or limit their email notifications so that we can use it for important stuff. And frankly, I'd don't want to turn off my own notification. So I'm just pushing alternatives when they exist. In the case of your email, a blog posting would be sufficient. In fact it would be better because then people could post comments.

Hi folks. I just want promote another great Zaftig post that fell of the list:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/04/today-something-even-clinton-a.php

Give it some love.

I also want to plug this underappreciated post:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/04/clinton-and-obama-both-lead-mc.php

I'm considering reposting it.

I recommended. I love that you were accused of pushing "useful" posts off the list. If you repost, I would fill it out. It's got potential but in my esteemed opinion needs more than the one punchline.

Here's one more piece of snark that sadly fell off the list:
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/04/trolls-declare-victory.php

That didn't work. Trying this:
http//tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/04/trolls-declare-victory.php

That was clever.

Wow. Your link sent me here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

Ouch. Campy and appropriate enough to be HRC's new theme song though.

Oh, the broken link worked for me the first time... didn't realize that's where I was supposed to go in the first place. I couldn't watch the whole thing. It burns my eyes.

My friend, you've been rick-rolled.

PS You're not supposed to watch it. Indeed, I recommend against it. For health reasons.

Uh Oh, everyone's gone.

Well, it IS late.

I redid the coffee as requested:

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/8615/tpmaholics2ir1.jpg

I hope someone sees this

:(

It was fun

:)

Excellent. It deserves its own post.

Thanks workerbee. Would you shrink it down please? If you keep it within 160x160 it will be the same size as elliotness. Also, it needs a disclaimer, unfortunately, because the font is similar to TPM's. Andrew requested the following, but I don't know how it can all fit in:

TPM is a trademark of TPM Media LLC. TPM Media LLC is not affiliated with and does not endorse this website.

Once you make changes, I'll set up a logo-off over at mybo.

OK, 160 pixels it is

I changed the font
