Joe Watkins should be suspended from MSNBC

avatar

I don't mind hearing the points of view of Republican pundits.
To offer an opinion about the effects Rev. Wright has had on Obama is fair.

But here's how Joe Watkins just characterized it on MSNBC:
"Whites are running from (Obama) in droves."
That's just not civil discourse by any stretch.
It's one of the most toxic proclamations I've heard about the race issue.  It's in Sean Hannity territory.
Maybe I'm wrong.  What are your thoughts on this?

Everytime I hear reference to 'White Voters' as a monolithic blue collar secretly racist at least in the voting booth (usually accompanied by Obama criticism) - since I am a white voter, blue collar and a woman I yell at the TV 'Speak for yourself asshole!'.

Strange though - I don't think they hear me.

Another TPM blogger pointed out that Obama's critics have this habit of giving him no benefit of the doubt - 'Guilty before proven innocent' - but ever-expanding benefit of the doubt to HRC... I'm still stunned that NOTHING has been said of her threat to 'Destroy Iran'... we haven't even heard that kind of shit from cowboy Bush... yet - forfucksake.

Obama is weak for not divorcing Wright before this week but Hillary gets to ride her victimhood into elected office for NOT divorcing her lecherous husband?

Speak it mama SPEAK IT!!

I knew there were some of you out their, that GET this shit.
I just wish their were more of you out their telling these other people to speak for themselves. Let us know that everyone isnt that type. Because I'll tell now that there are ALOT of people in this country that think you all are all the same.
Of course I personally know you're not. But its hard to tell when thats all they put out all day.

SPEAK.

avatar

The (Reverand, I believe) Joe Watkins comes across as a bigger buffoon than Rev. Wright. These same old guest pundit appearances are why I've stopped watching cable news.

avatar

Joe Watkins is without question the worst. I think MSNBC likes to use him because his agressive attacks against Obama are more interesting coming from a black man.

avatar

Hey, I am white and I am NOT running away. MSNBC is a mess.

avatar

The problem I'm having with MSNBC lately is that the regularly scheduled assholes(Buchanan, Scarborough, Carlson, and Matthews) far outnumber the good guys (Olbermann, Schuster).

avatar

The other 2 good guys are females and they are not called on to speak as often. But Rachel Maddow and Michelle Bernard both do a good job of telling the facts and the truth far moreso than spin you get from Scarborough/Buchanan...but both those chauvinistic pigs can barely contain themselves when Bernard or Maddow speak OVER and INTERRUPT them JUST AS those loud mouths talk over Rachel and Michelle whenever they can.

Rachel and Michelle do NOT back down or back off their points though and more importantly they state why what Scarborogh and Buchannand rant on about just ISN't SO!!

Go Rachele, go Michelle!!

avatar

@new10

Likewise I stopped watching cable news long ago. The yelling and talking over one another is irritating and counter-productive. I cannot stand it. Although I have been watching a little bit the past few weeks to get a sense of which candidate they want to tear down for the week. However the droning on and on about the same trivial talking points makes me want to pull my hair-out!

It is amazing how little they cover McCain's gaffes and ill thought out policies. His foreign policy is nothing compared to Bush. John McCain is by-far much more hawkish -- more along the lines of neocons on steroids!

see:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/134317

Watkins' ties to the Bush dynasty make anything he says not worthy of a news organization.

Oh, we're talking about MSNBC -- sorry!

Watkins is a piece of GOP dirt.

avatar

I'll trade you Watkins for Tweety. Tweety's hammered Clinton everyday with some similar inanity for 12 months straight.

Fire them both.

avatar

Tweety has (yet another) man crush. Its been McCain ever since he interviewed him at Villanova U. Tweety is quite fickle. I guess he just can't resist a man uniform.

avatar

Has anyone started a petition to have him banned from MSNBC??

The other day he said that Rev. Wright's "job is not to be a civil rights leader." Yeah, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was just a motivational speaker.

He keeps mis-informing the viewers about the extent of Rev. Wright's relationship with Obama. He was NOT his spiritual advisor and mentor; he was his PASTOR. There is a difference.

I wish someone, on air, would ask Watkins if he himself has watched each and every last sermon Rev. Wright has given over the past 30 years. If he hasn't, which I presume is the case, then he has NO right to sit there and perpetuate the ridiculous argument that Obama's judgment is tainted for having sat in the pews of that church for 20 years. Other members of TUCC were similarly outraged by the controversial sermons looped over and over, yet not one MSM outlet has interviewed any of these members.

I HATE JOE WATKINS WITH A PASSION.

avatar

I don't hate anyone with a passion, but I do think what Joe Watkins said is despicable.

The other day he said that Rev. Wright's "job is not to be a civil rights leader." Yeah, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was just a motivational speaker.
Well said, seek_the_truth!
avatar

I can't STAND Watkins, either!!

Capehart can go too!!

Bruce Braley is white isn't he?

So am I.

Braley is a SuperD, he just endorsed Obama.

and I gave Obama some cash today because I felt compelled to make a personal statement about Wright, and I felt that was the best way to express how I feel.

Midnight tonight is the deadline for contributions, so if you got it, send it via the internet ASAP!

White flight from Obama?

If they are running away from him now, they already had thier backs turned long before Wright became a contrived media issue.

Totally accurate. I'm surprised MSNBC: "The Official Obama Cable Network" allowed Rev. Watkins to provide an alternate point of view on that network.

yawn....

MSNBC is far from the Obama network. They have hammered the Rev. Wright controversy for days.

Keith O is the only one that seems to give Obama a semi break, but that was not until Hillary and Bill started playin dirty a couple months ago after she was solidly defeated on Super Tues.
Then there is the hypocrisy of Hillary regarding Florida & Michigan. Signing off on and agreeing to the DNC’s ruling about those states, but then as soon as she needed said states cause she's getting her tail end whipped in votes and delegates. Suddenly she then starts flip-flopping about the need to recognize these two states democratic primary totals & delegates.
Priceless.

Is it any surprise that folks are running from Obama in droves?! Maybe "in droves" is a bit of an exaggeration but Obama is losing support.

Have you all drank so much Kool-Aid that you haven't had second thoughts yourself?

Matthew

What people?

Come on - jesus. What people? Y'all are the absolutely worst about making baseless statements I've seen.

"Maybe "in droves" is a bit of an exaggeration but Obama is losing support."

..yes droves is a bit much, since he's leading in the polls and all...

Good morning, I think 'leading in the polls' is almost past tense as some new ones from NC show Clinton with a slim lead, same now with a bigger margin in IN. I suspect we will see her take a notable lead in today's Gallup poll as well. There is a shift and the coming days will bear out that this is a abberation (your hope) or a growing trend (mine).

Matthew

Nope, it's been essentially tied since Pennsylvania.

PRINCETON, NJ -- National Democratic voters are essentially divided in their presidential nomination preferences between Hillary Clinton (47%) and Barack Obama (46%), according to April 27-29 Gallup Poll Daily tracking results.

Maybe tomorrow, though. Keep hope alive, Matt.

avatar

That should be "one" new poll, singular. All others give him at least a 5 point lead.

I don't mean to attack Rev. Watson, I've been to his church and he extended a hand to me when I needed it, but having said that, Joe is about as partisan as it comes. He served in Bush 41's White House and has been flacking for the GOP ever since.

Now if Joe could get his church membership up to 1/3 of Rev Wright's he might have some sway when it comes to representing the black church.

So?

channeling Dick Cheney?

why am I not surprised?

avatar

ha ha! HTX with a solid shot on whack-a-troll!

My thought on this? He's lying through his teeth.

Watkins is a cable-news troll. He was on with Alex Witt earlier in the day and was asked to analyze an Obama ad that of course had nothing to do with Wright. He ignored the ad completely and started going on about Wright and how Obama had utterly failed to address the issue, it would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever go away, etc. A few seconds later, asked about another ad, he did the same thing. Witt just sat there, smiling and nodding.

Witt, by the way, is the same one who Kerry went after today, and she laughed at him for objecting to the obsession with Wright.

I've never been able to stand Witt...

She used to host countdown in the early days, we couldn't change the channel fast enough on those days..

She leans right for sure, and is about as sharp as a marble in doing so.

avatar

it's funny or not but i was beside myself today about watson, so disgusted in fact that i emailed msnbc to complain. he is an expert on what? his view isn't even cloaked in balance. he is a reverend (?), a right wing shill and an embarrassment. i can't figure why he is the go-to-guy on wright. he is a racist, right wing toad. he brings nothing to the discussion except division, hate, and rancor

avatar

He is the go to guy based on the color of his skin and NOT the content of his character. He gets to say all types of things that would be labelled racist if his skin color was different. Since it isn't he is just a asshole bigot, instead who spews nothing but GOP talking points all day long....GOP COLORED talking points is what Watkins is.

avatar

Joe Scarborough's Morning Joe features Rev Eugene Rivers III. Rev Rivers is the African-American head of the Azuza Church in Boston

What I have not seen detailed on the show is the fact that Rivers was part of GW Bush's WH Faith Based Initiative Outreach Program. Rivers left the group when John Dililuo left.

Obviously Rev Joe Watkins and Rev Eugene Rivers are the only African-American ministers that MSNBC can find. It is just coincidence that both MSNBC analysts happen to be more Conservative than 90% of the Black community that thy are called on for commentary on matters of race.

avatar

They are not just more conservative they are in the pockets of the GOP just like Bishop Eddie Long in Lithonia.

If you go flying back through time and you see somebody else flying forward into the future, it's probably best to avoid eye contact.

I'm tired of MSNBC and other news shows bringing on conservative black pundits to criticize Democratic black politicians.

I agree with you. Watkins is simply providing cover for the white hosts. He is absolute SCUM! All of the news outlets are guilty of this "blaxploitation". It's not transparent - at all.

avatar

ABSOLUTELY!!

avatar

MSNBC is skitzy. They are being challenged on their role in the feeding frenzy more directly now.

WP "editiorial writer" Jonathan Capehart is interesting. His last piece was published on March 1 and his tenure there is of recent vintage. Has been appearing on MSNBC far longer. Seems to me the WP "employment" is a ruse. He's a regular, very urbane.

Re: Tweety's latest flame.

Tweety has put McCain aside for now. Mayhill Fowler's "bitter" thingie greaty offended him and turned him against Obama.

Then Hilly went to PA and did a boilermaker.

Hillary's adaptation of her Scranton homegirl persona has sent him over the 'effin moon. It's almost as if he's back in high school and she's the kind of chick he yearned after from afar over back in the day.

Something about Watkins, and I don't know anything about this guy's cv, but guys like him and J.C. Watts, they're hired to perform a scummy task. They're trotted out to show how balanced is the reporting of the network, how "objective" blacks can be when assessing one of their own, and to show that though we may all look the same we're not a monolithic block of voters. They're Afro-American but their souls are obscured by blackface. They're henchmen, nothing more, and they're guilty of black on black crime.

avatar

Exactly. The only worthwhile thing that guys like Watkins and Watts show is that AAs can be asshats, just like anybody else. How's that, for proving our commonality!

Nicely put.

avatar

Is there a letter requesting MSNBC to rid themselves of the likes of Pat Buchanan, Joe Watkins and the rest of those self hating black folks who appear daily? I would like to sign on. Possibly a move for Moveon.org to be a part in getting a balanced commentary.

What's up with Miss Johnathan Capehart.? Does he ever say nice things about anyone besides Hillary?

avatar

heheheheeh snicker...LOVING it!!
such a sycophant...missy get's on my LAST nerve.

Capeheart is totally Hillary's.

MSNBC is an icky place. I love it when the Irish contingent- Tweety, Patrickkk Buchanan, Jive Scarborough, and Russert, that sausage casing (doesn't he look exactly like Family Guy Peter Griffin?) sit around and try to talk to and dissect Black America. And they do this with such shameless authority, Jeesus!

Sometimes the producers will toss Rachel Maddow into the mix. Man, I don't know how the girl does it. How she maintains her equilibrium in the face of such oozing sanctimonious condescending bullshit. How she hasn't gone postal yet is beyond me.

avatar

The thing is, Tweety decided to run for Senator in PA, so he had to suck up to Rendell & Clinton, so that ended the tingle up his leg for Obama pretty quick. Forget the 'bitter' thing. He's jumping on Obama for everything now & praising Hillary like he's Joe Scarborough.

What I wish some of these talking heads would do is just say in the beginning, "Hey, I am really for Candidate X, so you should take my opinion with a grain of salt."

Scarborough admits that Hillary is his girlfriend. That is a start. But some of these 2ndary guys should have to state their creds, too. For instance, when Pat Buchanan comes on, it should say "Avowed Xenophobe" under his name. Then, when he is saying that everything Obama does is bad, people would understand why he is saying that.

avatar

Fierst, I will vote for whomever the Democratic nominee is. Second, many people are just waking up to what a racist country we are. Pennsylvania shows that. In the South with larger populations of black voters, Obama wins. This fracture is going to come back to bite the party in November. What is a shame, either Clinton or Obama would/will be a much better President than Mccain. He lost a lot of people with his toddler embrace of Bush on stage at a political rally. The Straight Talk Express had a blowout then. His campaign is becoming incoherent.

avatar

Fortunately, this probably won't matter in the long run. We in campaign circles are hearing more and more about the "Denver Plan" which would solve all of this primary mess. Articles have been appearing in various publications to get people ready for the idea. Here are a couple:

http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=59366

http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/calling-al-gore/?hp

Obama is winning. Im sorry, he deserve the same benefit of doubt the Hillary gets that if he is the nominy, the Dems will rally around him. So alls Im saying is its almost offensive to be asking Gore to come in and save the Party now. I love Gore, but again, Obama is winning. This can/SHOULD be resolved by the super dels as the last nail! Gore need not get involved other than making an endorsement if he would like in my opinion. All that would do is create more of a problem if he decided to run!

avatar

Whites are running from Joe Watkins in droves.

He got the narrative out their, and his sheep and Hillary supporters are perfectly willing to promote it. Truth matters not to them, they create the stories remember. The hate mongors, MSM, and Hillary supporters are perfectly willing to carry the message for him/them! Im just glad a place like TPM exists, so when they push back on that garbage Im not left to believe the narative. Their are good people out there who are not that simple minded!

There! Dammit!

Also so sick. Hear the dog whisle....It's ok white people. You have plenty of reason not to vote for him now, knowone will call you racist.....(Vomit) These people truly make me ill!

A "Denver Plan", huh? It sounds like a long shot, but I suppose it's possible if Clinton could be made to back off from her scorched earth campaign. But let's look at this: There is no love whatsoever between ClintonInc. and the Gore camp. None. So, She will have been thwarted, or nearly so, by the upstart Obama, then Al Gore is put forth as a compromise candidate to save the life of the party. That's two men who appear on the scene to deny her the prize she has always believed to be in her destiny. Does anyone really see her accepting this?

Let's riff on this "Denver Plan" for a moment: The soft-sell by party bosses would have to be that if McCain is elected this year, Clinton is to be assured/promised the frontrunner spot in 2012, but that only works if all other Dem contenders only pretend to run in the next cycle, knowing they must eventually roll over to grant her this spot, hmmm. Now, Michelle Obama has already indicated that if this doesn't work out for Barack this year there will be no second attempt in 2012, so that would seem to take care of him.

Or, Clinton just goes ahead and steals the nomination, everyone else be damned!. This irrevocably destroys the Democratic party. People like me are pleased because we finally get our third party, but the world gets President McCain.
So many things to consider. What fun!

One other thing: Can we get a snap poll up on TPM? What I want to know is after all the Hillary Hate, if she becomes the nominee, how many haters are going to hang their heads, put tail between legs, and begin the long painful slink back to the Clinton plantation? Or, how many will stay home, or write-in Thomas Pynchon as their presidential choice, or go with Darth Nader? This is important.

Sounds like thats a question for the Supers to be pondering. If she were to obtain the nomination, it will have been given to her by them. So if they're defense in that doesnt pass the smell test, then we would no what allot of people would do. I hope people dont answer that question until we see how the elections are carried out!

I know....Bad Grammer...but you get my point!

lol...Grammar!

avatar

I'm not particularly bothered by the comment: because it's probably true.

Generally speaking, I don't really like being PC, that is, if what you say is true, then I could really care less.

Case in point: Chelsea is being pimped out by her Bill and Hillary.

avatar

I wrote this post. My intention is not to elevate hatred, but rather, to fiercely object to MSM discourse that goes way out of bounds.

I welcome all opinions, including the opinion of Joe Watkins.

But his statement "Whites are running from (Obama) in droves" is what I call "analysis with malice".

And he should be forced to recognize this by MSNBC.

If you agree, I encourage you to email or call MSNBC to protest Joe Watkin's remarks.

If someone has the MSNBC email address or phone number, please post it.

avatar

I totally agree! He is supposedly an ordained minister. This guy is a political hack! One of the MSNBC anchors asked him a guestion, which he totally went off based and questioned Obama's judgement regarding Wright. (as we say, when playing the dozens -
(this guy must be either applying or administering sexual favors to Bush & McCain) - I tried to say it nicely~

Yet, no MSM mouthpiece or Republican pundit ever questions Bush, McCain, or Clinton's judgment regarding sending 4,000 plus to die in a useless, unjust war! I'll taking knowing Rev. Wright (although a bit on the deep end) never sent young men an women to war!

JOE WATKINS IS INTRODUCING THE RACE CARD!!!!

I think these might help:

I read some interesting and introspective comments on this site and decided to join. I have resorted to sending email to every news organization when I perceive something outrageous as what is happening at MSNBC.

Thanks for the contact information. A letter will be going out today expressing my disappointment with the talking head selections and their biased talks. Guess Joe gets a pass cause he clearly states he has no regard for anything about Barack Obama as he is in bed with Hillary.

Next step is to contact the sponsors of the programs and express my concerns. No money to run the show no show on air. Remember the Tucker Carlson rants. He is reduced to useless commentary on others shows

Watkins always makes his comments with a smile on his face and a gleam in his eyes. He knows, down to a nanogram, exactly how he's lying and why.

I HATE MSNBC.

The only one worth watching is KO.

The questions I have after this week is whether black America -- specifically media people and pastors in the media and media moguls -- want and are ready for a black president. I'm starting to feel that the answer is no.
