Hillary, the Corporate Media, and the Fleecing of Small Town America

Hillary Clinton’s chief strategist Geoffrey Garin recently said that Barack Obama's comments about small-town America

“would be "damaging" to him in a general election, could set back the Democratic Party's efforts to reach heartland voters, and should be something that super-delegates consider when deciding whom to support.  These are the kinds of attitudes that have created a gulf between Democrats and lots of small-town and heartland voters that we've been working very, very hard to bridge."
Is this the same Clinton campaign that publicly ridiculed and dismissed the relevance of small-town American states during Hillary’s string of losses in January and February?   Are the “small town and heartland” voters in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas and Nebraska not as important as the small-town voters of Pennsylvania?  The characterization made by Geoffrey Garin is hypocritical beyond belief and the only thing more appalling is the readiness of the mainstream media to accept such statements as fact.  In reality, it is Hillary who has damaged her chances in the general election with her condescending treatment of states that she did not win, and even Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa has spoken publicly of his resentment at the way his state was belittled by Hillary.  In contrast to Hillary’s approach, Obama’s 50-state campaign has been actively trying to connect with voters in small towns and communities all across the nation, not just in the select states that are deemed important for delegate votes.

Why doesn’t the media comment on the discrepancy between Hillary’s words and her actions?  Maybe the media could ask the Clinton campaign to clarify exactly what they have been doing to bridge this gulf with small-town voters, as they claim, and what part of Hillary’s 35 years of experience were directed at such activity.  Was it her 15 years as a corporate lawyer serving the interests of powerful banks and corporations?  Was it her years on the board of directors of Walmart?  Is it her past support of NAFTA and Bill Clinton’s ongoing support of such free trade agreements?  Unfortunately, the media does not do the job it is supposed to do but rather acts as a mouthpiece for the Clinton campaign’s accusations and complaints.

John McCain’s campaign also jumped into the fray and called Obama’s comments elitist and condescending.  But why hasn’t the media scrutinized statements by John McCain that reveal a detachment towards American voters?  For example, John McCain recently explained his earlier opposition to the MLK holiday as simply a matter of his not having been aware of the “issue” of MLK (and by extension the Civil Rights movement) at the time.  He rationalized that he was part of the military, which he claimed to be the “greatest equal-opportunity employer in the nation” (a claim which warrants scrutiny in itself), and therefore we are to believe that he was in some way insulated from the societal turmoil regarding civil rights.  Unfortunately this explanation was accepted with little questioning by the media, but it demonstrates a shocking disconnect with American society.  John McCain was in his 20s and 30s during the Civil Rights movement and he was 47 years old when he voted against MLK Day.  If, by his own admission, he was out of touch with such important social and legal issues as civil rights over so many years, how can he connect with voters and deal with the ongoing social problems facing this country?

Clinton and McCain are clearly trying to exploit Obama’s recent comments to manipulate the emotions of small-town, mostly-white voters whom they consider to be their critical base.  But why are Clinton and McCain being allowed to dictate the terms of the election?  Why are small-town voters the only ones that seem to matter?  In reality, there are many segments of American society that are hurting and frustrated by years of government neglect and corporate greed, including:
• Inner city communities that have suffered from continuing cuts in critical infrastructure and social services, resulting in growing rates of unemployment, poverty, crime, and incarceration.
• Minority communities that have been victimized by decades of environmental racism, resulting in high levels of sickness, disease, and economic loss.
•  The diaspora of displaced Hurricane Katrina victims that cannot return home due to lack of available housing even while perfectly sound public housing is being destroyed to make room for a newer “whiter” New Orleans.
•  Military families that must cope with the care of severely injured or traumatized veterans with shockingly little support from government or military services.
•  Young people throughout the nation who will be paying the price, literally, for years to come for a bloated war budget and ever increasing national debt.
•  Family farmers whose livelihoods and way of life are being destroyed by the dominance of big agribusiness, soaring fuel prices, and lack of affordable credit.

While the vast majority of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, the media is all too happy to distract and divide the public with such diversions as Obama’s “gaffe”.  This is not surprising since the mainstream media (and especially right-wing media such as FOX news) are owned and controlled by corporate entities that directly benefit from the very policies that have contributed to the economic and social hardships of most Americans.  From the defense contractors and oil companies that benefit from our protracted wars to the prison industrial complex that benefits from the failed War on Drugs and the exploding prison population to the banking industry that has benefited from the growing consumer debt, the American people have paid a steep price for policies that serve the corporate interests over the public welfare.

Rather than speak out against these corporate powers and the corporate media that promote their interests, Hillary and Bill Clinton have been all to eager to cozy up to Rupert Murdoch and FOX news, Rush Limbaugh, and even Richard Mellon Scaife.  Apparently believing that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, Hillary and her surrogates have repeatedly worked through these right-wing media groups to attack Barack Obama.  However, in doing so, Hillary is implicitly validating and endorsing the credibility and legitimacy of these media groups that serve up a steady diet of corporate and government propaganda, tabloid journalism, and right-wing bigotry.

In some ways, the Clintons’ exploitation of such corporate media should not be a surprise since President Clinton supported and signed the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that started the explosion of media consolidation.  The Clinton policies promoted deregulation of the media, which led to greater corporate control of the news and information being fed to the public.  Hillary has been trying to use the corporate media to control the dialogue throughout the primary, but in doing so she has joined forces with the same corporate entities that have decimated our social fabric by the downsizing and outsourcing of jobs in the quest for record profits and that have mortgaged the future of the country with ruthless war profiteering.  This makes Hillary’s posturing about trying to bridge the gulf with small-town voters all the more hypocritical and shameful.

"Why doesn’t the media comment on the discrepancy between Hillary’s words and her actions?"

Because they are spineless scum who have no concept of truth or honor. In my opinion they are traitors and also accomplices to crimes against humanity, through their support of the Bush/Cheney lies.

After all we've been through in the last seven years, it makes me sick to the bottom of my soul to watch Hillary spew lies while the media half-wits lap them up like dogs.

I know what you mean. After these horrible Bush years, I never thought I would be seeing a Democratic pull the same type of Rove-inspired tactics...especially against a fellow Democrat! I just keep hoping that Hillary will stop these damaging attacks, but she just seems to get more and more desperate.

Obama joked about it yesterday. Something about Hillary getting him in shape for the general.

The media traitors are doing what they are paid to do.

Considering all the garbage we are exposed to it's very encouraging to notice that so many of us just don't buy it anymore.

More of us cannot be fooled by these freaks and their freak shows ... and desperate is far from convincing ... more like pathetic.

Maybe we should all threaten to bitterly shoot our TVs with those guns we "cling" to if they don't bring back the fairness doctrine (Or--as in my case--borrow our neighbors). That in and of itself would go a long way toward diffusing negative propaganda outlets like FauxNews.

I agree the 1996 Telecommunications Act was a horrid thing. I was quite involved in the fight to prevent further media consolidation when Michael Powell was chairman of the FCC. That effort paid off and also joined such diverse forces as the NRA and Code Pink.

You've hit upon a very good stick to whack Clinton with, even though she had nothing to do with it, she hasn't exactly called it an error. Good job.

That said, it wouldn't hurt for Obama's supporters to make this an issue with him.

I do have a minor bone to pick with you, Clinton is not fraternizing with Limbaugh, Bill never went on his show. That is just simply, a lie. Obama surely doesn't need any of those. Your posts don't need false flags to give them validity. In fact, it detracts from them.

See Limbaugh's show of 4/3 (yes, primary day in Ohio and Texas). Bill Clinton was on, and it was fairly widely publicized at the time.

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_030408/home.guest.html

No, He was on a local show in Texas. The host covered for Rush Limbaugh later that morning, but Buill was on the local show in Dallas.

Click on the audio link, it confirms the source, (WPAB--not EIB), and the time between 9:00 and 10:00 a,m, well before the Rush Show.

It hurts the Democrats in general to propagate lies like this.

If you want to claim Bill Clinton was on Rush's show that day because the guest host played clips from an earlier local interview, then by the same logic, Obama was on Rush as well, as they played clips from interviews Obama did.

Another cultist with those pesky reality-based facts. Clearly Obama should concede now, as he's an elitist who's arugula -filled life story is out of touch with most Americans. Hillary's down-to-earth beer-swiggin working-class roots make her much more electable. We need a fighter with real combat expierience to battle Mcain in November, and her heroic deeds in Tuzla her stunning success in bringing universal healthcare to all of us, along with her steadfast opposition to NAFTA, make her the better candidate. Obama's not seasoned enough yet and needs to take his seat at the back of the bus until the real pros in Washinton and the media decide for us that it's his time. Go Hillary!

Ex-President Clinton Talks to WBAP's Mark Davis

(WBAP) - Still campaigning for his wife on a critical primary election day, Ex-President Bill Clinton told WBAP's Mark Davis that he believes Hillary Clinton will defeat Democratic rival Barack Obama on Tuesday.

It's amusing to see I am back to being a Hillarybot.

Yeaterday I was an Obamabot.

The truth is I'm neither. I don't really care for either candidate.

You're welcome, by the way, as Senator Obama is above repeating lies and innuendo in the hopes of elevating discussion in this primary, I'm confident his supporters wouldn't want to be caught passing along a lie, publicized by a Republican. (Andrew Sullivan.)

Right?

Well, for what it's worth, this Obamabot appreciates the distinction you're making.

I went to Andrew's site fully expecting to see a retraction there. I mean it was so very easy to debunk.

There wasn't one. Furthermore, he used some mirror site rather than the original, which led me to believe he knew he was putting people on.

I left a pretty angry rebuttal on the Atlantic blogs.

I know Josh respects him, but I have to say, I think he's not above a bit of misdirection to further his aims, however noble he thinks they are.

As the nice poster JoshQ says below, question EVERYTHING.

I think there really is a lot of subtle GOP-type misinformation being posted here and taken on faith.

Our division is the result.

That just won't do, Ben. We need to win this time.

I understand your distinction, workerbee, but the fact is Bill Clinton went on a conservative Talk Show in Dallas, TX.

The guy who interviewed him went on to sub in for Rush, and obviously appreciates Rush (although, to his credit, did not urge people to follow "Operation Chaos." He disagreed with Rush on that).

So, the question remains: Why was Bill on a conservative radio talk show, who's host is linked to Rush? Why go there? He must have known there was going to be blowback!

Was there a "liberal" talk show for Bill to go on? In Texas? With high ratings?

Host of the most popular local talk show in Dallas/Fort Worth, Mark Davis took the Metroplex by storm in March, 1994 when he arrived at WBAP. Years of ratings dominance have followed in morning slot.

A journalism graduate of the University of Maryland, Mark began his career as a radio reporter in West Virginia and Florida. His first talk show opportunity arose at 24 in Jacksonville. The years thereafter led to popular shows in Memphis and Washington, DC before a return to his native Texas.

http://www.wbap.com/showdj.asp?DJID=1397

Do I think Bill C knew Davis was a conservative? Yes. I also think he knew Mark Davis had a very popular show listened to by a lot of commuting Texans. Which fact was important to him?

There's quite a big difference between a "popular local talk show" and Rush Limbaugh. Have you listened to the interview? It was professional, respectful, and fair. No one was saying that conservatives were great.

Do you think it's fair that the popular perception by Obama supporters is that Bill C went on Rush Limbaugh the morning of the Texas primary?

I don't.

Obama was on a conservative talk show the morning of the Wyoming Primary. Did anyone ream him out? Of course not. It would be absurd.

The fact is that 95% of ALL talk radio is conservative. So what? Now the candidates are to be judged guilty by association?

Fine, go ahead and say Bill Clinton went on a "conservative" talk show the morning of the Texas primary. Just don't say he went on Rush Limbaughs show, because that is blatantly false, and falsifiable.

Point taken, and made well.

Thanks.

That's very decent of you.

:)

. The media are using these words of Barack just as they did the Rev Wright loop...this time they are hoping because it is Obama's words it will hurt him.

Obama needs to shift this message and show how it is actually is message of hope. Anyone who knows how to reach his campaign and the Senator should be sure that he gets this message from Saint Augustine ...Obama is a visionary and he sees the big picture...what happened in SF is that the big picture was being communicating with words folks could easily demonize. Obama needs to state it more concisely like Saint Augustine.

-----------

St. Augustine once wrote: “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.”
----------

Thus, it’s virtually impossible not to ask the obvious questions: (1) are we angry about what is wrong with the country and it's disasterous policies? and (2) if we are angry, do we have the courage to change it?

The opposite of hope is cynicism, aka(bitterness) Cynicism also has two daughters, indifference and cowardice. Again, as we think about how things happen, are we sitting on the sidelines not really caring about our country and it's policies? Of course the question is only the beginning of how we might think about doing something different.

The words “hope” and “cynicism” imply a conflict of some kind. Is it that we are afraid to step up to the plate to work for positive change? Envisioning the future is never an easy process. And, for certain, turning possibilities into realities seems very uncertain. Perhaps, it is just a simple matter of getting off our duff. Rather than expecting others to make the appropriate changes, maybe we should make the effort to be better exercise our rights as citizens to vote for change.

Hope and cynicism. These two words are very powerful and timely for democracy and our government. Some of us have a vision and “hope” for something better for our nation.

This has always been Obama's message, he however was answering a specific question and providing talking points to a volunteer in SF, as to how he was doing in the polls was more a result of failed policies that create fear and doubt which cause the electorate to vote for divisive wedge issues that center on guns, immigration, race and religion.

Obama simply needs to get hold of his message and he can make Hillary look stupid once again.

Only a stupid person would not be angry and bitter at the present state of the economy and loss of jobs and wages. However, people have to start voting for hope and change and not be conned into the divisive politics of social values that pitt us against one another and only allow the special interests to continue to run our government as we give up due to cynicism.

Nothing elitist in the message at all.

Obama needs to hit back and hit back HARD.

I'm more concerned with those Dickens twins:

Ignorance and Want.

``They are Man's,'' said the Spirit, looking down upon them. ``And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!'' cried the Spirit, stretching out its hand towards the city. ``Slander those who tell it ye! Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse! And bide the end!'' ``Have they no refuge or resource?'' cried Scrooge. ``Are there no prisons?'' said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. ``Are there no workhouses?''

Is this the same Clinton campaign that publicly ridiculed and dismissed the relevance of small-town American states

You can't possibly be serious.

Hillary never said that the people who vote for her are defective. But that was EXACTLY the point of Obama's comments.

Too many people are focusing on the word "bitter." That's not where the problem lies with Obama's SF comments. Many people are bitter. The problem is Obama's using the people's bitterness as a way of explaining his difficulty in getting their votes.

In other words, he's refused to take responsibility for his own performance in rural areas. He's blaming the people of small-town Pennsylvania for his fortunes there. It's not, according to Obama's explanation, that the people think he's out of step with their values; it's not that people simply prefer his competitors' policy proposals, it's that people are so bitter that they're drawn to irrational outlets like guns and God and away from the perfectly rational Truth of his Message.

So what would you have him come out and say: "A certain percentage of these folks will never, ever vote for a black man"? Put his words back in context, take a deep breath. Think: more Demosthenes, less Eratosthenes.

So what would you have him come out and say

It doesn't really matter whether Obama blames the people's racism or their faith-centered irrationality. It's really the same condescending position: the people in those areas won't vote for me because there's something wrong with them.

There's a gross and obvious inconsistency between the "only big states matter and those dumb red states don't" (what Kos memorably termed Hillary's "insult 40 states strategy") and hitting Obama so hard over "bitter."

"Bitter" will pick her up in West Virginia and Kentucky, which are not winnable this year for Democrats. "Bitter" hasn't touched PA, according to Quinnipiac's lead pollster. Ironically, she's now chasing the types of votes that eluded her in February, so now the red state voter is a noble paradigm of what's right, at least on this day of the week, until 3 o'clock, or until her pollsters and Howard Wolfson decide otherwise.

Feh.

He's not refusing to take responsibility for his own performance - he's pointing out that voters have not been given reason by candidates of either party to think that their economic interests of any concern, or that anything will change in their lives because they vote one way or another. This is why people all across the economic spectrum and urban/rural "divide" are skeptical of his message.

Good work workerbee and I hope all those that repeat this lie will think again when sending out messages without researching them first.
I constantly have to battle the words spewed from the rights talking points which are sent to me via my Grandfather, a lifelong Texas Republican. However many of those who you catch, do not want to see the light!

Question everything!

That's very nice.

I TRY not to be offensive, but I have that dang Cuban temper.....

Well, that explains so much!

Awesome post! I was unaware that Bill Clinton had a hand in media consolidation. That is an alarming trend. Without a free press we are not a free society. Fortunately we have the independent blog sites, just so long as they don't get bought out by large media outlets. If Ms. Huffington sells the Huffington Post I wonder who she would sell it to.
(there have been rumors of her looking into valuation of her site http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/03/huffington-post.html)
