Hillary did it! She reunited my family. What about you?

avatar

For almost eight years my husband and I have not been able to discuss politics with his conservative family but my how things have changed!  We can now freely discuss and agree(!) on our mutual dislike of Hillary as a candidate since Super Tuesday, her tactics, and her growing lack of trustworthiness. Amazingly they are also open to hearing our opinions about Obama despite thriving on a steady digest of FOX news.
I know one family is not necessarily emblematic as to what is happening across this country but I have other friends who have similar tales. None, however, have stories in reverse where there is a reunion over a mutual dislike of Obama and a coming together for Hillary.
So I am asking the question: is this happening in your family?

Comments (29)

Sadly, no. My grandparents are independent FOX News watchers. At the beginning, I asked them who they were supporting, and I got one answer: NOT HILLARY (caps for the vocal emphasis they gave). They recently called my mom, and they were going on now about the only thing worse than Clinton in the White House would be Obama there. My other grandmother is a firm Clinton supporter, and says she has to vote for someone who will leave Israel on the map as her reason for why she refused to vote for Obama (earlier, I'd had to disabuse her of the "He's a Muslim!" rumor). -.- Unlike my grandparents on the other side, though, she usually votes Democratic, so I'm a little concerned. But she won't listen when I try to show her all the things that indicate that Israel is safe with Obama. -o- Sorry - not as encouraging here.

ACTUALLY DIVORCE AND ORPHAN RATES ARE WAY UP

Until Barry's San Francisco GaffOff AmeriKKKans had no awarness of their bitter desperation. So they just said screw it and split.

VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE
NOT YOUR GUILTY CONSCIENCE

This post has 23 recommends. The Maria Gomez post about MOyers has 34 and is not recommended. Why?

Unfortunately, my nephew told me years ago that (after I had supported him through his turbulent teen years) he could no longer talk to me because I had made negative comments about George Bush.

Yes, the Bush regime has gotten its messgage out: Disagree with us and you are the enemy.

That is why is respect Barack Obama. He has a new message. I hope it's not too late, and I hope he lives to tell it!

o_o ...WOW. That's what I call a tough situation.

My dad voted for Bush twice.

My Mom Gore and then Bush (weird, huh? she really hated Kerry)

Sisters, Gore and Kerry.
Me, Gore and Kerry.

All now not just voting Obama, but campaigning for him.

Hell yeah.

It is absolutely happening in our family and with old Republican friends we have never been able to discuss politics with. I believe it is happening all over this country. The Clintons are uniting people in ways we never dreamed possible -- just not in the way the Clintons had in mind.

My grandmother is a Russian Jewish woman who immigrated to the US on refugee status in her mid-60's (she's still getting used to English). She just recently got her citizenship and so was able to vote in the primary. My step-mom was talking to her after Super Tuesday about who she voted for (my family lives in CA) and she said, "Because you, Liza, and Mitya (my dad) were all talking about Obama I voted for him. You convince me".
When my step-mom told me that, I was so happy! But then she said that my grandma went on to ask, "But I heard that he may be a secret muslim. Is this true?" My mom said it of course wasn't, and then my grandma just let out this HUGE sigh.
Sad. But family ties man. That's what does it. I think (for at least some family members) stupid fear-mongering-racist issues like that can totally be overcome.
I love my grandma:)

I don't know where my family is at in this race because I do *not* talk politics with them. They're hardcore Republicans, and my dad once said we'd be out of the will if we voted for a Democrat. (Of course, my dad also threatens to throw us out of the will when we cost him points in card games, so I'm not terribly worried about the threat.)

So, it's sad, I realize, but I'm not asking them about it. If they bring it up fine, but I'd rather talk about the weather.

Yes.

My cousin and his family are strongly pro-life but have soured on the GOP through the last 8 years. He voted for Kerry in 04 but his family did not. Now he's strongly for Obama and his winning over some family members for O as well.

Everyone in my immediate family is voting for Obama - wheras eight years ago our votes were going in three different directions.

My parents are both working class white folks...

And they are both supporters of Barack Obama!

We started out with my father and I supporting Obama, and my mother supporting Clinton.

But mom has become disgusted by Clinton's tactics.. and has now come over from the dark side.

We are a family united in our support of Barack Obama... the next President of the United States.

My entire family hates Hillary. The only time I've ever heard my wife call anyone a c*nt was once when Hillary was on television, grinning that phony grin while she lied about something or other.

My Dad changes the channel whenever Hillary is on. My Mom's worried sick that Hillary might get the nomination. I have to keep reassuring her that it's not going to happen.

I only know one person who likes Hillary. She lives across the street from us, and she's the most politically ignorant human being I know. She can't tell me a single reason why she prefers Hillary. She just keeps saying, "I don't think Barack is experienced enough." Duh.

avatar

Mine as well. Haven't been able to talk Politics with my family for 30 years. Now, with Hillary we are able to totally agree that she is the best Candidate in the race and the only one that knows what needs to be done to help this country!

Clinton '08

My father, a fairly conservative fellow, is 'fed up' with the republicans. He's very interested in obama. My wife, a conservative too, detests Hillary and would probably vote for obama.

The only time i've heard my wife use the word c*nt was after HRC win in PA. My jaw dropped. Not even I can elicit a reaction like that.

FWIW.

It's calmed things down in my household in that it's gotten us to stop talking politics. I'm for Obama, my wife's for Clinton. But she's been so demoralized by Clinton's campaign that she just can't find the energy for an argument anymore. Although she still can't bring herself to turn against Hil, she's quietly looking forward to Obama's victory, at which point I know she'll come around and we can present a united front against McCain.

We are 3-1 Obama in our home. My oldest daughter is pro-hilLIARy, although she can't tell me why.

AP/Ipsos: Hillary Performing Better Than Obama Against McCain

Apparently, what is happening in your family isn't happening everywhere.

My youngest brother voted for Nader in 2000. He voted for Obama. My older brother voted for Bush in 2004. He voted for Obama. My mother, who is 78 and racist by virtue of her age and upbringing, voted for Obama. I have always been the bleeding heart liberal that they have all loved to tease. I am happy that we can all agree on something for a change.

Here's my family story, but it's more about how Wright took away their positiv feelings for Obama...until now.

My father came around after seeing the repeat of Bill Moyers Wright interview on Sunday. I didn't eve bother calling to tell him to watch, becuase I didn't think it would matter.

It did!

HE said it's "not the same guy from those clips."

He also saw the Press corp thing this morning and while he didn't "love" his loud 'style', he certainly said he was commanding and smart and very much a stage presence, though he did feel Wright was certainly not worried about Obama, he was there for himself. Not that he blamed him

Nevertheless, he no longer holds Wright against Obama.

Well, yes and no. We agree that we dislike Clinton, and like Obama. The problem is that as soon as the media runs footage of her, our libido is severely damaged for the night. Listening to HRC is as bad as listening to Bush - like finger nails on the chalk board. We're trying to have another child, my wife's biological clock is ticking, and we simply can't afford 4 years of Clinton's screeching.

I'm curious -- what did your family think of Obama's appearance on Fox? (Or did they catch it all?)

avatar

Nice story. One comment i can say "whatever". Obama is losing anyway.

Agreed. Obama has totally lost it.

If I may use a sports analogy: Hillary has finished her 18 rounds and is in the clubhouse with a strong lead that is basically insurmountable.

She has fewer delegates, fewer voters, less money, and fewer states won. In golf, the person with the smallest number is the winner and you simple can't argue with golf math.

We are Asian and such a big family. The family composed of my mom, her fiancee, 5 sisters, 4 brothers-in-law, 3 brothers, 2 nephew, 1 niece. You what nobody will vote for Obama. 3 for McCain if Clinton will be the nominee and all will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee. We are all from CA. And most Asians will do that as well. How attractive is your Obama can be?

avatar

of course, we are all voting for obama and if hrc steals this, we will just all stay home and pray that white rural america, hrc's newest flavor of the week, pulls her out of the losers corner.

just a little bit of hope and change is all i have for hrc should she manage to steal this from the candidate who has worked hard to earn each vote. let's not forget that obama was an unknown, no brand name recognition, no big wigs in his pocket, no ex-prez as a surrogate and to make matters worse he has a funny sounding name and he is of the wrong color. against all odds, he followed the rules and still beat the crap out of miss inevitable fair and square. to have it all taken away by the "white powers" is nothing short of the gravest travesty towards democracy...

if tables were turned, obama would have been shown the door a long time ago. i guess we all have to play the cards we are dealt. if some feel that obama's color is a boon, then i challenge them by saying hrc's color, gender and her connections are more so the BOON!

yes, my family is now united and grandma and mommy are on the obama train and no longer on the hrc express freight to bigotry. by the way, i am biracial and grandma is lily white, so i am not just some black-loving obamacrat. i identify with both races. i am sure that non-issue matters to some of you more so than my original thought.

of course, we are all voting for obama and if hrc steals this, we will just all stay home and pray that white rural america, hrc's newest flavor of the week, pulls her out of the losers corner.

Add to this a low black turnout. Hillary can't beat McCain if she steals it. How does she win Pa. Ohio and Florida? Not a chance.

avatar

How does she win Pa. Ohio and Florida?

Pulling away. And Obama loses all three.

And your post made me wonder. How does she "steal it" if Obama has 2025? Did he get 2025 and I just haven't heard about it?

avatar

Vidii,

Just curious, why is your family so anti-Obama? I honestly want to know.

This is the third time I've seen Scientology advertising near a pro-Obama anti-Clinton post.
