Having Heard Nothing About the Debate, It's Obvious That Obama Won

avatar

Actually, I skimmed a few pieces that included some quotes, and that brief exposure also sold me. But my main point here is that Obama is easily the better thinker and more effective speaker. That's been proven many times. Everybody makes gaffes unless their completely canned, and candidates do more and less well from appearance to appearance. But there's no argument concerning his ability to out-think and out-talk Hillary and any other presidential candidate who's been in the race. Am I swooning. Nah! I do this kind of evaluation of intellectual and speaking ability for a living,  and there really is just no comparison.

??? When he's giving speeches certainly. But in an interview/debate context? I never get that sense in debates. So many `ums` - clear instances of him gathering thought - makes him seem hesitant. Whereas Clinton really flows in the debate context - speaks so crisply, knows exactly what she wants to say.
(This from an Obama fan and Clinton nowadays loather.)
"I do this kind of evaluation of intellectual and speaking ability for a living"
Which has me really interested to know how you come to this evaluation given the `ums` -v- the crisp, flowing delivery.

I agree. I'm a fan of Obama, but I don't think he does debates well. I've heard that people who act like he does in these situations are, as you say, gathering thought. But I would add that it's trying to gather thought from a racing mind. So much going on in there, he has to slow it down and find what he's looking for. Who knows? In any case, I do agree with you. And I'll add that I'm extremely disappointed in the so-called "debate." I tuned in expecting a whopper of a debate considering the close race in PA, but what I found was a circus sideshow instead. Shame on ABC News.

I would just like to say that, using "um's", especially the way that Obama does, is in no way a bad thing. It shows that he is "thinking" just like you said.
And thinking BEFORE you talk is a GREAT thing. Not enough people do it.

Not thinking before he speaks is what got him in trouble in San Francisco before the explanations and everything.
Now if he was "umming" and pausing during a speech, THATS terrible.
But during a live debate? No not at all. I dont think he over did that at all and I watched his and hers body language through out the debate.

On the same note, Hillary didnt do that either. I think she gives good answers, maybe even better, when its live and in her face. Her problem is she doesnt think things through before speaking. She doesnt take the ENTIRE circumference into thought.

And Obama does. He knows how dumb it is to give specifics, when he doesnt, and isnt in a position to yet, know a specific. And she sometimes just runs with it, as if she sat at home the night before thinking of that answer the whole nigh but in reality, shes just trying to give a good answer.
Id rather the individual who thinks and realizes he may not have the best answer yet, than the twit who tries to think and tries to give a good answer.
THAT shows inexperience.

imo
