Give ABC a piece of your mind

Any person who has a remote concern how corporate media are gift wrapping the presidency to Republican will agree the philly debate was the ugliest and most dangerous display of corporate whorehood.

Kos is urging people to call ABC., not once or twice but as many times as you can.

BHO supporters are such a whiney bunch. HRC has had to face overwhelmingly unfair treatment this entire campaign season from the likes of CNN and MSNBC. The problem is that the obamatrons are so used to kid gloves treatment of their cult leader, that they have forgotten what objective news media sounds like.

avatar

Wow. Twisted beyond belief.

"Objective" would have meant questions about Mark Penn's involvement with Colombia and Blackwater. Bill Clinton's making $800,000 shilling for trade deals. And shilling for Dubai.

Ayers is "objective", as if Obama is a member of the Underground, which hasn't existed for 40 years? Ayers -- A Professor of Education at the University of Illinois-Chicago, his wife the head of the Children's Rights Clinic at Northwestern University. A major advocate for children. They have devoted their lives to charity work, focusing on children, poverty, education.

Bill Clinton pardoned members of the Underground who were actually convicted.

Your candidate got a free pass tonight. And if you think there isn't dirt that the Republicans will use against her, you're truly delusional. Vetted -- yeah, right. There's a reason they want her to be the candidate.

BHO should have been asked why he lied about not ever meeting Nadhmi Auchi, whose money Rezko used to help his little buddy buy his own house and adjacent lot. Auchi has been convicted of corruption in France and has ties to such lovely figures as former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Rezko is BHO's slumlord buddy currently on trial for political corruption as well.

BHO should have been asked about why he hasn't released his tax returns from the years he was an Illinois state senator. And if he's not willing to, if that makes him an enormous hypocrite.

Now, THOSE would have been fair questions.

Please. Michelle and Barack bought their house with their own money - Rezko didn't buy them a house. They also bought a slice of the lot next door from Mrs. Rezko to make their yard bigger. It was a piece of a single family lot and they also paid their own money for it.

From the "How to argue like a right winger playbook"

2. The Gish Gallop.

What Is It?
This tactic, named after notorious professional creationist debater Duane Gish, is also known as the "fling shit at the wall and see what sticks" technique. People using it spew out as many premises in their argument as they can, combining fact, lies, bullshit, and opinion in a non-stop avalanche. A really good example of this tactic is here, where you see a right-winger construct a strawman (we'll get to that) composed of no fewer than six beliefs and then refer to it as one belief.

Where Do People Use It?
This one occurs most frequently in evolution/creationism debates, but it does occasionally come up in political debates. Denialists of all stripes also seem to be fond of using it.

What Does It Do?
Essentially, it's a form of "tinfoiling the radar," making it impossible for your opponent to refute your argument because it takes ten times as long to unpack and refute (every single point) than it does to argue in the first place. It's also a great favourite of RW debaters in public fora, because it allows the RW in question to dazzle the audience with bullshit.

How to Combat It
This is one where you can't really combat it effectively once the RW doing it has the bit between their teeth and has started to run away with the discourse. You can really only combat a Gish Gallop effectively by forcing the RW to stop after each point and refuting the points one at a time. Countering it in a written medium is a little easier, because you can pick apart each claim.

http://theinterroblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-to-argue-like-right-winger.html
Learn more. We have to be more efficient in the future to fight the Right Wing (and Hillary)

As an afterthought - I think we really should do on the blogs as I did above.

Whenever we come across a nonsensical comment, be it from Hillary's campaign or the McCain campaign in the future, we should copy and paste as a response the correlating argument.

I only listed #2 in response above. There are 6 in the link I provided. I pretty much covers absolutely every argument I've heard from Hillary supporters so far.

avatar

If you're going to quote my stuff, will you please at least make sure the tactic you're highlighting is actually one the person is using? Hillary Clinton is not engaging in a Gish Gallop -- not enough lies, deceptions and distortions per square millimetre. Maybe the example I used was a bit deceptive, but you will notice it was six premises in two lines. Most Gish Gallops go on for pages at a time, like the email here.

For what it's worth, just this once, I'm glad I can't vote in the US elections, because I'd really have to hold my nose to vote for either of them at this point. I mean, wow, I'd get to vote for a cynical manipulator who's way too far to the right for me, or a fauxgressive who has enormous sexism and homophobia issues and can't shut up about religion for longer than a minute at a time. Greeeaaaat...

Oh I am sorry. You see, I really liked your blog and I thought is was wonderful and full of wisdom. Especially useful against the RW here in the US. Unlike most bloggers, you seem to have a problem with someone attempting to expand a greater audience for your post. That is a bewildering stance...but OK.

Hillary's campaign is textbook RW. I believed your blogpost would help current progressives break through the spin. As the author of the blog I referenced, you should know that people respond to an article that resonates with them. Just because you meant the Gish Gallop in a certain context does not mean that others could not apply it to other circumstances. You yourself referenced that these tactics are used in polical debates. So I ask you - What is your problem again?

If you're going to quote my stuff, will you please at least make sure the tactic you're highlighting is actually one the person is using? Hillary Clinton is not engaging in a Gish Gallop -- not enough lies, deceptions and distortions per square millimetre.

Oh by the way, I was not referring to Hillary Clinton personally, but the commenter ryotsu I was responding to - you know, like you suggested in your article - commenters on blogs

His comment was:

BHO should have been asked why he lied about not ever meeting Nadhmi Auchi, whose money Rezko used to help his little buddy buy his own house and adjacent lot. Auchi has been convicted of corruption in France and has ties to such lovely figures as former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Rezko is BHO's slumlord buddy currently on trial for political corruption as well.

That seems to be exactly like your description for the Gish Gallop.

BHO should have been asked about why he hasn't released his tax returns from the years he was an Illinois state senator. And if he's not willing to, if that makes him an enormous hypocrite.

avatar

Oh my God, I think I just figured out the true significance of the whole Rezko issue! Barack Obama...is Saddam Hussein! No wonder people think he's Muslim.

HRC has gotten everything she deserves, nothing less and nothing more.

avatar

Yep! All the way to Bosnia!

You can also visit this link to register your feelings.

They have a "registration" process, but it's not very tight. As this 95 year old guy named Ozzy Jones from Beverly Hills can testify to.

I just called, they gave me another # to call, and then when I called that the automated voice told me to press 1, 2, 3 for primetime, sports, whatever, and then when I pressed one of these #s nothing happened.

Big bunch of nothing. But at least the one woman I talked to said that she had been getting lots of calls.

UPDATE

Use this number: (818) 460-7477, if you cannot reach the (212) no. posted above.

Also, I'm shamelessly asking you to recommend this, so that it stays on the top for the next couple of days.

And donate. Don't forget to donate.

avatar

Something else everyone can do. If you too are getting emails from the DNC asking for donations to combat the Republicans trying to `tear Hillary and Obama down` reply to them that they're not going to get one cent of your moola until they intervene to stop Hillary's GOP style `tearing down` of Obama!

I already did. Every single time the DNC sends a "we need money to combat McCain" email. I send them a nastygram pointing out all of the similar aspects of McCain and Hillary. Then I repeat back to them the Democratic "what we stand for" from their front page. Then I tell them only Obama embodies the Democratic premise and will not give a dime until they stop this nonsense. Only having a definate nominee will be the best defense against McCain, not more money to the DNC.

I posted this elsewhere but I'm so angry I can't stop this rant. We've got to speak out against this type of politics, the ultimate victim is the country.

If someone is out to destroy ANY public person, they can go through the contents of THEIR ENTIRE LIFE from kindergarten to dredge up at least a few hundred details, a childhood friend who is now a felon, etc., to beat them relentlessly with. This is surely DISGUSTING to anyone with the faintest idea of fairness and justice, and a new form of the Salem Witch Hunt and McCarthyism.

Of course Hillary can't prove Obama's guilt-by-association, that's NOT the point for her. Her aim, like her supporters', is to REPEAT OVER AND OVER UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS, to saturate the media and blogosphere with this TOXIC GARBAGE, so that people who have no time to pay any attention will just make the MENTAL WORD ASSOCIATION - Obama, Muslims, Hussein, Terrorists, 9/11, Angry Black Guy, Wright, FlagPin. Another set of words - Elite Snob, Empty Suit, False Hope, Rezko, JUST TO TAKE THE GUY DOWN.

It is NOTHING to do with Reason or Truth, Obama's innocence or guilt - it is SLANDER to plant tiny seeds of doubt in voters' minds and it works, boy, it works, as we have witnessed with Gore and Kerry,.

Hillary supporters are intelligent enough to know how abomninable this TACTIC is, what this has COST the country, and that Hillary is throwing the door wide open to this "Politics of Personal Destruction" for the election season when the Repubs are going to use the same tactics to PERVERT the political process against the eventual nominee, yet they can HOLD BACK THEIR CONSCIENCE to justify this.

Yes, IT WILL WORK. UNLESS US ANGRY DEMS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. It is much easier to destroy than to rebuild trust in Obama and future honest politicians who refuse to stoop to this garbage. it is much easier to tar and make these unfounded word associations in peoples' mind than to undo the damage.

And this dirty politics ultimately hurts the country, as this is a weapon of the politically corrupt. Our political process is corrupt beyond our comprehension at the hands of BOTH parties, and we all sit helplessly typing into our blogs.

I want us to somehow organize something, perhaps a March, a Concert, a publicity event, to "Stop the War on Our Political Process", to ensure that we get a clean election.

I want the message out about these political tactics, that it is unacceptable for either party to engage in. This isn't about Freedom of Speech, as libel, slander, crying "Fire!" in a crowded theatre are not protected under its tenets.

For too long, our corrupt officials have got away with this SH*T with no repercussions, no backlash from the equally corrupt media - it only emboldens them, witness the case of Singleton!

My question to you is What Are You Going To Do About This?

Ugh, sorry for the mixed-up/typo, I meant "Siegelman" of course, not "Singleton".

Classic McCarthy attacks reinforce Clinton's image as unprincipled and sleazy. Nothing matters except bringing Obama down. If the super delegate overturn the primary in favor of Clinton, the democratic party will not recover for decades.

C'mon kids, they're puttin' on a civil rights march on ABC headquarters over at Kos (not against NBC though cuz they just play gotcha on Clinton)! Now that the shoes on the other foot and Obama is the one being grilled, the audacity of the tabloid media is oh so appalling (full attacks of the vapors coming on). The naive hypocrisy is almost embarrassing. Of course, ABC behaved poorly tonight. Of course, they went for the dirt and RW talking points. Of course, they threw down hardest on Obama, the frontrunner and threat to McCain. If that surprises you at all, you haven't been paying attention.

If you look at tonight's debate, though, you'll see that both candidates were entrapped. Obama with the association questions and Clinton with the "she'll ply Republican smears" trap. ABC has been playing this same game for six months now, but Clinton and Edwards before that took the brunt of the scandalizing. Nothing new or out of the ordinary happened tonight.

Nothing new or out of the ordinary happened?

Does that somehow EXCUSE this crap?

I've watched over half of the democratic debates (yes, I'm a glutton) and I can not recall a single debate where so much time was wasted on meaningless garbage as this charade of a "debate" hosted by ABC.

No, there is no excuse for this kind of crap. But this has been going on the whole campaign. This is pretty much how our vaunted press covers elections. If ABC was acting like Fox what has (MS)NBC, CNN and others been acting like? Recall Tim Russert's or Wolf Blitzer's or Chris Matthews' gotcha journalism. It's important to let the media know that this is unacceptable. But when it is selectively applied (it's unacceptable because our guy got hit) they get a different message (more like "lay off our guy"). This was just a debate. The tabloid inquest will go on in the media in spite of protests by a crowd suddenly riled that their candidate was on the hot seat.

No, there is no excuse for this kind of crap.

OK, so your avatar (and my desire to be contrary) has inspired me to give such an excuse:
Stupidity can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, ABC was attempting to channel as much stupidity as possible to prevent it from being in places where it does not belong. This selfless act prevented it from creeping into truly dangerous areas such as nuclear power plants, airplane cockpits, and other heavy machinery. Think of the children!

To be more accurate, this has been going on since the before founding of the Republic. Today it just happens to be ABC whoring themselves out.

Do you mean to somehow deflect from ABC by pointing out prior misdeeds committed by other networks? Because if you do, I recommend you find a 1st grader to compose your posts while you go out and attempt something slightly more productive.

This is corporate media, everyone. And it just might have done tonight what people thought nobody could do at this point: Unite the Democrats.

avatar

If there is anytime to starve the trolls, it's now.

Don't bother with them.

Good advice gathered on teh innerwebs:

Concentrate on ABC, local affilliates and their sponsors and oh yeah,,,

Pay special attention to Disneyland.

avatar

All this outrage over ABC from Obama supporters! Look how they ganged up on Hillary at the previous debate on MSNBC. It was three against one. They didn't even let her have an opening statement. They threw only one tough question to Obama, and that was at the end of the debate. And yet she came out of it on top. Tonight's debate was very civilized. Blame Obama for his poor performance tonight, not ABC. Your pity doesn't make Obama look good. ABC will simply release a statement that a number of complaints were received from Obama supporters who felt the debate was unfair, and they will defend themselves by demonstrating how fair it was. Any outcry from Obama supporters will just draw more attention to Obama's poor performance. And keep in mind that tonight's debate is nothing compared to what the eventual nominee will face from the GOP. If you want to phone someone, phone a superdelegate and tell them you no longer think Obama is up to the task.

avatar

Was this before or after her forays into Bosnia?

God Bless ABC for not being NBC or MSNBC (Tweety, Olbertwit, Fat Timmy, David Pimp Shuster, plagerists Kerns Goodwin and Mike Barnicle, etc.). MSNBC is the "Official Obama Cable News Network." Obama and his minions need to shut up, suck it up, and Barry Obama needs to grow a pair. His wife has a few to spare.

Barry Obama lost the debate, hands down, plained sucked. What else would you expect from an empty suit?

Yeah, ABC really hammered away with Republican right wing talking points. Should make any Dem happy!

If I was a Hillary supporter, I'd be pissed too.

Of all the things said in the debate last night, the only thing I heard on NPR and Today was:

"Clinton says Obama can beat McCain."

"Yes, yes, yes." - Clinton

Gotta love the modern media. /snark

avatar

Funny, but the overnight polls indicated Obama won. Thanks for making up a boldface lie though. You reflect your candidate Hillary, apparently. BTW, who taught you that lying was good, seriously?

ABC = "Audicity" Broadcasting Corp

O_O Wow, he was right!

God that was embarrassing - for ABC. We've had recent releases of information about torture, we've had Congressional hearings on the current status in Iraq, the economic news is getting worse by the day, and a lot of other issues that impact us, the voters. Did we get thoughtful, probing questions to help us find out what the candidates thought of this, and what their proposed solutions would be? NO! We got a rehash of every minor, beaten-to-death talking head point from the past two months.

Please let this be the last debate! I don't know if I want to find out just how much more inane it can get!

Complain for all you are worth.

That was without a doubt the most sickening thing ever on TV.

The only compensation is that no one watched it. It was the 26th debate. Dallas was watching the Mavs beat New Orleans. There were several baseball games broadcast last night, too.

It was unforgivable, but it didn't hurt Obama and it didn't help Hillary-Joe at all.

avatar

It's not a matter of whether bias has been against Hillary in the past (I don't think it was). It's a matter of the rediculous nature of the questions asked of Barack, of his weakness in defense, that makes Obama supporters angry.

ABC asked questions that had no relevance, and ONLY questioned Obama- in other words, ABC did not abuse everyone equally. What I'm angry about is not (mainly) the bias against Barack, it's that, even as he still tries to be honest and classy, this pathetic debate goes on. If Obama is to be questioned about things like that, let him also be attacked on Rezko, and let Hillary be attacked for the plethora of lies in her campaign.

Or, ABC could try and run a fair debate in which nonissues like this don't come up.

For Me, Barack Obama won. He won because, even under attack, he was able to challenge my beliefs, and make me think. The moment when he reiterated his "clinging" argument, I was impressed. I hadn't expected to get a new idea from a politician, ever; and even though I still don't know what I think of it, I'm behind him 100%

Oh, and save a little outrage for the contemptible Nedra Pickler. Apparently her analysis of the debate: Obama Attacks!

http://www.rawstory.com/news/mochila/Analysis_Obama_wants_voters_to_reme_04172008.html

Thank ABC News for asking legit questions.

Can't Obama supporters just suck it up and get ready for this all the way until the end. Barry O, the Empty Suit is running for POTUS and he won't always have MSNBC to do a hatchet job in a debate on Clinton. MSNBC: Natural Blonde Tweety, Crazy Oblbertwit, Pimp Schuster, Mika whatever her name and by the way my father worked for Carter (oh...), Eugene "Marx" Robinson, Mike "plagiarism 101" Barnacle, I need to go on a diet Russert and the rest of the Obama wet their outfits NBC/MSNBC on-air lovers.

Kashy, I've just sent a registered letter to ABC and will call them as well.

My wife and I have a baby daughter and graduate school tuition to pay. We are worried that because of the downturn in the economy, my wife might lose her job. We are unsure how we will be able to afford to move once our one-bedroom apartment becomes too small for us.

Thankfully, ABC asked tough questions about flag pins. Because that's what keeps me up at night.

Folks

Thanks for keeping the post alive. Battling against fringe idiots like Marginal Player or Mathew Weaver or Roytsu within our comfort zone @ TPM will not make any difference.

There is one clear difference between Obama supporters and other supporter this seasonn. Obama supporters- organize and act.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Call or email ABC and the local affiliate in your area- and share your effort with us.

2. Donate to Obama, DNC or PBS

3. Also, please let's discuss how democrats can mitigate corporate media smearing in the General.

Should all presidential debates occur on public television?

Give debates back to the League of Women Voters. Those who are in it for profit should never be allowed to conduct them.

It took 50 minutes of what was supposed to be a 90 minute debate to get to a discussion of a real issue affecting all Americans, the war in Iraq. That some Hillary supporters find this to be a good thing is a sign of staggering desperation. None of us on the left were well-served by what took place last night. None of us who care about the future of this country were well served.

of his weakness in defense, that makes Obama supporters angry.

Please do not speak for me because you are dead wrong here. I'm furious because it was a Right Wing hit job for which there is no excuse.

I don't care how Obama did - that was not a debate.

Tena, you're right, it was not a debate, it was more like an episode of Punk'd. Wrote a snark attack on the debate, wanted to share it.

Don't forget Brian Ross, the sleaze meister who made that slice and dice video hatchet job on Rev. Wright, which, it turns out, included *quoted material*. No doubt the ABC smear video was tipped off by Penn & Co.

ABC is pure sleaze.

I've called that number and another I saw at Drum's site numerous times this am. The receptionist shunts me to a voicemail msg that gave me a long litany of choices (learn about digital boxes!, call ABC Sports at this number) but does say they'll give me 30 seconds to leave a comment about ABC programing. So I waited each time to the end of their speil when it just disconnects. It's better to just say your piece
to Kim, or Wanda or whoever answers.

Let us remember that Kim and Wanda are innocent bystanders and very likely members of the same middle class Future President Obama is fighting for. Sure, it's their job to pick up the phone. But be nice to them. They are likely having a day from hell.

I assume ABC has not only apologized, it has fired both George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson. If not, keep trying, how dare they question Saint Barack and his relationship with a terrorist and Reverend Wright!

avatar

If you think that debate did any service to Clinton you are a fool! The problem with the debate was how it made democrats look - it accentuated Hillary's negatives, it did her no favors and it accomplished nothing but maybe making people who don't like Obama feel good. Won't help get any democrat in office - that is for sure.

If you feel like going to the top, here's the boss of Disney and thus ABC.

Robert Iger Disney CEO (robert.a.iger@disney.com)

I see Clintonites call us-who supporters Obama- "CRY BABIES", ok. fine.
My problem : this was a hit job on the democratic party. the Questions were framed by the right-wing attack machine period.
We don't have to sit here take it, we shouldn't.

I agree. All Dems should be outraged.

Top Ratings for Pennsylvania Debate

By Brian Stelter

More than 10 million viewers tuned into Wednesday’s Democratic debate on ABC, making it the most-watched debate of the primary election season.

The debate, the first to air on a weeknight on a broadcast network, attracted an average of 10.7 million viewers between 8 and 10 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research.

Viewership of the debate peaked between 8:30 and 9 p.m. with 11.8 million viewers, topping the “reality” fare of “Deal or No Deal” on NBC and “Big Brother” on CBS. The broadcast faced stiffer competition at 9 p.m. when “American Idol” appeared on Fox and netted 22.7 million viewers. Still, ABC averaged over 10 million viewers in the second hour of the debate.

The presidential candidate debates have repeatedly broken viewership records during the hotly contested primary season. The bar was previously set in January when a Saturday night debate shown on ABC averaged 9.4 million viewers. CNN attracted almost as many viewers (8.3 million) for another Democratic debate in January.

I'm sure ABC News will fire the 2 bad guys yet. yes we can, change, hope, etc.

Calm down, Obamatons. Mathematical impossibility still means Mathematical impossibility, regardless of Stephanopoulos' whorishness, or Clinton's "resolve."

Americans don't want this dumb-ed down, pandering. After 8 years of living intimately with the maestros of bullsh!tting, GWB and Rove, Hillary and Wolfsan’s' antics pack all the punch of a campaign for high school student body president.

IMHO, if this is to be effective at turning mass sections of the American electorate off on an Obama Presidency, the Clinton campaign is clearly going to need to up the ante on salacious gossip of the flimsy guilt-by-association kind. Farrakhan, Rezko, Rev. Wright - are all good attempts. But after Bush 1, Bush 2 and Bill Clinton, tenuous links to middle eastern operatives, suspected terrorists, and clandestine financiers just don't get voters all "clinging bitterly to shit" like it used to.

avatar

The suggestion is that Ayers influences Obama because he ehald a fundraiser for his state senate campaign that raised less than $20,000. Then what influence do you think $800,000 from Columbian free trade associations to Bill Clinton have on Hillary? Is that part of the money she loaned her campaign back in February? What influence do the millions contributed to the Clinton Library or Clinton Foundation have? Doesn't Hillary owe something to Saudi Arabia and Dubai for all their thoughtful contributions to her husband's legacy?

The suggestion is that Obama couldn't sit through sermons the past 20 years without in some way feeling sympathies to Reverend Wrights' animosities. Does that mean that Hillary has to adhere to her husband's free trade convictions because they have shared a bed for 30 years? Clinton says you can't choose your family, but a 50% divorce rate says she can(unless you are cravenly ambitious and your husband is a former president).

avatar

Be sure to sob when you tell ABC how unfair they were to little Barry.

avatar

I am the only one who saw George Stephanopolous being interviewed on leaving the White House? He related the following dialogue:

Hillary, tearfully, "I love you, George Stephanopolous."

George: "I love you too."

Has ABC fired the bad guys yet?

"There is one clear difference between Obama supporters and other supporter this seasonn [sic]. Obama supporters- organize and act." Let me know when Obama supporters get them fired. I'm waiting...

I opened a new email window, stuck my head out and YELLED

George Stephanopoulos I AM MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANY MORE

And ya know what?

I didn't feel nearly as bitter

avatar

Whine, whine, whine. Obama started hitting Hillary from 15 months back. Have you heard her whine?
Obama has called Hillary many names and laugh and belittled her as Annie Oakley (sexism). Hillary has never called Obama any name. Has she whined being called names? And she's a 2-time First Lady.
MSNBC and CNN both played gotcha on Hillary, how come you didn't complain? Did she whined about it?
You're pathetic in your blind support of a candidate who whines because he flunked the debate. He's a whiner and a sissy.

George worked for the Clintons and was busted today for taking notes from Sean Hannity concerning the Ayers story. That in itself is scary Sean I mean. Point one, ABC was desperate to have their ratings soar in comparison to the last debate between Obama and Hillary on another station. Point two, they deliberately sat down for months and decided how they would conduct this debate and deliberately, with supposedely intelligent input chose to use these unfair tactics to gain ratings and help the republican party and I personally feel as the debate was held/hosted in Pennsylvania I would not be surprised if some Hillary supporter/politicians from there gave their input on what questions to ask as well.

The American people are not that naive when it pertains to politics. The whole thing stunk pewie! of a set up.... big time!
