Economists don't like the Gas Tax Freeze Either
Obama's rejection of Clinton's and McCain's summer gas tax freeze is echoed by economists. Of course Hillary spins this into "he(Obama) doesn't care about the plight of the working class" boilerplate:

Krugman, who spends a good proportion of his editorials shilling for her, also came out against it. Without mentioning that she was for it, though. e_e

I think the difference between Clinton and McCain is that she is proposing to make up the money by taxing the windfall profits of the oil and gas companies and McCain isn't. Krugman is consistent.

Guess you missed this part of Clinton's proposal.
"We will pay for it by imposing a windfall profits tax on the big oil companies," she said on Tuesday. "They sure can afford it. This is a big difference in this race. My opponent opposes giving consumers a break from the gas tax but I believe the American people are being squeezed pretty hard."
The oil companies didn't miss it, though. Like Obama, they're opposed to it.

Who do you think will raise gas prices to offset the taxes the oil companies will then have to pay? Do you *really* think they're going to just suck it up and deal? Of course not...they'll pass it on to the consumers.

I'm no economist, but the economists said that lowering the price without increasing supply will increase demand, which will increase the price. They're saying it won't work.

So, is it your opinion that the oil companies will eat that extra cost whether than pass it on to the consumer, or do you agree that this would be a meaningless gesture that merely has the appearance of lowering taxes while in reality doing no such thing?
I think you're cynical enough to see the reality here, Billy.

Krugman's criticism of the gas tax is this:
The same is true for Clinton's plan. It would do little to help consumers, because if they are going to tax the oil companies they are going to raise prices. Nevermind that in the summer the demand for gas always goes up, thereby raising prices. I've heard McCain say he wants to replenish the highway fund from the general fund. Makes perfect sense of course - we'll just take your tax money elsewhere and built up the deficit some more.
Senator Clinton is one of the smartest candidates we've seen in recent years. She knows this. She knows the Bush White House is never going to pass a windfall tax on the oil companies. She also knows that this is why the gas tax won't happen.
Billy, I'm can't believe that you agree with the gas tax idea. Surely you must see it as political pandering? It's a horrible idea. But I've gotta give her political props for it. She has set up her proposal in a way that she knows will never happen but the blame can fall right at G. W.'s feet, and in the meantime she can bash Obama over the head with it, and it will be effective in the very circles of people who she needs to keep and he needs to win over.

I've really been setting the record for personal typos lately. My apologies.
