Bill Clinton: Rewriting History

Bill Clinton today:

“No, I think that they played the race card on me,” said Clinton, “and we now know from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it all along.”

“We were talking about South Carolina political history and this was used out of context and twisted for political purposes by the Obama campaign to try to breed resentment elsewhere. And you know, do I regret saying it? No. Do I regret that it was used that way? I certainly do. But you really got to go some to try to portray me as a racist.”

Problem is though, they weren't talking about South Carolina political history. The question that elicited the now notorious "Jesse Jackson comments" was "why does it take two clintons to beat one obama?"

David Wright: What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?

BC: [Laughs] That’s just bait, too. Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice, in ‘84 and ‘88. And he ran a good campaign, and Senator Obama's run a good campaign here. He’s run a good campaign everywhere, he’s got a, he is a good candidate, with a good organization.

The reporter might as well have asked him who he thought would win the Super Bowl, and the response would have been "Jesse Jackson." The answer was not relevant to the question asked. It seems Bill deliberately went out of his way to drop the name "Jesse Jackson" in there. And he wants to say Obama played the race card?

I know this is what Bill does. He lies and stretches the truth and bends the facts so that they slant in his favor and he looks like the victim of the big bad media or the "vast right wing conspiracy" that now supports his wife, or of the Obama campaign for merely keepign track of the insensitive (and i'm being generous with that characterization) remarks that came out of the Clinton campaign, which Obama has since apologized for.

I think one of the great tragedies of this campaign has been the fall of Bill Clinton. He's probably still enormously popluar with certain populations of people, but for those of us who have paid close attention, for those of us who have followed every second of this campaign since before Iowa, his "little white lies" have grown too numerous to be an accident or a result of sleep deprivation or of an unfortunate incident of "mis-speaking".

No. There are too many occurences, too many of his so-called "facts" that have no basis in reality or any supporting evidence at all to be merely an accident.

Bill Clinton is a liar.

There, I said it.

Of course, this is no news flash. Republicans in the 1990's knew it. But he was only lying about sex then, and they overplayed their hand in impeaching him for it.

But from the definition of the word "is" to "I did not have sexual realtions with that woman", there is a long history of Bill bending and stretching the truth.

But now, I know that Bill Clinton will lie about anything as long as it serves his interests.

And what's worse, unlike when he was an elected official, there is no one to hold him accountable anymore when he tells a bold faced lie. And precisely because he's a former president, people will give extra weight and extra thought to the lies he tells, not thinking a former President would lie to them. Especially a former president who is so well liked...

I wish, as all of us do, that we had a media that asked the tough questions and called a liar a liar when they were demonstrably lying.

If someone called Bill Clinton on his repeated "factual inaccuracies" it would make my day to see him get red-faced and start waving that finger around. Guess I'll have to keep dreaming...

"I did not raise racial relations with that man, Barack Obama."

Oh MY GOD. HE just cant stop!!

NBC/NJ: "Sir, what did you mean yesterday when you said that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?"
CLINTON: "When did I say that, and to whom did I say that?"

NBC/NJ: "On WHYY radio yesterday"

CLINTON: "No, no, no. That's not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games, and I'm not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us, and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day."

Bill Clinton yesterday:

“No, I think that they played the race card on me,” said Clinton, “and we now know from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it all along.”

I feel bad for Monica Lewinsky.

Heh. I posted this comment here

I'd rather believe that Bill sold his soul to her over Monica Lewinsky. Just speculate with me a moment here. Bill took one look at Hillary's mean face and, confronted with the prospect of as public and rancorous a divorce as HRC could muster, decided to roll over. He signed on to her plans, whatever they were, where'er they might lead; he swore eternal fealty. He said "Uncle."

He'd rather surrender his integrity and lie up front to this questioner than be subjected to her noble, public, feminine scorn. She actually COULD say TERRIBLE things about him; she wouldn't have to scrabble at straws like "bitter" and "cling," she could actually make hay on WJC in a big, public divorce. Can you blame him for wanting to avoid THAT trainwreck? I can't say I'd be strong enough myself. If he was unhappy with his marriage, then his affair with Monica might have tied his star to hers even more tightly than it was before - you've gotta sympathize with Bill, if that happens to be the case.

Anyway, this is purely speculative. What I'd truly rather believe is that everyone's motives are genuine and good here, and that everyone is still fighting because they think theirs is the best candidate. I know ppl have good reasons to believe to the contrary - I do myself sometimes, but I think party unity is more important. If anyone tries to convince me otherwise, I might just stick my fingers in my ears saying LALALA, so great is my hatred of Republicans. I'll forgive Hillary and the Clintons if, after conceding, they endorse BHO graciously and sincerely. I hope BHO would show the same courtesy to HRC if he should lose the nomination, but I'm of the opinion that he has this thing pretty much wrapped up.

I'll forgive you if you can stick your head between your legs and kiss your own arse. You're obviously good at contortions, mental and otherwise, though pity the creature that would mate with you with your rather primitive notions of relationships.

PS - people screw around because they like screwing around - you don't have to scrabble at straws.

PPS - my motives are genuine and good. Please don't take this the wrong way.

Talk about being all over the map.

Desidero
Could you translate a previous word salad that you posted?

"I'm tired, I'm tired..." Come to me, little children, lay down your
heavy burdens, find solace in me, for I am the light and the life....
There are more here, you know.... Sleep, sleep, little ones.

From the Exorcist, "Take me! Come into me!" For I am the light, the everlasting. Alle ist klaar?

Desidero. Dude. Whoa. I'm not a saint, and my comments aren't always sanitized for the supporters of all candidates. But c'mon, I was trying to make a joke, and I was being genuine and sincere in ending on a conciliatory note. I really just want this to be over, and I've never really cared overly much about who is the eventual candidate. I just can't wait to vote Democratic. The carriage of the candidates, since the race has begun, has caused me to lean toward Obama, but I began this thing with no prejudices.

There is too much rancor in the party right now, and I'm frankly sick of attacks. Exit polls in PA show the electorate think that Hillary Clinton is less trustworthy, even though she just won that state.

My genuine concerns over Hillary's candidacy include:
-lying repeatedly about Bosnia to boost her foreign policy creds
-i expected more policy in the public discourse, and fewer attacks. looking at the ads that played in pennsylvania, i think you'll find that Hillary played mostly negative ads, and that Obama's negative ads were usually run in direct response and with reference to some negative ad first run by HRC.
-she threatened to totally obliterate Iran, summoning up the specter of nuclear conflict. don't even try to debate me on the extreme stupidity of this comment. I'll keep coming back for that one. it's just stupid.

the last time we participated in that kind of mass, indiscriminate, instantaneous slaughter of civilians, we'd been at war with a country for 4 long years, and hundreds of thousands of casualties. suggesting that a nuclear strike on a country that possesses no nukes might be our FIRST response in a hypothetical war is just RETARDED.

I'd suggest your trip down Monica Lane and your rather rude personal comments about Ms. Clinton do not suggest someone seeking the truth and common ground. I would also suggest that Ms. Clinton is in no way to blame for her husband's penis, and I'm still amazed at people who haven't figured this basic fact out. Many people keep their marriages together for many reasons, and we've had the press panting and insinuating over this crap for too many years, and I for some reason am not comforted that you thought this was your own private echo chamber to get your snark on. But if you're ready to play nice, why shucks, all's forgiven.

I'll leave Ms. Lewinsky out of any of my future comments just for you, Desidero.

I don't think you can accuse me of assigning blame for penises and actions in a scenario that I admit (twice) was purely speculation.

The presence/absence of an iconic lapel pin has also caused speculation about whether one's patriotism increases when wearing it openly, most of which has been dismissed by intelligent people.

So please disregard my previous comment as a snarky attempt to explain why Bill Clinton lied/obfuscated to this reporter.

And feel free to disregard my genuine concerns over Hillary's candidacy. Since they didn't seem to generate any response they must have been less important than my snark.

Lapel pins are of course minutia (I personally dislike the US flag's design, good thing I'll never run for office), your comments on real matters can of course be debated, thank you for restraining the slurs and I'll do my best to restrain mine.

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. It reminds me of the Clinton supporters who said that Obama was going to be hounded by the media because he didn't know that you don't shoot duck with a six-shooter. It's just a shallow little story.

Bill Clinton was saying something favorable about a black man -- Jesse Jackson -- and everyone is saying that he's making racially insensitive remarks about it. Give me a break. The guy isn't a racist and hasn't been a racist.

Now, he may have wanted to say something like, "well, Jesse Jackson won South Carolina and we saw where his campaign wound up," and that is fine, too. Could have have used John Edwards (winner of that state's primary in 2004) to make the point? OF course. But his failure to do so HARDLY makes him a racist.

yeah. i never said, nor do i think bill clinton is a racist.

however, you don't have to be a racist to play the race card.

1992 or perhaps in 1996, I would have said I didn't think Bill Clinton is a racist. I was hopeful that a man who grew up in the turbulent south, who watched Little Rock High be desegregated might be less "Dixie-crat" and more "Democrat."

I do not believe that now. I have no hesitation in saying I believe Bill Clinton is a racist, then and now.

Racists do not all wear pointy hoods and white robes. Sometimes they walk the halls of government. Sometimes they pretend to be what they are not. But sooner or later, their true feelings slip out. A little trip of the tongue, the occasion where the subconscious becomes the conscious, the unsaid is said, out loud, in public.

Bill Clinton, former president, is a racist. He has no hestitation in playing the one card he feels is sure-fire to propel his wife to victory: her "whiteness" over Obama's "blackness." He will continue to play it and deny he's doing it until this is over and LONG AFTER. He will blame Hillary's loss on Americans becoming "nigra-lovers" and voting for the black man. He will blame in on black folks not doing the "smart" thing, but "wasting" their vote on the black man. He will blame us for "mischaracterizing" his comments, meaning "black folks overreact" and cry racism at every turn.

I have seen it all before. You will see it all again.

and besides, this is more about bill clintons lies than about his
"jesse jackson" comment. I'm more offended by his constantly shifting story on the scenario: we were talking about south carolina political history.

No, you weren't. You were asked why it takes 2 clintons to beat one obama and you said: Jesse Jackson.

and it doesnt help him that he's denying saying something that we have him on tape saying. he must think we're really stupid.

Give him a little slack.

OK,so in order to be "for" Obama, you have to be "against" not just Hillary but also Bill Clinton--who was the ONLY Democratic two-term president since 1953. This is ridiculous.

Mentioning Jesse Jackson, in any context, is not racist and in no way constitutes a racist slur.

Based on many of the comments on the internet, it appears that the so-called "progressives" are not part of the democratic party. They are newcomers to the system and they want to be able to dictate terms to the democratic party. The real democratic base is the old-time "bleeding heart liberals", but the progressives would never identify themselves that way. And why not? Because they have bought the media propaganda.
