Attack on Iran --Goodbye Whitehouse

Pat Buchanan has predicted that the US will attack Iran before November. Such a move would literally guarantee a Republican win in November. Many people have seen this kind of thing coming. What can be done to stop it? What steps can  people take to demand that congress take steps now to prevent this. This election is big. The Republicans will certainly not cede the country to the Left.

No offense to Mr. Buchanan, but his yearly "predictions" have not often turned out so good.

For this one in particular, hasn't he been making the "war with Iran" prediction for several years now?

I disagree completely that attacking Iran would help the GOP retake the White House. I think it would add to the Democratic rout.

The public isn't too keen on wars in that region right now.

Might depend on who the Democratic candidate is. I doubt Obama could be elected in the middle of a bombing campaign against Iran. Would put him in a tight box. Stop bombing? Start talking to Iran without preconditions? What would Obama's winning argument be?

He would argue that he isn't a Republican, and John McCain is. And Republicans keep proving their intention to get America into wars that the public doesn't want - like this current attack on Iran.
So do you want to vote for McCain, for another 4 years of rash military decisions, or for a Democrat?
That's what he would argue.

Yes, he has. Furthermore, in this case an attack on Iran would be disastrous for the Repubs simply because the current war is highly unfavorable to the majority of Americans; another one would simply remind everyone how the neocons live...on fear. Another war would not be supported especially since Shrub/Cheney/Wolfowitz led the charge into the wrong country after 9/11. And Bin Laden still roams free.

Well, it wouldn't be much of a war. A little bombing maybe. See if we can get them to commit a little in Southern Iraq and bomb them some more. Hard to see what we'd use as an excuse, though.

Iran has already warned that they have an army of something like 60,000 suicide bombers ready to attack US interests in the region.

We're facing 2,000 insurgents in Iraq and the casualties far outweigh the benefits the American people are receiving from the conflict. Imagine adding 30 times as many insurgents ready to die. It's just not worth it, especially since nobody has explained what out strategic interest would be to attack Iran.

Is it because they're aiding the Shiites in Iraq?

The Russians and Chinese aided the North Koreans and Vietnamese, we didn't attack China nor Russia.

We aided the Afghanistani rebels, the Russians didn't attack us.

Certainly Iran poses little threat to the organized US military, but 60k suicide bombers attacking Iraq, Israel and Saudi Arabia is probably the kind of destabilization that will lead to thousands of US deaths, thousands of deaths of our allies and $10 a gallon gasoline.

For what?

How are our vital interests served by bombing Iran when we've made ZERO effort to deal with them diplomatically.

Nixon dealt directly with China, nobody called him weak.

Reagan dealt directly with the USSR, nobody called him weak.

(btw, Reagan never served in the military)

There is no conceivable reason, other than false bravado, to not speak with Iran. We want them to stop messing with Iraq. Have we asked them what will make them feel more comfortable with their neighbor? Iran is meddling in Iraq much in the same way any regional power is going to be concerned about a neighboring country. If Canada was erupting, we'd be involved one way or the other. Iran, while not a very benevolent world player, isn't any different.

There are far too many young men and women in our country that we are going to be putting in harm's way for this jackass in Washington to glibly accept a strike on Iran as a good thing.

The footage on CNN will be exciting and for 24 - 48 hours it will look as though we're putting it to the terrorists...and then the shit will hit the fan. Iran understands that they lose a straight-up war. What they also understand is that asymmetrical tactics work. And then the entire Persian Gulf region is engulfed in flames.

For nothing.

We need to capitalize on energy independence and reduce our interest in the Middle East to dealing with our allies and leaving oil wars in the pages of history.

We can't bomb Iran because they have a pretty nice relationship with China (they give China oil), and we can't afford to piss China off because they own the mortgages on our homes.

That would be more likely to happen if the Repubs were were trying to re-elect the same guy, not elect a new one. But who knows.
