All Hail Petraeus!
I watched with great interest the hearings conducted by Senator Biden on April 2, in preparation for the two days of testimony by General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker before the several Senate and House committees this week. Given the background of the April 2 testimony, the statements and responses of Petraeus and Crocker can be examined through a much clearer lens. That examination cannot be reassuring to the American people.
One of the most bothersome messages that I took from both the general’s testimony and that of the ambassador is the so-called Sunni Awakening. Although they try to frame this as a positive, what their testimony discloses is that there is a cadre of former Sunni insurgents who we now identify by the patriotic moniker: Sons of Iraq. The interesting thing about the Sons of Iraq is that we pay them not to hurt us! Petraeus himself asserted that what we pay these local thugs and villains is less than the cost we would otherwise bear in “blown-up vehicles and equipment, not to mention the price of life.” The idiocy of this proposition is astounding. The most advanced and powerful military force the world has ever know has fallen victim to a protection racket – and our military governor not only lauds this as a major step forward, he lobbies for more funds to continue paying the extortion.
But perhaps I’m being too harsh. Perhaps General Petraeus has hit upon a plan for sure and certain success in Iraq. A plan so elegant in its simplicity that perhaps the general himself has not yet fully grasped it. We need not limit our payments to the Sunni Awakening and the Sons of Iraq. At twelve billion dollars ($12,000,000,000) per month in war costs, we could pay each and every one of the 24 million (24,000,000) Iraqis – every man, woman and child – a $500 per month stipend to simply behave themselves. Since the median income in Iraq is $144 per month (in 2004), this would be a real boon. For a family of four it would be a $2000 per month income without ever lifting a finger. That’s equivalent to a $12.00 per hour full time job for the head of the household. All for simply for keeping the peace! No bombs, no bullets, no blood, no problem. Brilliant.
And of course, while we’re at it we can send a one-time payment of $600 to some Americans to try to purchase their loyalty, too. That money will go to Americans who work for $12.00 per hour – many working two such jobs just to make ends meet. Americans who can’t afford health care and are just a paycheck or two or a serious illness or injury away from losing everything, but they’re not parked on top of one the worlds largest oil reserves. Americans are apparently not contained within the Washington, and particularly the Neocon (neoliberal) definition of “America’s vital interests.” It betrays a greater interest and lust for the American Empire, than patriotic care and love for the American Republic. A trillion dollars a year to support an empire founded on the antithesis of our own founding principles.
What became abundantly clear in this week’s testimony is that General Smedley Butler’s words are as apt today as they were in 1935 when we published War is a Racket.
"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."
Rather than focus on the Sunni Awakening, senators and congressmen ought to look closer to home. There is an American Awakening, too, and we are not rising in a good mood. Not a good mood at all.

Pointed guns-vs-butter observation. Interesting. Thanks.

The United States should stay in Iraq and accomplish our mission. I support General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. They are doing a fine job in bringing home to America the realities of what's going on in Iraq and what's at stake in any future decisions we make as a country in regards to Iraq.
We can't and must not leave Iraq for several reasons.
To see all the reason, go to YourThreeCents.com
This could POSSIBLY BE one of the WORST presidential candidate pools ever. See what America’s Youth is saying about each of the candidates, what they have done for the campaigns and for OUR future.

What is Al Qaeda, Chris. Every bogeyman out there is called Al Qaeda. It's a meaningless word that describes anyone we don't like - first we call them terrorist, then we call them Al Qaeda. As to YourThreeCents.com, you get what you pay for, and three cents won't buy used toilet paper. Your "several reasons" not to leave Iraq turn out to be just two:
"1. Al Qaeda is not fully been destroyed. We cannot allow them to reconstitute themselves and try to undermine the people of Iraq and its government. Al Qaeda has made it clear that they want to push us out of Iraq; then, they want to undermine moderate Arab Countries in the region. Don't forget they also want to destroy Israel, too."
Fact: Al Qaeda - the Al Qaeda that purportedly attacked us on 9-11 is not and has never been in Iraq. There are perhaps 1000 or so thugs who have come into the Sunni regions (a population of about 8 million) and have taken up the mantle of Al Qaeda. There are many thousand gang members in Los Angeles. If they decide to call themselves Al Qaeda in CA, would we send in an occupation force, or would the good people of CA have too much sense to let them do any more than live in the shadow as they do now. It's funny how the right wing wants our enemies to dictate our policies to us. We must stay in Iraq because Al Qaeda says it wants to drive us out. When you enemy tells you X, why should you doubt it? Your enemy wouldn't lie to you, would he. What a putz! THEY SAY THEY WANT US TO LEAVE BECAUSE THEY WANT US TO STAY. Oh, they want to destroy Israel, too. Who else is on that list? Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Yemen, the UAE, and the Persians (Iran), the Afghans, the Pakistanis, and let's not forget Chechnya, Albania, and the republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, or Malaysia or Indonesia - all Muslim countries that harbor no good will toward Israel. So what?
Moving on you say:
"2. If we leave Iraq too soon, Iran will move in to fill the void. That's what was said by the Ambassador Ryan Crocker. And, it's true. Iran will be the victorious one if we leave Iraq too soon. And for that reason, we aren't going anywhere, anytime soon. We have too much invested to turn and run like the Democrats want us to."
Fact: Think about this, Chris Pennyhead (1/3 of 3 cents), Iran has already won. The government we installed in Iraq is beholding to Iran. When the despised Iranian president came to Baghdad, he WAS greeted with flowers and kisses, while our leaders, Bush and Cheney and the whores in Congress need flack jackets, aerial support with attack helicopters, and they are never allowed in a public forum outside the Green Zone. We have no business in Iraq, but Iran actually does. The relationship between Iran and Iraq is as natural as the relationship between the US and Canada or Mexico. They're next door neighbors. The idea that "we have too much invested to turn and run like the Democrats want us to" is another logical absurdity. It is the logic that tells you to buy more when your dream stock is tanking.
But Chris Pennyhead, if you are so convinced that we are on the right course, and given that you came here armed with a post from a youth blog we might assume you are of military age, I hope you'll trot right on down the that Marine recruiter so you can go fight the Al Qaeda terrorists and the Iranians with your very own little hands.
have too much invested

He's spreading his nonsense everywhere today, I see. Check out his profile to see his list of comments.
But anyway, you're absolutely right. I claim no expertise in military, diplomatic, or foreign affairs, but it seems to be the "reduction in violence" we've seen up until recently has been more out of the fact that we are paying the Sunnis to be on our side and because for whatever reason al-Sadr had called the ceasefire. That's fragile "peace" indeed. Didn't they go on strike a week or so ago b/c we weren't paying them in time? As far as the Awakening goes, Maliki wants them disbanded because he does not want a separate military arising, which is obviously what's happening and by our doing no less, so the solution is supposed to be that the Iraqi government will absorb the members of the Awakening. If memory serves, there are about 70,000 members, and about 7,000 or so have been given places in the Iraqi army and other places in the administration. That's nowhere near enough. And he of course, doesn't really want to give them control, as he wants his Shia faction to continue to have control.
Sigh. Now I'm all riled up again. What's happening in Iraq is literally the definition of a clusterfuck. Excuse my language.
