$5000 Plus For Olympic Torch Carrier Protection?
While watching the news tonight they showed the Olympic torch being carried by a man in San Francisco. The man was surrounded by running police officers and several officers riding on 4 wheelers. I counted at least 40 police officers.
I'm probably going to get yelled at by the sports lovers on this site (please keep in mind I like watching the games too) but my first thought after seeing all those officers surrounding that one man was -- how much is THAT costing?
Let's assume that each cop draws about $125 per day. 40 cops times $125 equals $5000. That's not counting the gas for those 4 wheelers, the police and media cars, helicopters, etc..
It always amazes me how much money folks are willing to pay to see their sports.
I don't know about you but I've seen people donate to a new baseball or football field before they'll give to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or any charitable organization in need.
It's kind of sad...don't ya think?

I was out to watch the torch being passed on the Embarcadero. With Chinese and Tibetans on both sides, it was loud. There were a few in the crowd protesting the situation in Dafur. It was classic San Francisco.
I also had the opportunity, the evening before, to see Bishop Desmond Tutu express his feelings about Tibet. It felt like I was seeing Nelson Mandela a second time.
