« Achtung Computer Geeks! I've Got a Question. | Ellen's Blog | Where Have You Gone, Kevin Phillips? »

12 Minutes!

That's how long it takes to post a comment (at 1100GMT on a Saturday morning).  For those new to the site, there were once conversations, here -- really!  How 'bout a poll?

Site management is
a) anti-user
b) lazy
c) incompetent
d) all of the above.

I am reluctant to comment on the cause but I sure am less than happy about the results.

Often I have to log on anew to get a comment posted. Quel drag.

On a lighter topic, I've long wondered if that is your eye in your avatar, Ellen. Please say yes.

or maybe:

e) They need more comment monitors. It would be nice to have the comments appear quicker.

I don't mind having to log in each time-- it just takes a few seconds, and I always have to click it twice but that's no biggie either.

mjshep, if that is her eye then she's way out of your league anyway, so what's the difference? :-)

As a happily married man, my interest in Ellen's eye might be other than what you think. Besides, what makes you so certain that you know what my "league" is, anyway? It might surprise you to find out.

Oh, please,,,

(*the key word)

I echo your sentiment, however, I think the TPM staff is doing all they can to train and care for the carrier pigeons that carry blog posts and comments from the incoming ticker tape to the server room where Andrew Golis handpunches each and every punchcard to be fed into the giant ice-cooled TPM multi-tentacled server known only as "Yog-Sothoth" (shit, am I even supposed to type that 'out-loud'?)

So give the guys a break, we all know the rising oil prices and the devalued dollar has resulted in skyrocketing prices for pigeon-feed not to mention the "tonics" and "liniments" needed to keep Andrew alive amidst the mysterious bitter smokes and acrid vapors that arises intermittently from the deep, dark maw on the server next to the firewire and usb ports.

And here I thought the site was being powered by my mind!

I used to think the lag was an insidious plot to keep you refreshing and clicking to see when your comment would be posted. Because there is no preview and no editing, someone who is not a troll, might want to see how their comment appears before they leave the site.

But I found out that it is just incompetent software traffic routing, because one's comments get posted almost immediately to one's list of comments on "My Profile." You can look at them there right away to see how they turned out, and then leave the site well before your 12 minute waiting period is up to see them on the thread.

And yes, Ellen, you are right, this is not enabling conversation when you plan software so that the person is encouraged to leave after they talk.

"tonics"

Treat your ADD(aggressively...)

You do it today, you'll feel better for it tomorrow, or my name is not Speedy Gonzalez...

What I can't figure out is, they USED to have a BRILLIANT system in which the comments were nicely indented with dotted lines running down to the replying comment below it. It was very easy to follow the conversation. Posts were posted instantly AND the browser sent you right back to your place. Sure, the columns got a bit thin as the conversation wore on, but it all worked nicely.

Then they changed it. Why?
