Witness to Murder - Martin Luther King -- Timing of Show Suspicious
I noted that CNN will be having a documentary on Dr Martin Luther King's assissination this Thursday.
I was wondering if anybody can tell me if they remember CNN or other stations doing this (a King's death story) every year, in the past few years?
Perhaps I've missed the actual assassination documentaries in the past? I've seen stories of the King's life and his 'I have a Dream' speech but it's been a very long time since I've seen a story about the way that he was killed.
CNN's "Eyewitness To Murder" report this coming week, bothers me.
Are they trying to scare Barack Obama supporters into not voting for Barack because he 'might' get assissinated?
That, unfortunately was my first thought when I heard about this upcoming show.
I know for a fact that many blacks were concerned about this happening in the beginning. I don't know if they continue to worry about the possibility or not; but I'm here to tell them, if President George W. Bush survived the past 7 years, the most hated President we've had in years, Barack Obama will survive just fine too.
Don't get me wrong. I think the story needs to be told about King's death; but I'm just concerned about the 'timing' of this one. It's just a couple of weeks before the Pennsylvania and North Carolina primaries.
Why couldn't the cable networks just tell King's life story, as in the past? Why dwell on the assissination itself?
Just makes you wonder is all.

MLK was assassinated on April 4 if I'm not mistaken. That would most likely be the reason.

April 4, 1968. It's the 40th anniversary. They do this every big Kennedy anniversary too.

Remember . . . Hillbots are disconnected from what the rest of the world recognizes as "facts".

CNN has done something every year, I believe -- quite exentive and good, in fact. Some wonderful interviews with his colleagues and reading from his original papers, early drafts of speeches, etc. I couldn't remember when it occurred but probably now as I don't recall it being surrounded by the other events that occur on MLK day.
Doubt it was deliberate focus b/c current events, as those things are mapped out far, far in advance but agree it may be regrettable as it works out. The large elephant in the room. NYTimes had a piece about such fears a while ago which initially shocked but then I decided may as well acknowledge it; perhaps make everyone a little more vigilent. Makes me a little sick to my stomach, to be honest, but I have to respect the family's decision. I know someone, very early on questioned Michelle Obama about it and she said they had discussed the possibly heightened risk, decided not to let fear stop them. Obama himself has been asked and can't recall his exact words, I think about effectiveness of Secret Service, but he's looked it in the eye also. If they are brave enough (which I wouldn't be) I figure I shouldn't let my fears keep me from giving support.
And the heightened concern would be there even if he weren't black. "Change agents" (JFK, RFK) are always at higher risk.

His secret service take his protection very seriously. My son was a volunteer in San Antonio for his campaign and worked backstage at one of his events. He said the secret service swarmed all over the place, as well as the local police. Two of the volunteers went to pick up Obama's luggage to move it to another location and they were assigned a secret service person each to keep an eye on them and make sure they didn't tamper with the luggage. I thought that was strange - why didn't the secret service just move the luggage themselves? Maybe it wasn't in their job description?
