Who are the winners and losers of Ferrarogate?

avatar

I am not sure the Ferraro flap produced a lot of winners, if any, but it certainly did produce a lot of losers.

Obama loses because when the race becomes about race, a lot of well meaning people get uncomfortable with a black man being President (which is not lucky for him).

Clinton loses because, as the always self righteous and clearly personally conflicted Keith Olbermann pointed out, this is a sign of her leadership (or lack there of) and the storyline has been getting more attention due to the lack of post Feb 5 plan, campaign infighting, and slow responses to clearly horrible stuff like this. Oh, it also might look to some (not sure for me yet) like she wanted this to stay out there to gin up more working class racial anxiety to benefit her (which would mean she herself is a race bater).

Ferraro loses because when boxed into a corner at her own doing, she decided to fight the wrong fight and destroy any legacy she had to begin with. Sadly, part of saving herself has included putting down herself as a legitimate VP selection and tokenizing both Obama and Clinton when one is going to be the nominee.

Women and People of Color lose because there have still been zero women Presidents (out of 43), and only 4 governors (out of hundreds) and 3 US Senators (out of hundreds ) have been black. I think it is fair to say that while having the chance to be First Lady has helped Hillary get a leg up (as though Bill getting there had nothing to do with her) and Barack having the unique chance to give the speech of a lifetime in 2004 has helped him get a leg up (the same chance given once to another up and comer, as is often the case, who is white and named Bill Clinton), both have and will continue to face extra challenges due to their identities and this did nothing to help end the situation for either one of them or those who follow in their footsteps.

Keith Olbermann loses because he was so frustrated by Ferraro and the lack of a clear and direct Clinton response that he had to go after a family that he really admires and who have treated him well.

Democrats lose because the "I think either one of them would be fine" and the "Dream Ticket" crowds are getting smaller and the gulf between the candidate's supporters is getting bigger. One of them will be the nominee, likely Obama as he is well ahead, but identity politics will only bring both down in the short and long run.

As for winners, I think Pat Buchanan, Fox News, John McCain, racists, sexist, and MSM selling good ad time off this drama probably qualify.

At this point, I think I would settle for another 18 minute debate over mandates and universal health care that we have seen in one form or another about a half dozen times.

Other winners and losers?
