While We Argue Amongst Ourselves
All hell is breaking loose in Iraq.
Sit-ins, demonstrations in the streets, and worst of all, the cease fire has failed. General Petraeus is backing off of his prior decision to let troops come home this summer.
And John McCain says he doesn't care what anyone says, the surge is working.
I learned all of this by reading the front page articles here at TPM. But all the diaries are about Hillary and Barack.
I am a new member of this community but, from what I have read so far, it seems pretty clear who everybody is supporting and why. No one seems ready to change their position on it. Since most people here are Obama supporters, which is true for the country in general, why are we bothering to engage in pointless disputes with people whose minds cannot be changed by facts?
John McCain is not benign. He is dangerous and as wrong as wrong can be. The whole Hillary lie exposure thing was fine. But why are we not turning that same loving attention to detail against John McCain?
Hillary is losing and at this point she is less and less relevant. Yes, keep working for Obama. Canvass, raise money, make phone calls. But accept that he will be the nominee and start getting ready to take down John McCain.
Because he is BAT-SHIT CRAZY!

Last night, John McCain told a fundraising audience in Palm Springs that he thinks most Americans trusts the General. Personally, I'll say that while I don't necessarily distrust him, I really don't put a lot of stock in what he has to say and I really doubt that most people have an opiion on his trustworthiness, one way or the other.
Yes, the economy and Iraq are both going to hell, but we're getting three or four dozen posts about something James Carville said, four or five days ago.

General Petraeus is probably doing the best he can. You don't necessarily fight a war with the president you want but with the President you've got. We need to get him someone he can work with. But whether we trust him or whether we don't, Iraq is in a very tough place. Despite everyone's best efforts (and I mean on the American side), the cease fire could not hold.
We have got to get out of Iraq.

Magister, I think you're probably right that most people don't have an opinion on his trustworthiness - I wonder if a majority would even be able to tell you who he was. With the media reporting of the war at an unbelievably low level, it wouldn't surprise me to find out they had no idea who he was.
That said, the people that I know who are politically active, who keep up with the news in Iraq, all have a pretty high opinion of Petraeus. Even the most liberal of them. I know that's anecdotal, but thought I'd throw it out there. I think most people that know who he is probably do, because at least some of the time he seems to be giving his honest opinions (like when he came out to say Iraq wasn't making sufficient political progress.) Not to mention the fact that the media loves the man.
I'm starting to wonder though if we shouldn't all be more skeptical in the months to come, as I can't help but wonder if Bush will get to him. Maybe that's my crazy paranoia talking, but that's a symptom of the past 7 years...
And back to the original post - we're in complete agreement. I've starting writing some posts on the scariness of a McCain presidency and will continue to do so.
