What are top three priorities for the Democrat who wins?

avatar

It's January 2009. Your candidate is sworn in. Any decisions he/she makes will have to take into consideration any significant events, national security or otherwise, that transpire between April-December 2008. Having said that, what are the top three priorities of Democrats?

Address the deep economic problems we have resulting from the finical markets (and housing) meltdown due to de-regulation.

Spearhead a full and complete healthcare overhaul that provides true UHC.

Move rapidly to remove our troop presence in Iraq in a swift, sustained, safe manner.

So much to do. I think though that the restoration of justice is up there.

The inaugural address should be an updated version of Carter's "malaise" speech with an even greater emphasis on conservation. Should include a proposal banning the importation or sale of any vehicle that gets less than 30 mpg. Some sort of government funded trade in allowance to encourage people to trade in their gas guzzlers. Large windfall profit tax on oil companies, proceeds to be used find and implement new sources of energy. Hey, I can dream can't I?

Regional diplomacy with Iraq and her neighbors plus all the major world powers to come up with a plan to stabalize and withdraw from Iraq.

Here are the ones I think should be top priority:

-Selection of Attorney General/Restore Department of Justice, the constitution and system of checks and balances

-Develop/Execute withdrawal of troops from Iraq

-Convene meeting of world allies

1. End Iraq War. (End occupation completely; sit down with all players).
2. Not only reversing the tax cuts but a new, new deal to spur the economy, create better and greener jobs (ensure every worker a living wage) and close the wealth gap.
3. End Iran War. (Let's butt out of the ME and end or war on Islam as proxy for Israel; oil prices and Exxon be damned).

Priority #1 - but together a top-notch team of advisors to serve as your White House cabinet/staff

Priority #2 - be ready to put people to work repairing all of the damage that has been done to all of the various agencies and departments (Justice, Treasury, Education, etc.)

Priority #3 - be prepared to meet with and present your plans to the majority and minority leaders in Congress to start building bipartisan support for the well-thought out initiatives on Iraq, the economy, health, education, that you want to focus on for the next four years

I think those decisions(selection of cabinet members, build post-partisan majority) will define the success of a Democratic president.

I also think that when it comes to choosing a VP, it may be wise to find someone with national security expertise, but only for election purposes.

In office, the VP is most valuable building relationships with cabinet members and congress.

Maybe someone has both those qualities

Who says a Democrat is going to win? The Clintons have chosen to and the Democratic leadership are allowing them to destroy party unity and create so much antipathy that John Sidney McCain, III will win the presidency the same way he won the Republican nomination......by default! The Clinton's are the best thing that's happened to the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan. The premise of this question assumes that a Democrat will defeat McCain. If the Clintons get what they seem to want, that won't happen.
