THE CLINTON TAX RETURN SHUCK AND JIVE

avatar

Senator Clinton has consistently said that she will release her tax returns at some point, once she becomes the nominee, perhaps earlier, but not before tax time, and definitely not before a hotly contested primary, but possibly on or around April 15, and I assume before the primary, or even earlier, depending on how busy I am, and if Bill can get all of his receipts together, and that damn phone stops ringing at 3 AM, because I am committed to getting up everyday and working to fully disclose our tax situation to the American people, as far as I know…

Pressed, she (HRC) promises to release them ... at some point.
"I'm a little busy right now," she says. Ben Smith Politico 2/26

“I will release my tax returns,” Clinton said during the debate. “I have consistently said I will do that once I become the nominee, or even earlier.” AP 2/27

But her campaign now says it won't happen until she has the
Democratic presidential nomination in hand, and not before tax filing time comes in mid-April.  AP 2/27

Pressed about the timing of releasing her tax returns, campaign aides were more reticent Wednesday, indicating that Clinton would not release the sensitive financial data during a hotly contested primary, but only at tax filing time. AP 2/27

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is poised to release her tax returns "on or around April 15," Clinton's communications director Howard Wolfson said.  ABC News 3/02

Will you release your tax returns before the Pennsylvania primary?
Well, we're going to do it in April, and I would assume that would be before [the primary].  Newsweek 3/9

Uh-huh.  If Vegas were calling this we could safely say that the chances of seeing the Clinton’s tax returns on April 15 would be less than a sure thing.  Even less of a sure thing would be the release of all of the appropriate tax forms before the Pennsylvania primary April 22.  You see, this lifetime of experience cuts both ways Senator Clinton.  You are selling your Zeliglike, globe-trotting, foreign policy triumphs to an electorate that is much more familiar with TravelGate, the Rose Law Firm, cattle futures, Whitewater, and L’affaire Lewinsky than it is your cork screw helicopter landing into Bosnia with Sinbad, Sheryl Crow, and Chelsea.  In fact, your Sinbad diplomacy was so effective the Macedonian borders were opened the day before you arrived.  Well played, Senator Clinton, well played.  I don’t know about the commander in chief threshold, but you certainly pass the karaoke threshold.  But I digress…

It doesn’t take a great leap of imagination to know how this tax return endgame will be played.  April 15 will come and go with Howard Wolfson placing Senator Obama in the cockpit of United Airlines Flight #175 on the morning of September 11 after he kicked his puppy and burned an American flag in the rec room of a VA hospital while praying to Allah.  Senator Clinton will say that she is getting up every morning trying to get these returns complete for the American people, but Senator Obama’s Ken Starr-like attacks has made it increasingly difficult for her to be in the solutions business.  Shame on you Senator Obama.

As the days tick down to the Pennsylvania primary we will hear a great deal about Tony Rezko, and very little about the release of said tax returns.  Of course there will be the misleading disclosure form or two trickled out, and possibly a partial tax return if the sharks are swimming to close to the kids.  Then the proverbial tax return goal posts will be moved to some convenient time after the Pennsylvania voters have said their peace.

Senator Obama would be wise to put the chaser lights around the April 15 D-Day, but, truth be told, my confidence in the Obama media operation has been greatly shaken these past two weeks.  He seems not interested in, or unable to, control the narrative of this campaign.  Not a good sign heading into what could be a brokered convention, and a November date with the Grand Ol’ Swift Boat Party.  The Obama Surrogate Army should have been deployed weeks ago, and yet, an Obama surrogate is spotted as frequently as 43 at FEMA Appreciation Day in New Orleans.

Make no mistake, as currently constituted, Karl Rove would eat this Obama Campaign for breakfast.  To be fair, there is a desperate, farcical, head-shaking element to the Clinton Campaign.  There will be no knee slappers when Rove is working out of sight for the Straight Talk Express.

Given that she has a current financial disclosure form that tells you all you need to know about both her and her husband's finances that is freely available on the Web at both her Senate site and at opensecrets.org, I don't see what the big deal is.

Do you really believe that? If so, why do you think she hasn't already released these forms? Do you really buy her "too busy" argument? Really?

re: Obama's inability to control the narrative of the campaign

I keep telling myself that if he gets the Dem nomination, the full force of the DNC publicity machine will kick behind him and hopefully provide some professionalism to what has seemed like very sloppy media handling lately. Maybe that'll keep the Rove types from eating him with their cornflakes. Maybe.

The Senate disclosure forms are very vague and do not require very much about the financial dealings. That's why tax returns are disclosed by candidates. After all, HIllary was so disturbed when Lazio wouldn't release his during the Senate run.

That being said, I expect the returns to be seriously sanitized. Where Bill gets his money for the library and his foundation -- that is absolutely essential to determine what favors or influence these donors could have. That goes to the heart of her ability to govern objectively. The Clintons have a long history of playing serious games with cash in this regard.

If you think the Republicans won't get to the heart of it, you really are naive.

avatar

Who are you kidding? Even if you saw the return you wouldn't know how to read it, and you wouldn't learn anything about the library or the foundation, which by the way has dispensed over TEN billion dollars worldwide. Why don't you visit the website and learn something before you pop off?

Shorter BevD: Shut up and stop asking for disclosure, you wouldn't know what it looked like anyway.

I've seen you make this charge at least a couple of times: "Even if you saw the return you wouldn't know how to read it..."

How do you know? What does that mean?

Anyway, even if by chance you're right that olblius wouldn't understand the tax return, there are investigative journalists who WILL be able to read and analyze and report on it.

I don't understand your point.

No way in hell those tax returns will surface "on or before" April 15th. Clinton would have released them long ago if they passed the sniff test.

I wonder what she has up her sleeve if she loses PA?

True.. You notice when Obama is attacked it's all good for him. Her supporters love to say the republicans will be worse. However when she is attacked on something the response is pretty much, leave her alone! Here's a vague explanation of what you're asking about.

The republicans will not accept maybe later. They will hire the best investigators in the world to dig up where the money came from. If they can't they will do exactly what she is doing to Obama, make it up and count on the truth not being as interesting to the MSM.

You have an arguable proposition, that Hillary should release her tax returns, but feel the need to add a couple of paragraphs of rants about what you fantasize the campaign will do to distract us when she releases the records. This used to be called 'making stuff up', but Karl Rove has turned it into a political art form.

When she does release her tax returns, I will be gobsmacked if you don't spend hours pouring over each detail, creating new fantasies about what nasty things the Clintons did for their salaries, about how they took outrageous deductions and asking what favors they got when they made charitable contributions. Given the flights of fancy in this post, I'll bet we'll see some really entertaining, hypothetical constructs.

avatar

If you have been following this election, at least, say, in the past month, you'll find that the Clinton Campaign has survived almost entirely on "hypothetical constructs." Howard Wolfson and Mark Penn are the best (and by best I mean worst) "hypothetical constructionist" in the business, and they have needed to be to keep their campaign from taking on the fatal, final bit of water.

While the Senate reporting may be vague, it is NOT without interest.

The Clintons claimed to be broke & $10M in debt 7 years ago when they left the White House. Now, per Senate filing - Hillary (alone not Bill) has a Net Worth of $35 Million.

My question continues to be: "Under what ethical means could Hillary have gained an net worth increase of more than $35 Million in less than 7 years - most of it on a Senator's salary?"

She may may made $10 Million on her books, but I doubt it. Where else did the money come from? To get a net worth of that much, even with Bush's massive tax cuts for persons in Hillary's tax bracket, would require a gross income over more than $50 Million.

avatar

What the hell are you talking about? He received a ten million advance and she received an eight million advance, plus they receive royalties on the national and the overseas rights, the royalties on paperback and cd sales. Her book alone sold over 1million in hardback sales alone. He makes 200 to 500k everytime he gives a speech (and if you took the time to look at her senate financial forms you can guess how much he makes from that every year) plus what he earns from consultancy fees not to mention his investments.

You also don't know what their "net worth" is or even what that means from your comments. There's no senate filing that states that they have personal wealth of 35mil.

avatar

As far as I'm concerned Hillary can forget the tax returns, forget the millions Bill made fundraising for charity in Kazakhstan, forget all of that.

Just tell me how I can make a blizzard of trades in cattle futures on my first day unlike anyone else ever did. Always wanted to be a rich cattle rancher.

Best, Terry

You bet.

Just show pictures of McCain's peaceful stroll through a Baghdad market.

If that doesn't do it, McCain can talk about how he plans to keep Bush's economic plans alive.

Boy will that ever destroy Obama or what?

Won't even need to tell the public that Obama had a Kenyan father.

Best, Terry

The Clinton's have always removed certain piece of information from key documents like this.

I have no doubt we'll see the tax records released, however it will have a few key pages omitted.

i've always wonder why so many dems could vote for hillary when she hadn't released her tax return. don't you want to know exactly what you're getting into? if there's nothing in there, great! still, you want to know that before you throw your support behind her, right?

this has been an issue for me since day one, hopefully it finally catches on...
