The Clinton Endorsement

avatar

    Slate.com
published an article yesterday putting Hillary's odds of winning the
nomination at a hearty 12%. A member of Hillary's campaign put it even
lower than that, at a meager 10%. The New York Times, a major newspaper
that endorsed Clinton earlier in the primary season put it even lower
that that, at 5%, or 20 to 1. How long she'll be willing to drag on the
campaign in an attempt to beat this odds has been a source of debate,
though everyone but the Clinton camp has acknowledged that the longer
the process goes on, the worse it is for the eventually nominee. There
has been speculation that when Clinton eventually drops out of the
face, she will be unwilling to give her endorsement to Barrack Obama,
as is usually done when a candidate loses a nomination race to another
of their party members. This, however, is a moot point; even if Hillary
does decide to endorse Obama, her endorsement will be meaningless and insincere.

    Hillary
Clinton's 'kitchen sink' strategy marked a turning point in the
campaign. Presumably part of the strategy was to convince voters that
not only would she make a better president than Obama, but John McCain would too. This comment, which will no doubt be played ad naseum by the republicans during the general election should Obama
take the nomination, seems to break an unwritten rule of the primary campaign- the real enemy is always the other party.

    A
recent poll that has gained a lot of attention showed that a whopping
28% of Clinton supporters would vote for John McCain in the general
election if Obama
was to take the nomination. This number isn't altogether surprising
given the tactics of the Clinton camp to argue that McCain is more
worthy to be president than Obama. The question is, if Clinton is to nominate Obama
in the even of her dropping out, what does she plan to say to the 28%
of her voters that are going to vote republican? Another question
is, does she care? Even if there is something that she can say to these
voters to convince them that Obama is the the better candidate, it would take an amount of sincerity that Clinton may not be able to pull off.
