Pro-Hillary Blogger Goes on Strike

Alegre, a pro-Hillary blogger on Daily Kos has announced s/he will go on strike, and is rallying other Hillaristas to join him.

I’ve decided to go on “strike” and will refrain from
posting here as long as the administrators allow the more disruptive
members of our community to trash Hillary Clinton and distort her
record without any fear of consequence or retribution.  I will not be
posting at DailyKos effective immediately.  I will not help drive up
traffic or page-hits as long as my candidate – a good and fine DEMOCRAT
- is attacked in such a horrid and sexist manner not only by other
diarists, but by several of those posting to the front page.

I am not going to defend the mobs of crazed Obama supporters that
drove this blogger to quit and move to a different neighborhood at
all.  In fact, I’ll reject and denounce them, as is in vogue this
political season.

However, I do have one comment.  Hillary supporters act so shocked
at the backlash their candidate has received, especially in the
Blog-o-sphere.   Some, including Alegre, accuse the backlashers as
being sexist.

Well, I think it’s a fine trick to try to put the spotlight on the
angry Obama supporters who are expressing their outrage rather
immaturely (if you need proof, see some of my posts!)

But the reality is, this reaction is a “REACTION” meaning it didn’t just appear out of thin air.  This sort of attack wasn’t happening before Hillary’s campaign went negative. And trying to spin it as sexism is absurd.

In the political marketplace, Hillary and her campaign decided to
get ugly and go negative.  That was a calculated risk that paid off in
the short term with wins in Ohio and Texas, which kept her campaign
alive for another few months.  However, people are not going to gloss
over “how” she won.  And there was some serious long-term consequences
for her going negative, not all of which have even totally played out
yet.  For example, we’ll have to see what happens at the convention and
the in the general election to truly evaluate the long-term effects of
her campaign’s decision.

Personally, I would not blame her at all for going forward and
staying in the race, if she had won by selling her campaign.  But
that’s not how she did it.  And if she and her supporters are feeling
the squeeze and the pressure resulting from her campaign’s decisions,
well, I’m not that sympathetic.  If your candidate changes course
either policy-wise, or tactics-wise, then you have a choice to continue
your support or not.  If Obama were to change course in a way that I
didn’t like, I would no longer support him.  Just as I am shocked at
Republicans who continued to support Bush, despite the fact that his
presidency turned out to be so completely different from how he ran in
2000.

But if Hillary supporters continue to support her campaign, then I
assume they tacitly support what she and her campaign says and does.
And if they get flack from other democrats, well, what did they expect?

I started considering not voting for Obama since he used Donnie McGlurkin as a dog whistle for homophobes in South Carolina. His continual use of phony charges of racism are also appalling.

The sexist treatment of Hillary commenced before she decided to run.

Blaming the victim is a very old, very sad tactic.

I meant to write this separately, but I think McClurkin's perspective is important in this:

Obama becoming president is bad for you if you are a homophobe because he is progressive on those matters. But McClurkin is working with Obama despite their differences on GLBT issues.

That is what I mean when I commend Obama for his ability to reach non-progressive people to build coalitions to be able to work on progressive issues with a mandate. Getting things done. Changing minds.

That is the 'naivete' that Clinton derides.

Obama's church's retired pastor, Jeremiah Wright, is one of the few leaders of major black congregations who has made his commitment to embracing the gay community very clear and public, both in his sermons and in the church's HIV/AIDS ministry. If we're going to tar the guy with all of his supporters' negative positions, aren't we obligated to give him credit for their positive ones?

By blaming the victim, you mean like Ferraro did???

He who fights against monsters should see to it that he does not become a monster in the process. And when you stare persistently into an abyss, the abyss also stares into you. Friedrich Nietzsche

Taylor Marsh is right. I have written the same thing to Josh. Look at any headline by Soy Boy (whatever his name is) or others. Just meant to distort the record of Senator Clinton. I see more of these posters just slamming Senator Clinton than praising their own candidate. And it hasnt been before the Clinton campaign went "negative". How anyone can consider the phone ad negative is beyond me or any politically reasonable person. Many supporters praise Senator Obama yet engage in tactics that would make him blush (or would they?).

Sorry. Stopped reading after "Taylor Marsh is right."

avatar

Amen to that.

Supposed supporters on both sides do this. But who knows who's who in this realm. Could it be pretend Obama/Clinton supporters who're really Rupublican trolls trying to cause division within the Dem ranks? Here's the thing, if you don't want to see that kind of stuff, then don't do it yourself (I'm referencing the "or would they?" jab).

avatar

I don't know where this idea came from that Clinton went "negative" and Obama stayed "positive". It isn't true - looking at both their commercials and mailers, they seem to attack each other equally.

I don't know how people can comment that Hillary did not start getting attacked until her campaign went "negative". Has anyone even seen the anti-Hillary shirts that continually refer to her as a B$#^H. I honestly find it offensive and if anyone were to dare make a shirt calling OBAMA anything close to a racist term it would not only be HEADLINE NEWS but somehow they would find a way to blame it on the Clinton campaign.

I think that the choice to stop blogging is a mistake but I can see their frustrations. I am tired of having to defend and more importantly correct the Obama supporters. They continuously lie about HRC's positions and use the offensive language that does not belong in a political conversation.

Yes, I have seen terrible things said about Obama but they usually reference his race and are posted by what I perceive to be as people that are ignorant and racist...also more than likely non-HRC supporters. As an African American and a woman I had expectations that sex and race would play into this nomination process but I had no idea they would be dominating the campaigns and the blogs. I hope that the bloggers reconsider their position because in the end it will only hurt the supporters of HRC.

avatar

except that they are made by HRC supporters. High level supporters. people in the HRC campaign.

Look, the sexism sucks and the racism sucks, and both shouldn't be a part of this campaign. But it's a stretch to suggest that t-shirts calling Hillary a B$#^H are made by the Obama campaign or anyone connected to them, any more than the racist anti-Obama t-shirts(which are all over the Internet, by the way and haven't gotten any headlines as you say they would--"Frobama,""Obama got Luv 4 Thugs 2," "White Guilt '08") are made by the Hillary campaign or anyone connected to them. The supporters on both sides have been awful to each other, but it's pretty ridiculous to suggest that Hillary supporters went negative only after Obama supporters went negative. Obama supporters drink the Kool-Aid, remember? We're in such messianic love with our savior that we're full of hope and change and tie-dye t-shirts. It's disingenuous to suggest that the HRC tactics were sparkling and the Obama tactics were dirty this entire campaign, when the facts suggested that Obama's campaign, while not "sparkling," has been more consistently on-message about issues and political realities and not about identity and race/gender baiting than HRC's campaign.

avatar

I just had to say that the title of your article alone made me laugh. So typical.

oceankat, I love the quote.

Alegre is of the school that wants to be able to say whatever she wants about Obama and his supporters and then is shocked, SHOCKED when people respond rudely back to her.

avatar

I just think it is silly. You don't like the atmosphere of a KOS, move on. What's the big deal?

Did I miss something? Was there a contract signed? Did money change hands? What??

Janeo

That's what I did. I don't post there any more, but I didn't go post a GBCW diary and pretended it was a boycott. That's funny to me...People get so high on themselves on the internet.

But what really kills me is the selective memory of some of the above posters. AJM continues to post that Obama makes "phony charges of racism", yet never answers when or what those "phony charges" were.

Someone referenced the telephone ad, like that was the Clinton's first attack, like all the digs from last summer and fall were negative. Like the race-baiting/xenophobia throughout all of December didn't happen. Like the Clinton's didn't send out a false mailer in NH, like there were no racist robo-calls in SC.

Please.

Uh... wasn't it Tina Fey who opined that "Bitch was the new black"?

And here are the old, old tactics:

Crying;

Saying "no fair";

Holding your breath until you turn blue.

avatar

Its funny coming from the obama supporters who jump at every opportunity to cry racism at everything! the crazy chris matthews is now apparently finding something racist about the 3 A.M ad now.. and i'm sure lot of the obama supporters here think the same way! i used to think racism is rife in america, what i realized through this election is reverse-racism is just as rife!

nah uh

you did

Shouldn't there be a rule that before you "go on strike," you must first prove that someone else beside your cat actually cares?

avatar

Going on strike?

How - Randian!

avatar

The bloggers have gone on strike.

But what about THESE people?

http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2008/03/hillary-in-da-house.html

I think HRC owes us all an apology.

Ouch. Don't just spring something like that on us without warning!

Great. Fifteen seconds after I finally get that evil "Hillary, Hillary, Restoring our Democracy" video purged from memory, you go and do this to us?

DUDE! That was NOT COOL.

Ok, maybe a little over the top but no more offensive than that ridiculous Will.i.am video or the Obama girl.. Do you find i offensive because those are actually "real" people being original and admittedly kind of corny rather than taking a phony speech and turning it into a music video?

Why should HRC apologize, she's not in the video? I also doubt she even knows it exists.

What I happen to like about this video is that it's just regular voters finding a way to support their candidate. I am so tired of famous people and or "artists" on both sides making these stupid commercials.

Since we are doing video links how about this one. Kind of sad because I love Stevie's music but my best friend had the perfect comment.

"How am I supposed to believe they can lead our country if they can't lead a blind man on stage?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEA8MnI1Ia8

Oh my, that was, um...um....um....interesting?

Once again, some women identify so personally with Mrs. Clinton that they take attacks on her recent campaign tactics like it's some kind of condescending personal attack on them, Casualties of war, I guess.

I have watched almost every debate and especially the recent ones, and I have been struck by how humble Obama is personally and how completely respectful he has been towards Hillary, whereas Hillary seems to be less graceful about that -- she really seems to struggle with the notion that Obama might possibly be beating her decisively enough to win this because people who have considered both of them very carefully prefer him to her (as opposed to having become delusional all of a sudden). Despite every campaign tactic and the twisted "big state argument for överturning the democratic process", he continues to be respectful, humble and measured in this reactions. But his senior aides and supporters on the web are often out of control, and in response, some of the Obama supporters are equally obnoxious, and everybody needs to take a chill pill and get over themselves. This will end after the primaries are over, and the superdelgates will be very hard pressed not to support Obama if he is 150 ahead in pledged delegates at that point, as he will almost certainly be.

PS - I hope they do-over FL and MI, but if not, there is no way this election can be decided by seating delegates in state where the candidates pledged in writing not to particpate or compete -- it's unfair to everybody else in the other 48 states. Indeed, a good part of the fury that the Obama supporters feel towards the tactics of the Clinton campaign is the incredibly undemocratic power play -- steal delegates by breaking the rules in MI and FL, demand victory even though you may be behind by every metric because you won 6 states in particular? This kind of stuff conjurs up FL 2000, and the way it felkt there when the popular will was thwarted by the elites -- and look what that got us.

I think

Don't you have to be employed before you can go on strike?

There's a guy up the street who waits on the corner with a bottle of Windex. When a car comes, he rushes out and sprays the windshield and wipes it with a paper towel, hoping that the driver will give him a dollar.

Today I drove past the corner and noticed he wasn't there.

Today Alegre announced her "strike."

Coincidence?

Four-year-olds, when they start losing, don't want to keep playing either...

What a tantrum (in the form of a -fake- dignified boycott)!!

Don't wanna post? No problem: You don't have to!!

The really weird part is, free speech is a double-edged sword: You're free to voice your opinion, but others are free to call you whatever names they think appropriate in response.

In other words, you can't be SHOCKED! SHOCKED! when someone actually responds to what you say, in particular, if that response is negative. It's the very nature of living in a free society.

This sort of childish "Fine! If you don't like me, I'm taking my ball and going home!" is simply pathetic.

avatar

THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR HILLARY!!!

YAY, IDIOTIC!!

LOL, you can't "go on strike" unless you are getting paid.

If Hillary supporters feel they no longer want to share their opinions, fine by me, one less post I'll have to comment on.

By the way, I find the "I'm a victim" mentality of both Hillary and her supporters laughable. She was the favorite to win, and even though she is not likely to win, most media outlets still consider this contest "tied".

What more do Hillary supporters want?

So much drama. I kind of miss being apolitical and apathetic. It all used to seem so pointless and sometimes I wonder whether it still is when I see dumb things like people who don't get paid to blog at a particular website decide they're on a strike. But no, I had to get all inspired and try to make my vote count for something so that we can get away from Bush's destructive policies and the standoff in Congress from the Clinton years. November can't come soon enough.

avatar

Hillary started this campaign with huge advantages, most of which she has frittered away through overconfidence and ineptness. Her message, shaped by advisers like Mark Penn, has gone through so many incarnations that it's clear they had little real meaning to her. Her campaign has lacked genuineness and authenticity. The fact that she surrounds herself by people like Penn and Wolfson should concern us all.

I started this campaign without a favorite. I had doubts about Hillary since so many people outside the Democratic party disliked her so intensely, but I respected her. I'd still vote for her; we really can't afford another go 'round of Republicanism, nor more Alitos on the Supreme Court. But my respect for her has been draining away.

Obama has become the front-runner by running a smarter and better organized campaign, and by being a more consistent, genuine, and inspirational candidate. It's pretty clear.

People on both sides identify with their candidate, and have a lot invested emotionally. We all tend to react when people degrade us (Kool-aid drinkers, etc.) or make absurd attacks on the candidate we support ("empty suit, etc.)

I'm a 52 year old white guy; I haven't felt this way about a candidate since RFK, back when I was in the 8th grade. White men have made a mess of things, and I'll gladly support for the right African-American woman when she comes along (meaning someone who now only has the right qualities, but actually has a chance to be elected). I doubt I'll see it in my lifetime, but four years ago I would have never though I'd see an African American of either gender with a decent shot at the presidency. It's a great thing.

I realize many women, and apparently some men, also really identify with Hillary, and also take attacks on her personally. I wish everyone would be a bit more Gandhi-ish, but I'm not holding my breath. Nor have I managed it myself, most of the time. But even though some many of us are personally identified with these two candidates, it's really about the changes that need to happen in this country and in this world if we hope to survive and flourish. In the long run, if the progressives in this country can't get it together, we're in for a countinuing long, slow decline, or a faster, more horrible descent. I'm not sure there are enough of us even if we pull together. But at least there's hope that way.

avatar

I'd still vote for her; we really can't afford another go 'round of Republicanism, nor more Alitos on the Supreme Court. But my respect for her has been draining away.

Just as my respect and hope for Obama as a candidate has done. But I'll still vote for him ahead of McCain. I don't think Obama would accomplish anything as prez but even he can handle judicial appointments.

Someone PAY ATTENTION TO ME!

but only if you agree with me

I avoid the KOS site in general. But I went and did a brief dig into this person's diary to see what I could come up with. The first thing I found was a regurgitation on all the negative things HRC and supporters (including Greg Sargent) have said about Obama. Including the discredited NAFTA story.

Obama's Iraq Plan: Just Words

Once again, it looks like Senator Obama is telling voters one thing while his campaign says those words should not to be mistaken for serious action.

After months of speeches from Senator Obama promising a hard end date to the Iraq war, his top foreign policy adviser that counseled his campaign during that period is on the record saying that Senator Obama will "not rely on some plan that he's crafted as a presidential candidate or a U.S. Senator."

Voters already have serious questions about whether Senator Obama is ready to be Commander-in-Chief. Now there are questions about whether he's serious about the Iraq plan he's discussed for the last year on the campaign trail.

I did not bother to look for negative comments after that. Who needs facts when you have a HRC memo to quote from? Hell, who needs a diarist who only quotes HRC memos?

Cry me a river.

Since I am free to call Hillary what ever I want
then as I have stated in other Blogs she is the IRON BITCH!!!She will say or do anything to win
this election. What will the Obama supporters do if this smells of a backroom deal to give the nomination to Hillary? Will they walk? Will they pout and stay home in Nov?Or will they hold they hold there Noses and vote for the Iron BITCH!!!
Did not Hillary WIN Ohio on a LIE?When Bill was in Canada just a few days before the Ohio Primary?
Remember NAFTA Gate? How about the Obama staffer that called Hillary a MONSTER?I will say she was not far off the mark either.I will say this in closing if Hillary is on around in up or any where on the Ticket I will vote for John McCain!!
Enough said guys and you can take that to the Bank.

avatar

Easy to spot pubbie trolls.

avatar

Pardon me, sir, but it seems that your hypocrisy meter is broken. Obama's charges are "phony" but Hillary critics are "blaming the victim".

Either both are victims or neither. Take your pick, but your idea that only one of them has been subjected to prejudice is pure baloney.

avatar

Matt from CC - ...in state where the candidates pledged in writing not to particpate or compete --

Can you produce that agreement, Matt? Why was Obama's name on the Florida ballot and why did he run ads there? We both know why he took his name off of the Mich ballot. It was a cheap political stunt along with Edwards to try to embarrass Clinton while they were pandering to Iowa. (For the record, Iowa is an acronym for Idiots Out Walking Around. Thought you should know...)

avatar

I guess trying to step back and objectively look at what's happening here and in a much worse way on other sites is not to be expected. But I would thing most would agree that the power of sites like Kos comes not from Markos Moulitsas Zúniga but from the size and activism of the community he has been instrumental in creating. If that energy is fragmented, if people are driven away it hurts us all. If we cannot treat each other with respect no matter the differences in our opinions our ability to affect the course of our nation, already small, will be diminished. Fortunately this site has not reached the nadir Kos has. This from the kos link given above

--------------------------------------
No, I won’t post specific attacks here. That would just be repeating the lies and the hate, but I will note that one of my fellow Kossaks (someone with whom I thought I could agree to disagree) went so far as to suggest that others try to dig up real life information on the pro-Hillary members of our community. To what end? Was his aim to find enough information on us to try to get us fired from our jobs and leave our families homeless – or worse? Suggesting that they dig up real life information on us is the lowest form of intimidation and goes way beyond the limits of all things civil and reasonable. It’s nothing more than the worst form of thuggish, hateful and intimidating behavior toward other members of our community.

And what is this 'community' of which you speak?

Reminds me of the old joke ...

The Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by Indians about to attack. The Lone Ranger says, "Looks like we're in trouble, Tonto." Tonto replies, "What do you mean 'we', white man?"

You crazy, me not. Both of us with internet access. Reality: lines are gonna get drawn here as in the meat world. Deal.

Do you not notice how you've reduced this to a contest that's now all about how you've been treated, as opposed to, say, making it about the real differences between how these two opposing Democratic campaigns have been run? One campaign winning and the other campaign waiting/hoping/grasping for some deus ex machina to save the day?

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.

Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, "Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?"

The Lone Ranger replies, "I see millions of stars."

"What that tell you?" asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, "Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Tonto?"

"You dumber than buffalo shit. It tells me that someone has stolen our tent."

Somebody wrecked your candidate's coronation and it happened while your champion was sleeping at the wheel. Don't turn around and blame me for merely pointing out the obvious. That Hillary's campaign now relies on continued obfuscation of the facts on the ground is not my fault. Choose someone else to hate, say, for example, her dumb-as-bricks advisors.
