Wow

What can you say to what he has done with this campaign? Any dem (Im an Independent) who doesn't want this guy at the front of the party is nuts.

Holy @#*&^@#$. The last time I looked at that number it was just after March 4 - at 1,045,000.

This is absolutely incredible.

To all those readers

Can you recommend this post (use "recommend this" button on the top) and push this post to the top ? I learnt that you could recommend only once, unfortunately.

Many people need to see this and feel vindicated and elated by their support to BHO.

Ben Smith blog is going gaga over this and many HRC converts are happily blowing BHO's horns.

Replying up here so people maybe see it before commenting further:

[b]THE GRAPHIC IS GLITCHED AND IS NOT ACCURATE[/b].

Obama's campaign confirms it, and others have independently noted that the graphic's numbers move in unrealistic ways for weeks.

Give Obama credit for the real things he's managed to accomplish; don't diminish them by clinging to a buggy graphic.

Some day, I'll remember that TPM doesn't accept BBcode for style, and will successfully bold text when I think something needs to be easily spotted.

That is really incredible. One of these days Obama is going to pull out his fund raising statistics and show the uncommitted and Clinton leaning superdelegates and this campaign will be over.

I glanced at it Tuesday evening after the speech and the counter was a million, six hundred thousand something (really don't remember what the rest of the numbers were.) My son came home from several days backpacking on Wednesday and I looked at it again and it was at 1,707,000. I remarked to him that it was good that the donations were coming in - it meant that people were listening to his speech and responding to it. But to see the number increase by about 275,000 in the 3 days since then is pretty amazing.

avatar

In other words, he does not need the Democratic Party. But they sure as hell need him.

"In other words, he does not need the Democratic Party. But they sure as hell need him."

Golden words. If the SD's pull the wool over the democrats, I would strongly suggest and support BHO going Indie.

The SDs have absolutely no motivation to throw this for HRC, so don't worry -- Barack isn't going to confront that problem. And I'm confident in his loyalty to the Democratic party.

But this fundraising surge is crazy. Someone really ought to show these numbers to the SDs. I trust when they actually hit 2 million donors, there will be some articles. But it's significant that this comes in the aftermath of last week's speech.

Even if that happens, Barack isn't going to throw Hillary under the train. And the super-D's are well aware of these statistics. It's one of Obama's electability arguments.

The truest 17 words perhaps ever spoken.

I am not surprised. My donations to Obama have been based on desire for real change Senator Obama represents and to turn the page away form devisive/code word/ triangulation politics. Senator Obamas themes have played out in fascinating ways I may not have expected, but the crass devisive Politics , lack of transparency and lack of reality of the Clinton campaign has reinforced my views one hundred times over. No states she lost matter no matter how embarassing the margin, no endorsement for Obama matters as they are useless ( or Judas ) and no fact matters ( ie NAFTA support) as they can simply create your own reality. This is what Bush and his people have done for 8 years and we are in a really bad place. Change isnt easy but it is coming . The number of donations from people who realy care are part of the proof as are the young people and enthusiasm across the Country. As all Obama supporters should now know, you have to stand tall and face to face with the many forces resisting change ( Clintonists, Hard core Republicans and Right wing media outlets) and in a polite way explain why you are for Obama. That is the example Senator Obama has done his best to show since the beginning, and yes, his supporters can as well. Now go on line and gove alittle more as we need to ensure the March numbers keep track with Clintons who will have a very good March in fundraising. Yes we can.

Not so fast -- I've been called a little paranoid at DailyKos, but no one seems able to link to this counter independently. And the odd thing -- the last three digits are always as "525". Now, some people are saying the counter is "rounding up." But it never did before when it was on Obama's homepage before March 4.

So I'm skeptical. No one would be happier than me if it's true. I would assume if it hits 2,000,000 today or tomorrow, there will be some official press about it.

Right now I'm staying cautious.

Hi 57andFemale - The counter is still embedded in one of the Obama staff blogs (Sam Graham Felson) from mid-February and that counter has the same number as TM's does above.

http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/gGgjv9

Wow - two million donors - that is amazing!

Excellent news !!!

avatar

That's just crazy. And Clinton is broke.

Makes sense to me. Apparently people are paying attention.

Well, you can say he used money to carpetbomb Ohio and Texas with commercials and he still couldn't win.

Take your head out of the sand. He won Texas, however much you would like to spin it. Period.

As far Ohio, I am sure those peeps are peeved now, now that NAFTA gate is out.

Good thing he's not running for President of Ohio.

Or, you could say that Obama was able to use his resources to close up a HUGE polling lead in Hillary Clinton's favor...and he did so in less than two weeks.

And remember--the Clinton brand gives Hillary the name recognition advantage of an incumbent.

So even though you may have the taste of sour grapes in your mouth, you can't deny that the money, the support, the momentum of this "insurgent" candidacy is amazing.

avatar

My math skills aren't the best, and am not up on the rules for the general, but lessee....

If every donor maxes out....

2,0000,000 X $2,300 = $4 Billion.

Plus, thats two MILLION smaller donors, like me, who have never felt they had a voice in what happens to us. People who have grown increasingly unhappy with the Washington power elites who have managed to LOSE presidential elections over and over again. It is not lost on me that these power players are precisely the ones who oppose this change from elite rule to grass roots, 50-state party-building.

It's a necessary struggle to reclaim the soul of teh party, to start to shove back against the overwhelming power of the concentrated corporation, including the corporate media that fewer and fewer own. But the people are speaking. It's time for the "leaders" to scramble now to get to the head of the parade.

"Those are my people. I must follow them, for I am their leader." -- Ghandi.

It's now going to get very, very serious. I fear for my country, but have great hope, too. Change is the essense of who we are, and trust we will not be afraid any more.

avatar

We were are roughly 300,000 in mid Feb

Think about that. 5 weeks. 1.7 million donors

Folks, I'm having reality-principle qualms. Surely the donor base can't just double in a month! I'd love to believe that this is an Easter miracle, but I've got to think it's more likely that this is a broken counter. Let's make sure before we get too excited. I'm going to e-mail the campaign, and I'll post again if I get an answer.

avatar

I was with 57andFemale while I was reading this. THe post that followed hers did get my hopes to rise a bit, but come on. The guys amazing, the campaign is amazing, the people that support him are amazing, but an additional million in what, 5 weeks?

And then this...http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/gGgxnk

avatar

Can this actually be possible?

Isn't that a million in March alone?

As much as I want to celebrate, it just seems impossible. The campaign hasn't even been pushing heavy for donations this month.

avatar

The fact that the Obama campaign hasn't been publicizing this number at all, in contrast to the run-up to the first million donors (remember all the emails that you got, before and after the moment?) is a good sign the counter is broken and tabulating something else.

Is that individual donors, or donations? If it's the latter, it should say donations rather than donors.

avatar

I think it's possible. Obama's speech on Tuesday prompted me to open my wallet for the first time since John Edwards dropped out of the race. I bet there are plenty of others like me out there.

avatar

If these numbers are accurate, it is over. I would have thought about 1.4M to 1.7M. but 1.90M is special. I contributed average amount on 2/26/08 I was at about 997,000 in the contributer line(I wanted to be in the first 1M). The last number I saw was about 1.2M contributers. This would mean roughly 1M in a month.

This may be a reaction to Wright as many did not believe the hype, the speech concerning race, and the recognition that HRC is toast by many who had not contributed. Obama did reach much deeper levels than the MSM generally reports, which may account for the numbers in recent days and weeks.

Also, Clinton is effectively in debt, and if these numbers are correct Obama may exceed the $55M in Feb. which suggest $150M in the first quarter. With about 2M contributers who are not tapped out for the primaries, the numbers in dollars become NUTS. In the fall on average $100 X 2M coattails become factories; hell the factories would be with only 1.5M contributers.

THIS IS NEW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ben Smith at Politico posted an update saying that the counter is incorrect. It will be exciting when it happens but it doesn't look like it will be today.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/Closing_on_2_million_donors_this_year.html#comments

So do you think he's got more money now that Mitt Romney had?

No, but I think he has more supporters. Mitt's money was his own - what we are talking about on this thread is DONORS Lelo.

Your and your candidate's Hubris (yes, with a big H) will be cause of this great debacle. Go to Ben Smith's blog and see the prodigals returning back in droves. It will make you weep.

Umm, My previous post was for Lalo..

avatar

I understand we need be cautious, but it inspired me to send another contribution.

Please everyone that has a primary coming up, please, please vote in your primary. You just might seal the deal.

avatar

CAMPAIGN TELLS POLITICO IT IS NOT ACCURATE.

Which sounds right as 1 million new donors in 20 days or less would be something else.

avatar

Hysterico.com says its closer to 3 million!

Come on, people. If something is as implausible as this, don't you want to exercise a little skepticism, maybe wait for a confirmation or two, perhaps initiate a few inquires yourself, or even apply a little logic? If the graphic was anywhere near to being accurate, don't you think someone would have noticed it before today? You know, like day before yesterday, when we had the stories about fund-raising in February? Surely someone would have pointed out that in addition to February's huge haul, Obama is now performing a miracle to rival the Resurrection.

This is embarrassing.

avatar

I just made my first donation.

avatar

It wouldn't surprise me because I HAVE NEVER GIVEN TO ANY CANDIDATE UNTIL OBAMA. I have given $200 in March with the Wright controversy which is the reason I gave. I want to make sure the status quo knows we aren't falling for their crap this time.

avatar

I gave my pensioner's mite this month for the same reason you did. Character assassination, you say? Stuff this $30 million in your pipe and smoke it!

I do hope Barack posts substantial donations for the month of March, but we should keep expectations realistic. Is $30 million too much to hope for?

I wish there were a running tally so we could see the immediate effect of our donations. BTW, has the campaign not set a goal for this month?

avatar

Obama won the state of Texas with delegates and considering he was down by 20 points, I would say money matters.

avatar

iluvobama---

Oh my god! You made my day. I'm so happy you donated during the "Wright scandel". That story has been ticking me off to no end. It is a complete distraction from real issues like the economy and the war. The media was not only insulting Obama with their shallow coverage, by taking the attention away from real issues, they were disrespecting voters all over America.
But thanks to people like you I feel like this country is pushing through all that crap and heading to a brighter future.

avatar

Since I've never been called for an opinion poll, I thought the best poll for me is to make a contribution to the Obama campaign. :-)

max w and iluvobama.

Welcome to the Club and may your tribe increase!!!

I just looked...

It is 6:48 EDT on Sunday, March 23rd...

The counter is at 1,999,525

Incredible.

(And I'm one of them...yea!)

avatar

Here's the latest word from Ben Smith at Politico.com:

"Obama aides say the graphic is inaccurate, due to a technical glitch. Clearly the frame is out of date..."

Realistic goals and expectations are important!

I just looked at Hillary's site and she's at 666,666.

avatar

I'm not sure how I found this blog but I'm glad I came here. On another note, I believe this 2 million donor is real. I was viewing Obama's speech on race, "A More Perfect Union", and it has become a favorite on YouTube with over 3,000,000 views since March 18th.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWe7wTVbLUU

If this transfers to donations, I can believe
Obama is increasing donors at a phenomenal rate since his speech.

avatar

Think you got part of the answer!
10% = 300K; 15% = 450K, maybe; more does not see reasonable. This means individual contributers; the number of individual contributions likely exceed 2M due to two or more discreet contributions given by many individuals.
The figure, 300K plus the others prior to the YouTube would exceed 500K in new individual contributers.
Obama's campaign does not push their numbers; they had a challenge in Feb. to reach 1M individual contributers that was reached in late Feb( it started as a challenge to reach 500K new contributers in 2008). During this period it was updated frequently. It stopped about three weeks ago. Given the above 1.5M individual contributers does not see unreasonable, and a significant portion may stem from the You Tube 3M viewers as after elections a large number of new contributers would show up in the numbers then posted at Obama's campaign website.

avatar

Blue Skies, I'm not sure if the Politico guy is truthful. I think the 2 million number is real. Has Politico viewed the views of Obama's speech "
A More Perfect Union" at YouTube? At this 1 location alone, it has over 3 million views since 3/18 and it's ranked #1 with other honors.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWe7wTVbLUU

This isn't counting those who have posted the video elsewhere. If this translates to donors, I can believe the increase in donors. It's truly amazing because I gave for the first time in March.

avatar

And 90% of his money still from Rezko and Oprah

You're becoming a caricature of yourself.

Louisville1975, you must be a victim of New Math where 1+1=20

Two million? That is macrotrendic. This proves that Senator Obama is quixotically pursuing irrelevant macrotrendic groups. Meanwhile, Senator Clinton has wisely and forcefully obtained the clear upper hand in all of the decisive microtrendic categories.

This raises serious concerns about Senator Obama.

Just for the record, I also decided to donate $50 after I was deeply moved by his Speech on Race. So I am assuming many others were similarly moved to donate as well.

A more important consideration, the HRC campaign is essentially broke as it has maxed out its small number of high-end donors.

avatar

So Merlot, your saying money matters more than ideas?

It does when you need to buy TV ad time. To talk about your ideas. Which is what Obama's doing now here in Pa.

Frequently. During the NCAA's all afternoon today, and since Friday.

Amateur.

avatar

....and during ESPN's Sports Center here in Philly at 11:14 PM.

avatar

What are you talking about? "macrotrendic." lol I'm a person who NEVER GAVE TO ANY CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN until now in the month of March. Why? Because the mainstream media was getting on my last nerve and I had only one option to have my voice hear. Contribute to the Obama capaign! If you consider that "macrotrendic," so be it! It felt good and I encouraged my friends to give too! :-)

What are you talking about? "macrotrendic." lol I'm a person who NEVER GAVE TO ANY CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN until now in the month of March.
You prove my point. "People who have never given to any candidate's campaign" is, quite clearly, a macrotrendic category, and therefore is utterly irrelevant.

Meanwhile, one quite simply cannot overstate the importance of the various microtrendic groups which are being completely dominated by Senator Clinton - for example, "ambidextrous lion tamers", "widowers aged 25 years or younger with real estate holdings between 9.5 and 9.8 acres", and of course the ever-important "people with eleven or more fingers from Missouri and/or Massachusetts, not including Barnstable County, Massachusetts".

This raises serious concerns about Senator Obama.

I just kicked a little more cash into the Obama bucket. I couldn't find the counter, though. Have they taken it down? Either way, I'm glad to get them one closer to the two million mark!

Go Obama!!!

avatar

I am waiting for the talking points on this to come out on Fox news. I can hear Brit Hume now...

With 2 million individual donations to the Obama campaign, are the citizens of the United States having an unfair influence on the presidential race?
