McCain: Catholic. Protestant. What's the Difference? (For Real!)

Everyone who's nailed McCain for confusing Sunni and Shiite is absolutely right.  But have a look at this article from The Guardian.  Worryingly, religious distinctions seemingly closer to home give him equal trouble.

Durie also found other inaccuracies in extracts from the McCain memoir. For example, the suggestion that McCain's grandparents on his mother's side were descendants of Scots Presbyterians who "suffered the privations that were the fate of those who had remained loyal to the Scottish crown" in the aftermath of the death of Queen Mary.

"Mary Queen of Scots was Catholic. She was executed in 1587 by which time the Presbyterians were well in charge, so why would there be 'privations'? This is a mangling of history, or at best a misapprehension of it," Durie said.

Sunni/Shiite.  Catholic/Protestant.  Whatever.

Gee, you mean that McCain isn't

1. Smart
2. Honest
3. Accurate
4. Trustworthy
5. Well-read
6. Intellectually curious
7. Capable

Tell me something I don't know!

Hey, as a practicing (meaning still trying to get the hang of it after five decades)Roman Catholic, I would be glad to have Senator McCain over to my church during Holy Week to learn about genuflecting correctly, say a Rosary, sing a few songs in Latin, and--hey, why not!--discuss our obligation to cherish and support the poor, the strangers, and the elderly. Actually, most of my progressive Protestant friends are pretty big on that last item, but the Latin and the genuflecting and the Rosary, well, not so much.

On a serious note, this continued pattern of disconnects with realities known to most of the high school kids in my little northwoods town is beginning to be alarming. Senator McCain, as I understand, wishes to be trusted with the teetering economy, our damaged image among the other nations of this world, and the (insert awkward silence here)nuclear weapon codes. Might it be fair to expect more?
