Legal Counsel to Reagan and Papa Bush Endorses Obama

Just posted on the front page. Can't discuss it there, but we can here. Who is this Republican, and why is he endorsing Obama?

Douglas W. Kmiec is Caruso Family Chair and Professor of Constitutional Law, Pepperdine University. He served as head of the Office of Legal Counsel (U.S. Assistant Attorney General) for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Former Dean of the law school at The Catholic University of America, Professor Kmiec was a member of the law faculty for nearly two decades at the University of Notre Dame.

He explains his reasons pretty well. A key factor is this:

Our president has involved our nation in a military engagement without sufficient justification or clear objective. In so doing, he has incurred both tragic loss of life and extraordinary debt jeopardizing the economy and the well-being of the average American citizen. In pursuit of these fatally flawed purposes, the office of the presidency, which it was once my privilege to defend in public office formally, has been distorted beyond its constitutional assignment.

Obama's edge over Hillary and McCain in that respect is pretty obvious.

A bit more on Kmiec here:

I sure as heck wouldn't object to having this guy's highly regarded perspectives standing behind and endorsement from the same. There is another guy - Bruce ICantRememberHisLastname that is a highly respected professor of Constitutional law and an author of several books who was previously considered right leaning by almost everyone else who has, in the last few years railed against the Republican machine and especially Bush and co because of his disregard of so many things.

Bruce Fein - a real stickler for civil liberties is the guy's name - he has spoken forcefully against Bush's attitude and some of his actions. He hasn't endorsed a candidate either way - but you get the sense that someone willing to revert many Bush changes is needed and he isn't suggesting any Republicans.

The most i can recall Hillary saying about this, was some time ago and noted that she would look at some of the newer executive 'powers' and then consider 'which should be changed back.'

Well with encouraging words like that (you know when you can parse just about anything as well as she thinks she can; a much stronger statement repeated by her three times a week would at minimum be needed) I just know I can rest peacefully at night!

Just another reason for disposing of the old and bringing in the Obama.
