It's Time To Pass The Baton

avatar

Who in the congregations today will carry the baton of leadership. There are those who want to stop the baton from being passed to the next generation.  They use suspicion and fear to drive a wedge between the generations.  The result is a gap between young and old.

It's time we all stood up and demanded the baton be passed to the future generations and that the older generation, while they be our heros and guides of the past, they should step aside by accepting what is to come.

What if the older generation say 'no thanks, we think we will just keep it for a while?'

The netroots are mostly younger, mostly urban and overwhelmingly male. What appears to be an overwhelming consensus on the net is actually a rather close run thing in the wider population.

I am not that bothered about the age of the baton holder. That is how we ended up with Tony Blair in the UK. A youthful, forty something looked to be the answer to John Major, a man who ran away from a ircus to become an accountant. And we all know where that ended up.

Right. Follow the lemmings over the cliff. Bush was cuter than Kerry, Barack Obama is cuter than Hillary.

Obama cut in line over Alice Palmer, tried to do so with Bobby Rush but he's entitled to the Presidency because the newbies who bought into the ReThug line about who Hillary is because that's what they grew up with want their turn right now?

The real question is who would make the better President not which generation wants what and when.

You kiddies of the "Obama Generation" are so impatient! (And judging by a recent feature in the NY Times, that impatience applies to Obama, too.) Look, JFK's generation held the presidency in this country for more than 30 years, and through seven presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1. The "baby boom" generation has held the presidency for only 16 years and through two presidents: Clinton and Bush 2 (and since the real power behind the throne in the current administration is Dick Cheney, who predates the baby boomers, I'm not sure Bush 2 actually counts).

The average time between generations is 25-30 years. If you don't mind (or even if you do), I'd like my generation to have at least one more shot at the apple before you push us off into a nursing home.

But AJM is right; the real question is who will make the better president, and right now, I'm not convinced that person is Barack Obama. Maybe it is, but he hasn't convinced me yet.
