Hillary Clinton vs. Laura Bush--who's more qualified on matters of national security?

avatar

A TPM reader DF made this interesting point.  If Hillary claims that being first lady gave her executive branch experience on national security, then so can Laura Bush.
And if you follow that logic, Laura Bush's proximity to power during her 8 years as first lady makes her eminently more qualified than Hillary to answer that phone at 3am.
Laura was there during  9/11 and has been there for 8 years of fighting terrorists, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the threat of a nuclear-empowered Iran.

Point taken. If Hillary becomes the Democratic nominee, I will write in Laura Bush as my vote.

Good choice there! Of course Laura Bush wins, hands down. What experience she must have gained from all the reading out loud she has to do, the memos, dossiers, meeting minutes, national intelligence estimates, putting post-its on the right countries on the map, figuring out the right Saudi family name to put on the first plane out, etc., the true heavy lifting. Imagine how she might have altered the course of history when she got mixed up and stuck the red dot on Iraq instead of Afghanistan!

You know who else is more qualified Hillary on foreign policy? SAMANTHA POWER.

If HRC becomes the Democratic nominee, I will write in the Cookie Monster as my vote.

For the record, I'm certainly not the first person to raise this point and unfortunately I can't remember who I first saw do it, but I think it's a pretty good indicator of the fact that many brains are running on "power conservation mode" during this election.

Just remember: The media is against Hillary Clinton. If you keep repeating it, it becomes true.

Don't forget Chelsea and the twins!!!

What about the pets?

Barney in 2012!!! Oh, and he's a Scottie, so don't tell him anything off the record.

Ha!

Whoa....good one!

Don't be so hard on Hillary. She's got lots of experience answering that 3 a.m. call at the White House. Problem is it was always Bill saying he was going to be a little late.

Come on, now you're just stealing Maher's material. ;)

Poor Laura, I do wonder what she does all day, without the running the country behind the scenes and saving the world from itself.

Clinton's new line is apparently that she wants us to let her keep us "safe." I hear her Wyoming ads were about "safe"-ness in health care, the economy, etc. The other line is "I want to be there for you." Reminds me of a certain candidate's "I feel your pain." The overall message is clearer and clearer:

"Don't pay attention to that exciting man over there telling you you'll have to do chores and homework and think about things. Come here, sit still, and I'll give you some crayons and playdough so you can just stay quiet and let me do all the work. Would you like me to make some cookies?"

Wow, even I think I should get flamed for that one.

I think Tina Fey said it best: "I am on television expressing opinions in a funny way!" And where does she get the nerve to try out those edgy glasses! Whoa-- slow down, or you might fly right off the Paris fashion runway. Hillary only needs her glasses when she answers the phone at night. A personal story: I once asked Hillary Clinton what she thought about the Berlin Wall, and her response is illuminating for this discussion. She said, and this is a direct quote, "nuclear weapons hawk town military submarine destroy destroy destroy harvard yale cookies." I don't think we are going to see this sort of nuanced approach from Consul Laura Bush anytime soon.

Hillary vs Laura... toss up.

Hillary, in her own words, on what the job entails:

"If a place was too dangerous, too poor or too small, send the first lady."

At first gloss, this reads as almost too ridiculous for serious comment, but let's consider what's really going on here.

I'd suggest that the intended audience for Hillary's line is not us voters, but the old dog himself: Bill.

Having heard her take on the job, it's no wonder that Bill has been secretly working to keep her out of the White House.

Whether or not he's actually managed to steal a peek at the list of dangerous places she's scheduled the First Laddie to visit, the message has no doubt been received: payback

Mikeyleigh says it better than I could:

Josh just got through ripping Hillary on her "puffed up" claims of foreign policy experience on the main page, saying the media has basically given her a pass on the issue. He doesn't, however, as has become habitual here, give quite the whole story.
1. 1. Macedonia: It is true that the borders between Kosovo and Macedonia were opened the day before Hilary arrived for discussions with the Macedonian president. It is equally true that gestures, foreign policy movements, pronouncements, etc. are made sometimes days, sometimes mere hours before official visits. It might (and let me emphasize might) not be too much of a reach to say the borders were opened because of Hillary's impending visit as an official representative of the US government. In any case, she did have extensive, meaningful discussions with Macedonian officials above the refugee situation during this visit.
2. Northern Ireland: Josh labels George Mitchell as a friend of Hillary. Yet to date, he hasn't backed either Clinton or Obama in the race. Mitchell does state that Hillary was instrumental in bringing into the discussions women's groups which helped bring the Irish discussions to a successful conclusion. And, Rep.Peter King (R.NY), certainly no great fan of Hillary, has stated that she was quite involved in discussions with various elements within the IRA about disarming the various para-military groups in Ireland.
3. China: Hillary delivered a stern address to the Chinese government during a period when the Clinton adminstration was pressing China hard on human rights issues. Her speech included enphasizing the rights of women as well as basic individual rights such as freedom of religion and freedom from free of political persecution.
I realize bashing Hillary in quite in vogue here these days. Still, Josh ought to be a bit more truthful.
Now then, since some might see these accomplishments of Hillary's as meagre, might I suggest that someone list three accomplishments in foreign policy crises (and please, let's make it a crisis situation since Kosovo and Northern Ireland certainly fit that criteria) that Obama has to his credit.

Laura Bush is not in the same league intellectually as Hillary nor does she seem to take an interest in foreign policy (the same goes for her husband and administration). At least Hillary visited over 80 countries and met with world leaders, even if just for tea. Not that it makes much foreign policy experience but it is still significantly more than Obama who was "community organizing" (whatever that means) when Hillary was on the Board of Wal-Mart (nothing wrong with that, a lot of lower income American shop there and it's one of the few stocks that seems relative safe; actually shows corporate experience).

avatar

The question is not whether Hillary's meetings 'for tea' amount to greater foreign policy experience. If she thinks so, she's welcome to use that argument.

The problem is that she said that McCain - the Republican nominee - is better suited to be commander-in-chief than Barack Obama. This same McCain, note, wants to continue Bush's policies (apparently, Bush now has LOTS more foreign policy experience than any of the candidates running for his office, so we should all follow his lead?).

I don't care what you think about McCain - or about Bush, for that matter - Hillary is deliberately damaging her own party's prospects in November. If she wanted to run for president, maybe she should have given some thought to which political party would suit her better. She campaigns just like a Republican, after all, and she even seems to like them better. Well, they can HAVE her. I will NEVER vote for Hillary Clinton, for any office, under any circumstance. She's convinced me!

...she said that McCain - the Republican nominee - is better suited to be commander-in-chief than Barack Obama.

Unfortunately for dems, he is.

Nothing wrong except the union busting and outsourcing that she was railing against in Ohio.

So now you're endorsing a republican for the White House...

What an odd discussion. The difference between Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton? There is not enough room here to tell all you Clinton bashers how wrong you are. The differences are stark. Mrs. Bush is a lovely woman and I certainly would not attempt to critisize her as a wife and mother and she certainly has been gracious in her role as first lady but that is where it ends. Hillary Clinton worked in public service long before Bill ever showed up as a politician. Standing up for children and the disadvantaged. Even on the board of Wal-Mart, for which she is often maligned, she stood up for women's rights, prompting Sam Walton to call her a thorn in his side. Macedonia, Kosovo and standing up to the Chinese government on human rights and womens rights. I would be hard pressed to find that kind of thing in Mrs. Bush's resume and there is nothing wrong with that but you cannot compare the two. And while we are on the subject, we would also be hard pressed to find that kind of experience in Obama's resume. It is funny to hear the Obama supporter flipping all of this, the double standard is incredible. The bottom line is that Sen. Clinton has had a lifetime in the public eye doing the kinds of things you would want a leader to do and Sen Obama has such a thin record there is simply no way to know what he truly believes, how he would act in most situations or what he truly believes in except some elusive change. We are at too critical a point in our country's history to trust the oval office to someone who simply has not proven their ability to reach for the stars and meet the challenge.

avatar

So would it be fair to say that a key part of Hillary's foreign policy experience was a speech she gave in 1995?

avatar

I say Barbara Bush is more far more "experienced" than Laura Bush or Hillary Clinton. Barbara's husband and son have held office for a long time, she's probably traveled a fair bit herself. World leaders or ordinary citizens, everyone knows her! Go Barbara!

avatar

Hillary Clinton has claimed all of this foreign policy experience ,in part, as a result of having been so close to president Bill Clinton. Then where is her explanation for the enforced silence on the "genocide" (a word that was not allowed to be used by that administration) during April to August 1994 when 800,000-1,000,000 Rwandans were, by means of low tech, hacked to pieces. She can't have it both ways simultaneously. Either she has the experience from her association with the Oval Office and its record of calculated silence or she was just doing the First Lady tea scene. It is amazing that Bill Clinton had and still has such a high standing with the Afro-American community given his empty apology and after the fact refusal to act or speak the word word "genocide".

avatar

Isn't it really all about how we are going to save the little blond white girl on the railroad track?

If Hillary becomes the Democratic nominee, Monica Lewisnki should be considered for Hillary's Senate seat to represent NY. Her closeness to Bill Clinton must have given her the experience.

Ha! Ouch. But yes, are we so "family values" that we believe concubinage is less significant, from a foreign policy standpoint, than marriage is? I hope our society can move beyond these stereotypes.

avatar

And if Obama is elected, Larry Sinclair should be nominated and confirmed for, you know...Secetary of the Interior. wink/wink

Head on over to Smoking Gun. I think there's some underwear for you to sniff there. For you...hog heaven...

That cigar he used is more of an insider than HRC.

Thanks for posting here Gary Cohen and letting us in on that important crap. Borok is always interested in what his republican bretheren are thinking.
