Have We Reached a Point of No Return?
The competition for the Democratic nomination has become increasingly bitter. No matter who you think is at fault, you can be sure that there are people who support the other candidate who believe the same thing about your candidate.
I'm beginning to wonder if we've passed the point where either candidate can heal the wounds and hard feelings of the other side after being nominated. If not, the nomination may be a prize not worth winning. I know that the blogosphere is not representative of Democratic voters in general. But I've seen increasing numbers of comments on varying blogs that say "If X is the nominee there's no way I'll for Y. I'll vote for McCain first (or not vote, or write in X).
One thing we have learned from the recent unpleasantness (if we didn't already know it) is that there are still people in this country who are not willing to vote for an African American for president, and some of them are Democrats. There are undoubtedly people who feel the same way about voting for a woman.
If the Democratic Party is not united behind whoever our nominee is, we're going to lose. I think putting John McCain in the White House would be a disaster for not only the Democratic Party, but the country.
In the days before the delegates were chosen directly by voters, when a party could not coalesce around a single candidate, it was possible for party leaders to do whatever it took to get a candidate, even if it meant nominating a dark horse who wasn't one of the leading candidates.
I don't know if that could even be done today. One, I don't know if there would be a candidate that both Obama and Clinton would enthusiastically support, and I don't know if the voters would accept the legitimacy of a nominee who few if any voted for in the primaries.
I don't have any answers to the situation. I am increasingly concerned about the increasingly harsh words that are being spoken on behalf of the two candidates and what it may portend for the general election.

Here's what I don't understand. I - and I'm sure other Barack Obama supporters - would have a LOT of trouble voting for Hillary Clinton because of what she's done and said recently, because of HER behavior in the last few weeks of this campaign.
But I hear Clinton supporters claim that they could never support Obama because they dislike Obama's SUPPORTERS. How can that make sense? Barack Obama doesn't even know I exist, let alone have any control over my postings.
Unlike Clinton, Obama has remained steadily positive in this campaign. He's replied to Clinton's charges, but that's all. And he's gone overboard to give her her due. Clinton supporters, how could you blame him for anything, except that he's just better than your candidate? I really don't get it.
Yes, I'm worried about the Democrats coming together after this, too, but we had no problem until a few short weeks ago when Clinton started going relentlessly negative. Before then, BOTH campaigns were running a reasonably positive campaign, and we'd have had no problem supporting either one of them. But since then, only Obama has stayed positive. Not all of his supporters have done the same (myself included, no doubt), but how can you blame the guy for that?

Let's not revise history to make the Clinton's look better. They had been dishing dirt since last summer. It got really nasty in December and the only thing that drowned it out was Huckabee's freaky Xmas ad.

Yet, they do. See here for an example. It seems like Bizarro World to me, but they seem sincere. If Obama is the nominee, Democrats like these don't come around, we could lose.

How about drafting Al Gore at the convention ...
Seems far fetched, but the further this goes on the better the idea seems.

WCG, very well said. I am astounded that anyone at all has voted for Hillary during the past few weeks.
No matter who ends up in the white House, I see no escape from the USA's downward spiral. No one in Congress cares about anything except their own power and privilege, and the public still gets its philosophies ready-made from the mainstream media. We have a lot of growing up to do.
