Ferraro, Buchanan and Racism

avatar

Some related points...

(1) Ferraro compared her being chosen to be the Vice Presidential candidate and Obama running to be the Presidential candidate, but there's a big difference: You get selected to the Vice Presidential candidate, and factors like race and gender may well figure in, deliberately and consciously. That's not the case with being Presidential candidate (at least since the days of the smoke filled back room). You run to be the Presidential candidate. You take your campaign to the voters, and they vote. So I don't see the comparison.

(2) This has been commented on in various places, but -- especially given Ferraro's comparing of her own Vice Presidential candidacy with Obama's run to be the Presidential candidate -- she was clearly impugning Obama's qualifications. Not -- as she claimed later -- glorying in his support from the African American community.

(3) As for Pat Buchanan and his comments in support of Ferraro: Please. Buchanan has long been a racist. He's been around long enough and has enough charming traits to have become beloved, but he's still a racist. He's like a beloved old racist uncle. He has a lot of good political insights, I suppose, but not on the subject of race -- unless you want to count unwittingly revealing a particular strain of racism that is out there.

Comments (2)

Ferraro is a dope. She projects her tokenism onto Obama, while trying to hold the opposite view re Clinton.

Buchanan is beneath comment.

Senator Obama, are you going to fire the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? Obama, the empty suit.
