Did the DOJ Target Spitzer?

From today's New York Sun story, "Prostitution Case Features Prosecutors of Corruption":

During a court hearing in the case, at which the four people were arraigned, it emerged that all three of the assistant U.S. attorneys assigned to the prosecution are part of the U.S. attorney's public corruption unit. One is the bureau's chief, Boyd Johnson III. The unit investigates wrongdoing by both elected and nonelected officials and bureaucrats at various levels of government

Why was the federal public corruption unit investigating a prostitute ring? Was Spitzer the target all along?

Much as I hate to say it in this way, even if they did indeed target him, if he'd done nothing, he wouldn't find himself in this mess.

Spitzer has proven himself to be a complete fool.

Agreed. If the arrows stay in the quiver, the target is usually safe...

(D'ya see what I did there?)

Why do we consistently let the republican perverts get away with their anti-sex campaigns?

Given the packing of the DoJ with Bushies, the DoJ has the responsibility now of proving that prosecution of democrats is not politically tainted, whether he is presumably guilty or not.

Nailing a couple of prostitutes is not at the same level of creating a quasi-fascist oligarchic state where all means are justified in order to stay in power or accrue wealth through cronyism, patronage or war.

Hardly the point.

The foolish thing Spitzer did is the same foolish thing Clinton (Bill, that is) did: Give the opposition the very club to beat him over the head.
