Democratic Personality Test
This morning I've been thinking about the split in the democratic party. While I think the arguments for why Senator Clinton or Senator Obama would make a better president or a stronger general election candidate are real and have merit, for this exercise I'm going to suggest that both sides are equally right. The democratic party has been taking a year long personality test, and we all fall to one side that is just as valid as the other. The glass is half full, and the glass is half empty. Some people would choose flying as a super power, others would choose invisibility. Some people dream about riding a giant marshmallow, others dream about dragonflies eating their own eyes. Neither side is better. As Mr. Rogers would say, "I like you just the way you are."
Change.
If you're an Obama type, you see change as changing the political discourse. You believe that we can be and should be better than we are. Even if it is naive to believe this, we should aspire to be better anyway. Nothing will change if you don't even try. If we believe in change together, it isn't so naive after all. Americans aren't as stupid as our pandering leaders and media think we are. We want our leaders to talk to us like adults. We want our media to stop appealing to the lowest common denominator. The other side of the aisle are not our enemies. They are our neighbors. Their opinions matter, and if we extend the olive branch and include them, maybe we can all move forward to a better life together.
If you're a Hillary type, you see change as finally smashing the highest of high glass ceilings. Bush and Clinton administrations are polar opposites, and electing Hillary will change us back to where we ought to be. The political discourse will never change. Politics is dirty. We should be thankful that Hillary is willing to get neck deep in it for us and for the greater good. The fight with the other side will never end. After putting up candidates that couldn't show any fight until after they lost general elections, it feels good knowing Hillary will show up to the fight with a rusty screw driver in one hand and a sock full of batteries in the other. The GOP have been the uncle that sneaks into your bedroom at night and makes you feel bad in your naughty place. Someone has to make them pay.
Electability.
Obama type: McCain has tremendous crossover appeal to independents and moderate democrats. Obama has great crossover appeal to intellectual conservatives and independents. Obama's youth, positive message, and charisma trumps McCain. Obama wins over independents. Obama has brought in an entirely new voting bloc, young people that give a shit and vote. His broad coalition and crossover appeal in purple states expands the democratic majority in congress. I don't want to be a debbie downer, but that majority might shrink if Hillary is the nominee.
Hillary type: Listen, I don't think you know how serious this is. We are 0-2. We can't afford to go 0-3. Forget about the purple states. We have one shot at this thing. It's not going to be pretty, but Hillary will get the job done. I like Obama. I really do. If this wasn't so serious, and if he wasn't threatening our one shot at this, I'd be singing his praises still and eating up his speeches when he campaigned for Hillary Clinton. I'd be saying, "Wow, I hope she picks him for VP." or "Holy shit. We could have 16 years in the executive when this guy lines up in 2016." Yeah, the GOP probably can't wait for another shot at the Clintons, but the Clintons know how to win. These last eight years have been too much for me. I just want to win.. Don't you?
Disclosure. I'm an Obama supporter, but in the spirit of unity, I want to let Hillary supporters know I like you just the way you are.

"If you're an Obama type, you see change as changing the political discourse"
Fair enough.
My version on Hillary would be this:
"If you're a Hillary type, you don't focus on the political discourse. You focus on rolling up your sleeves and getting stuff done".
Just a thought.

and I would change that to "If you're a Hillary supporter, you support her causing more political discourse."

Great post, and I think your assessment is spot on. Also, I'm sorry to hear about your uncle.
