Anger Management Classes for Blog Commenters!
I don't know if these exist, but perhaps they should. It seems that every political site or blog I visit lately has some great, well-reasoned comments and some, well, how do I put this?--some comments that make me picture hordes of red-faced individuals hunched over laptops drooling rabidly while spewing hatred and venom.
I guess we should be glad that most of them limit this palaver to their online personas. I guess we should be glad that they're typing instead of re-loading.
But mostly, I'm wondering if we should be talking about Universal MENTAL Health coverage in America . . .

There is a theory out there as to why such uncivilized behavior exists on blog comments and such - see it here, it will make you smile - http://thepandapage.com/2008/02/24/internet-asshole-theory/

TPM seems a little better than most, perhaps a reflection of JMMs calm demeanor. What is amazing to me is that some partisan posters actually seem to think that their rudeness will be more convincing than sound argument.

I read somewhere on the internet yesterday (if I can find the link again I'll post it) that there have been people hired by an opposing campaign as well as the Republican Party to go out, register under many different screen names, and write negative things about Obama. At first I was taken aback by the idea, but then I went to one site and waded through the "hatred and venom" and sure enough, it was the same venom over and over again, under different screen names, with sometimes just a few words different. It puts it in perspective to think that you may not be seeing 200 different people who feel that way, but maybe only 20 who are pretending to be 200 - and were also paid to write it.
It also made me think - these people are paid to do this, but have they watched Obama's speech on Tuesday, recognized the message and the sentiment, and now feel dirty for what they are doing? It made me feel dirty just reading their comments. I agree with Donal - I absolutely discount hateful, venomous attacks, normally glancing at just the first couple of words long enough to recognize them for what they are and then skipping over them, while I enjoy reading insightful, sound arguments on behalf of any candidate (yes, even McCain.)
