The Greenest Candidate

avatar

Here is another example of talk vs. action.  By now, we all know that Obama voted for the Dick Cheney energy bill, showing a glaring lack of judgment and giving in to the lobbyists' demands.  However, he does talk a lot about and has a plan to move us towards a greener nation, just like Hillary.  But who actually acts?

From:  http://washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080219/NATION/576162886/1001

Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama have called for strict mandatory limits to control greenhouse gases but they aren't leading by example — each has failed to pay for offsets to cover all of his campaign's carbon emissions.

Campaign finance records for 2007 show that neither of the two leading presidential candidates has spent money to independently cover his campaign's "carbon footprint" — the amount of carbon emissions emitted by the planes and vehicles the candidates and their staffs use for travel, or by the computers and headquarters needed to run a presidential campaign.

Though both campaigns say they practice energy conservation, Mr. Obama offsets only some of his airplane flight emissions, while Mr. McCain doesn't cover even that.

"They clearly should be not only buying these ration coupons, or indulgences, but they should be massively reducing their footprint," said Christopher Horner, author of the "Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming." "The fact that they're out front on [global warming] is where their troubles start."

By contrast, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, has made monthly payments to offset her campaign's "carbon footprint."

The concept is simple: Businesses and individuals can pay a company to plant trees or fund projects that produce lower amounts of greenhouse gases. The goal is "carbon neutrality," or paying for enough offsets to cover your own emissions, and it's catching on from rock bands to Congress. Even parts of the Academy Awards went carbon-neutral last year.

Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain have called for cap-and-trade schemes that would set a limit for carbon emissions and allow companies to trade credits among themselves. Mrs. Clinton takes advantage of a similar offsets market.

Mrs. Clinton spent $20,327 last year with Native Energy, making regular payments including one of $4,743 in December. At $12 per metric ton, that December figure would give her a monthly carbon output of less than 400 metric tons, or about 20 times the average U.S. home's total for a year.

The Moonie Times? I suppose desperate times call for desperate measures.

But who actually acts?

If the league of conservation voters is to be trusted, that'd be Obama.

It's easy to cast a vote. In fact, it's his job. But it's shows much more character to follow through on this during your campaign. Look at how much money he's pulled in! He couldn't act on his environmental "concerns"?

As even NG's post points out, he is acting in ways other than just voting. Also, if it's so easy to vote, then why isn't Hillary scoring 100%? (For that matter, why isn't Obama scoring 100%?)

How they'll do their job is one of the most important things we have to decide!

Also, note the contradiction in the post:

They clearly should be not only buying these ration coupons, or indulgences, but they should be massively reducing their footprint…

By contrast, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, has made monthly payments to offset her campaign's "carbon footprint."

Of course there's a contradiction. The point is, though they should be reducing their footprint, the current state of campaigning requires them to fly all across the nation in order to meet with voters. So, who has shown a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint? Hillary leads on this one by big margins.

There's a difference between talk and action.

Big margins? They're both reducing their footprint. She's eliminating hers, and I do wish he was eliminating his, as well. What we don't know, and can't really judge is how well each of them is actually reducing the amount of energy they would otherwise be using. Let me be clear by stating this again: I wish he was eliminating his footprint as well.

However, you seem to be dismissing the importance of them doing their job well. That's important, too, right?

avatar

Yes, very important to do your job. I'm suggesting it's also important and shows dedication when you follow through in your (somewhat?) personal life. He said he's going to ask Americans to chip in, but if he's not being a leader, most won't follow.

And on the biggest slap in the face to environmentalists, the Dick Cheney 2005 Energy Bill, which was written by the lobbyists, for the lobbyists, Obama voted for it while Hillary voted against it. I find that to be very poor judgment.

Again, you're looking at one bill (i.e., cherry-picking) and not looking at his reasons. I agree that it's unfortunate that he voted for it, but if you look at that report card I provided a link to, Hillary Clinton has not just as many unfortunate votes, but more, as measured by the league of conservation voters—an organization I hope you'd trust.

Ben,

I've looked at your link several times. He got a lifetime score of 96, her 90. Both good, right? But it doesn't show which bills were scored and how.

What I do know is that this 2005 energy bill was widely derided in the environmental community, was a REALLY big deal, and Hillary voted against it, while Barack helped to pass it. If you can provide the bills she voted against, or if they weigh the bills on the impact of environmental implications, I'd be happy to take a look.

But can you not admit that it's important to be in front on environmental issues both in session and out? Both in Congress, on the campaign trail, and beyond? And that she has taken the lead here?

But can you not admit that it's important to be in front on environmental issues both in session and out?

I have already said as much…

Both in Congress, on the campaign trail, and beyond?

Absolutely.

And that she has taken the lead here?

It appears not, it appears so, and I have no crystal ball.

Now, as for details, you can see their 2006 report cards here. Be warned that on the year this particular report card (the most recent one they have) covers, Clinton was given a much poorer score of 71 compared to Obama's score of 100. So, if anything, the "trajectory" of their environmental record is diverging (hers for the worse). Having said that, I don't actually buy into that trajectory argument. You can see her individual years here, and his here. For that year, she was dinged for voting for offshore drilling. A vote I'll hope you agree was a mistake.

avatar

Thanks for the links. Offshore drilling vote=big mistake. However, as I've asserted earlier, the implications of the 2005 Energy Bill were more far reaching and broad. Ironically, it included

- Providing incentives to companies drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico

among other terrible policies.

If the trajectory had gone in the split you suggested, it came back fully in her favor in light of her campaign's environmental actions.

Its important to note that he talks a lot about this on the campaign but isn't doing it himself. Seriously, I know a lot of people really like Obama and I really really want to. But I'm so scared of getting my hopes up and then being disappointed that its all marketing hype. I am a die-hard environmentalist and it is just inexcusable to pay so much lip service to the environment.

PLEASE EMAIL OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN AND TELL HIM TO FOLLOW-THROUGH WITH HIS PROMISE.
