The Doer Has Done Herself In

By Courtney Goodloe

Once stenched it is damn near impossible to cleanse.

You know how when you step in some dog-poo -- you can try and try and try hard as you might -- but can never quite rid yourself of the smell -- short of obliterating your shoe?

Well, what will be the final, pathetic, Clinton campaign dirty-trick was the work of a staffer who missed Rove 101 but fancied themselves a master.  Was plausible deniability a casualty of incompetence, obliviousness, arrogance or just plain suicidal tendencies?

As they have all along, her campaign once again seems to miss the point that whatever else you do, your fundamental mission should be to attract voters -- no matter how preordained you think your win should be.  It seems so simple that presumably one should not have to explain this to professionals, but apparently we do.

The voters she needs to be attracting and re-attracting (not repelling) have either drifted from her camp or were in Obama's already -- which by very definition shows a part of their nature to be optimistic.  This group does not respond well to turd-hurling and will now be permanently alienated -- even if she were the nominee come the general.  Not to mention the increased likelihood of super-delegate defection as a response to trying to take the Party down with her.  And if Obama's the nominee, she has clearly abandoned the possibilities of a spot in his administration, or preserving an honorable Senate career, or running for anything ever again.

Clinton's staff seems to have perfected the multi-tasking of the Titanic -- managing to re-arrange chairs, while playing in the band and stepping over women and children all at once.  For anyone looking for prioritization - finding this photo is what her staff has been spending its time doing.  This, after time and time again, the only negatives that rise when she goes negative are hers.

This apocalyptic scorch, slash and burn betrays a level of cynicism which astounds.   If you accept my premise above regarding what her strategy should be, then what possible logic could reside in their approach except that she's taking the ball home?

Contrary to the idea that the Republicans are relishing the 'dirtying' up - I'd imagine that their strategists are quite annoyed at the fact that Clinton is using up all their potential ammunition for the general.  And in the process, her campaign is giving Obama's an opportunity to further perfect its graceful deflect, defend and rise above moves.  Whatever doesn't kill you...

Oh - I thought of another possible explanation for her strategy - which I credit to NY Daily News columnist Errol Lewis.  His theory, offered early on, is downright Machiavellian.  That since the Clinton camp benefits from lower voter turnout, it in fact aims to disgust the electorate enough to induce apathy.  This was before we grasped the strength of Obama's campaign and its supporters' passion.  And abandoning losing strategies does not seem to be Clinton's strong suit.

Always several steps behind the electorate, the Clintons missed the part where we chucked the smelly shoes - a lesson lost on them while they continue to wear theirs.

It might just be a sign that I need to go to bed, but I'm not sure what you're talking about here. It seems like you're talking about the Drudge picture. If so, I'm not aware that this has been confirmed to have come from the Clinton campaign independent of the claim Drudge has made. You'll forgive me if I reserve a little skepticism when it comes to Matt Drudge.

However, I will say that no matter who is behind this, the implication is clear: The picture is meant to play against irrational fears of Muslims.

The Clinton campaign has denied it. Even though they've already fired a staffer for sending out e-mails claiming that Obama is Muslim. Good for them. That was the appropriate response and I'll give them benefit of the doubt on this as a result, but the doubt still remains.

Regardless of who is responsible for this, what's important is that it be recognized for what it is: a racist attack against Barack Obama meant to play on the climate of fear and ignorance surrounding Muslims as a result of the attacks of September 11th, 2001. The response from the Clinton campaign, that Obama's campaign should be ashamed for suggesting that the picture is divisive, is absolutely ridiculous and feigns ignorance. The suggestion is not that the picture itself is divisive and they know it. The content of the picture is no different than a picture of a Kennedy in a kilt. To suggest that Obama campaign's objection to what's happening here is that they, themselves, find the picture to be divisive is crap. The racism that already exists is what is divisive and this picture is meant to play on it.

If the Clinton campaign honestly has no connection with this, then they should deny it unequivocally (instead of having a 'not to my knowledge' denial dragged out of them) and condemn this tactic on its face. Instead, the response they have issued is a way to try and create the appearance of distance from racist overtures and yet still use it against him. ("What's the matter, Barack? Ashamed of your heritage all of a sudden?")

Failing to condemn this will only encourage more of this type of tactic should Obama indeed become the nominee. After all, why shouldn't the GOP use tactics that his own party won't condemn?

The ball is in your court, Clinton.

Yes - the Drudge photo.

Thanks for thoughtful analysis.

I read the Clinton campaign's non-denial denial (the I am not aware that it was us/don't know of approach) as a tacit yes, and their history in this area, and who suffers sufficiently from the attendant myopia to mistakenly believe they'll benefit immediately - as enough for me to draw the conclusion. This is right out of their surrogacy playbook - the one that used Kerrey, Cuomo, Johnson, Shaheen et al. to raise all the specters.

I think the choice to plant it in Drudge was to induce the exact response you're having - knowing the disgust he raises they used him so there'd always be enough reason to have a bit of nagging doubt re whether they were the purveyors.

I believe that the purpose is to try to stem the flow of demographics to Obama that are confounding them and pundits alike - or what they perceive to be those demos - all those people who before this election cycle were thought would never be able to vote for a black man much less one w/ a foreign-sounding name and international ties. They figure if there was still anyone just a bit on the fence or reticent about same - this might knock them off. As things seem so close, they don't care how few votes the tactic garners.

If one accepts the conventional wisdom of late, there'd be no benefit yet to the Repubs.
If they're beginning to see Obama as the likely opponent, they'd have held this for when it would be most impactful - in the general - instead of giving him the earliest opportunity to shoot it down. Finally, for the general, McCain specifically does not benefit b/c presumably the only voters who'll be in play in a contest w/ Obama are independents or the sorts of Republicans who would be turned off by these tactics. The people in his party that would respond to this stuff don't need convincing or scaring away from the other side.

McCain's swift condemnation of Bill Cunningham's tirade today indicate that either McCain is genuinely interested in taking a higher road than the Clinton campaign or that, at the very least, he recognizes that this is potentially more damaging to him and than it is advantageous.

I agree completely - thought so the minute I saw it. He followed the playbook that her campaign seems to have thrown away. And I must say even though he should have known exactly what Cunningham would be spewing - his apology came off as sincere.

And apparently now he's brought Cunningham's wrath on the airwaves for same - so it appears at great political risk of re-alienating the conservative base he'd just rallied against the Times - this wingnut is beloved by them.
