Report: Clinton Campaign May Try To Poison Obama's Pledged Delegates
The Hillary Clinton campaign has reportedly thought up a new strategy for winning the Democratic nomination that is even more divisive than the super-delegate route: Poisoning Obama's elected delegates so that they cannot appear at the convention. "I swear it is not happening now, but as we get closer to the convention, if it is a stalemate, everybody will be going after everybody’s delegates," a senior campaign official told the Politico. "All the rules will be going out the window."
There are several problems with this strategy, including the fact that DNC rules prohibit delegate poisoning. Beyond that, such a strategy would increase the perception among voters that the nomination does not represent the will of the voters and that Clinton is a mean, calculating b-word. It's worth noting that the Politico story quotes a Clinton official predicting that both campaigns will poison the pledged dels, which could result in a delegate-less convention. While the state of Colorado may sigh in relief, such an eventuality could pose further problems for the Democrats. In the event that no delegates show up for the convention, DNC rules require the nomination be determined by Rochambeau, a.k.a. Rock-Scissors-Paper. Clinton is widely reknowned as an expert Rochambeau player, and the Obama camp is already complaining of unfairness. A high-ranking Clinton strategist smirks, "These were the rules that all the candidates agree to. You can't change the rules in the middle of the game."
Late update:
Hillary spokesperson Phil Singer is adamantly denying a report this morning in The Politico quoting an anonymous campaign official suggesting that the Clinton campaign will poison Obama's pledged delegates. According to Singer:
We have not, are not and will not pursue the pledged delegates of Barack Obama. It's now time for the Obama campaign to be clear about their intentions. The Obama camp has not yet put out a statement on whether they'll poison or otherwise incapacitate Hillary's pledged dels, though they very likely will soon.

I think you're wrong. I checked and there isn't actually anything in the DNC rules specifically forbidding the poisoning of delegates, though a senior party official not affiliated with either campaign noted that it would be considered to be "extremely bad form."

Some poisons merely make one sick to the stomach, and can cause a bad case of diarrhea. Other poisons may cause death. I hope for Hillary's sake she is only using the former and not the latter.

Late update from camp Obama:
Clinton has been winning rochambeau tournaments in Washington D.C. since her days in the White House, and a former Bill Clinton staffer has confirmed that she was granted a secret cabinet position as head of the shadowy R.S.P.A. with the official title of Rochambeau-Masta! The intrade markets have been showing significant movement towards Clinton due to the growing expectation that Democratic race may ultimately be decided by hand gestures.

Can you believe this shit? This is exactly the kind of msm crap that put Bush in the WH - say anything, believe anything. We have Doug Wilder claiming that there will be riots if super delegates vote (which they are prone to do, considering the fact that they're delegates) and Donna Brazile threatening to quit if they vote for Clinton - these people couldn't care less about this party or country - and they have the nerve to claim Clinton will say or do anything. "It's a bitter land indeed, where all the trees have thorns..."

BevD,
I'm sure you have everyone's sympathy regarding the stress you're going through with a son in Iraq.
But I don't buy your complaint that you "HAVE to read this mocking, shitting on our own candidates from so-called dems who ought to know better."
I saw you making similar complaints on another humor piece on TPM reader blogs. You clearly did not think it was witty or entertaining. You complained that the piece was beneath your intellectual dignity. You complained that TPM is suffering a shortage of "serious" discussions, yet it was obvious from the post's title ("Hillary, the Wedding is Off) that it was not going to be a "serious" piece.
And yet, in both cases, you've returned to the posts and the threads AGAIN and AGAIN to subject yourself to more outrage. Why? You don't make sense.
If these posts are THAT upsetting to you, maybe you should just avoid them.

I'm a little confused by the last two posts. Are the two of you suggesting that Clinton does not actually intend to poison Obama's delegates, or rather is it that you think Obama will get his ass whipped at rochambeau? Or did you mistakenly post to the wrong thread?

No, I am implying that if you're any indication of the future of political discourse, I would advise them to drink the poison.

I see. I'm glad that you're not bitter.
Fortunately for survival of the Democratic delegates, political satire has a very long history but has never succeeded in replacing serious political discourse. Such an event would also be a disaster for the satirists themselves. If everything were satire, there would be nothing left to parody.

When you're walking the floor at night worrying about your son in Iraq, let me know how goddamned funny you think it is. Yes, I'm bitter - I'm bitter that day in and day out I have to read this mocking, shitting on our own candidates from so-called dems who ought to know better. I'm fed up with it.

BevD, I sincerely hope that your son comes home safe and sound very soon. I'm genuinely excited about Obama, and I also think that Clinton would make a good president. I believe that either one has a strong chance of winning in November, as evidenced by my serious McCain post: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/02/overestimating-mccain.php
That said, I will not hesitate to ridicule any candidate or leader when they say or do something stupid. I believe that it's far better to laugh at your leaders than to take them too seriously. 99% of the shit that has been dumped on the candidates has been excreted by enraged hacks who take their own chosen candidate far too seriously.
And really, this post wasn't even targeting the candidates themselves but rather their ridiculous advisers, the byzantine convention process, and the journalists who made a such a fuss of over the whole stupid story, TPM unfortunately not excluded.
Of course, you really don't need to read my posts if you can't stand them.

You know, Laura, this is the kind of crap that gets our candidates beaten up every single election. This isn't all just "good fun", this is an attempt to demean and ridicule Hillary Clinton despite Genghis's protests that he was just having a laugh. I call it shit because it is shit, and like all the other "media" that constantly pushes this tripe what it really is, is passive/aggressive, meanspirited and short sighted. No, I don't think it's "witty or entertaining", I think it's nasty and cruel and Maureen Dowd crap. I'm going to call writers on this kind of bullying "fun" whenever I see it, whether it is here or anywhere else. Is it particularly amusing to you when a Maureen Dowd calls Obama "Obambi" or claims that "he is like a supermodel that can make a meal out of a piece of Nicorette gum?" Is it so hilarious when she spent years ridiculing and shitting on Al Gore and other dems? These articles have consequences, there are REAL people behind these public personas. It is hurtful to them and to democrats. I don't think it's so goddamned funny to insinuate that Clinton wants win so much that she'd poison delegates. I didn't think it was so funny when Chris Mathews compared Gore to "Clinton's bathtub ring" and claimed "that he'd lick the bathroom floor to be elected." How would you like it if I did a hit piece on you? "Oh, I was just parodying your style, Laura, just good old fashioned humour, you know."
Now kindly stop parsing my words, interpreting my meaning and making claims that I wrote something that I did not write and maybe try a little empathy exercise - imagine how you would feel if someone continued to pile it on you with a relentless barrage of shitty, nasty remarks - all in good fun, of course.
It is a hit piece and Genghis knows it.

BevD,
Nobody is piling it on YOU...what are you talking about???
I admit I'm new here, but I haven't seen anyone making "shitty, nasty remarks" about YOU. Have you really experienced that??? If so, that really sucks. Nobody should say ugly things to you, of course.
You're offended by Chris Matthews and Maureen Dowd when they make fun of Hillary -- well, so am I. But it's obvious they don't like or respect Hillary. But I know that Genghis, Billy Glad, and I aren't hostile to Hillary--in fact, I'm pretty sure all of us LIKE her.
Yeah, some of us are trying to joke around -- mostly making fun of some of the ridiculous media "narratives" out there; but for some of us, it's not with the mean spirit you associate with the likes of Dowd and Matthews.
I'll admit, there are a LOT of posters on TPM right now who ARE hostile to Hillary. Genghis and Billy Glad and I aren't.

BevD, I tried to show you respect and earnestly explain why I believe that satire is important, but you reacted with venom and bile, and so...
Yes, you are correct, it was a dirty, underhanded, unconscionable hit piece against Hillary Clinton, paid for in fact by the vast right-wing conspiracy that seeks to discredit, disdain, and dismember Democrats the world over. Laurajordan is wrong about me. I hate Hillary Clinton from the depths of the black shard of coal that is my heart, and I have pledged not to rest until she has been obliterated. My intention was to make it seem as if I were ridiculing the charge that Clinton was planning to steal Obama's delegates while furtively planting in people's minds the possibility that she really does plan to poison his delegates, defeat his paper with her scissors, and eat his children. (I didn't mention the eating children part, but I knew that people would read through the lines.) And I would have gotten away with it too, had you not valiantly exposed my scheme to the world, or at least to the 3 people still following this thread, one of whom is my mom unless she's gone to bed already, in which case it would be 2 people.
Not only have you exposed me. Your righteousness and purity has converted me. I now realize that I have caused great sadness to Hillary Clinton, her advisers, and a zany poster named workerbee, and I hereby repent. From now on, I will heap nothing but earnest praise on all Democrats, who, I must now admit, can do no wrong. I will join you in your quest to expose all humor as a tool of Machiavellian malintent, except for the immortal Family Circus and a few early Cosby Show episodes. When you write your promised hit piece against the fiendishly fiendsome laurajordan, I will submit comment after comment that says "Ha laurajordan ha" and "LOL" even though I won't actually be laughing out loud because I don't do that anymore. If I am still tempted to chuckle at a witticism by Maureen Dowd, I will bite my tongue, or Maureen Down's tongue, whichever is closest, and I won't release it until the urge has passed or the tongue has been severed, whichever comes first. If I am still tempted to chuckle after my tongue and Maureen Dowd's tongue have both been severed, then I don't know what I'll do. A man has only so many tongues. But I hope that you will appreciate the gesture.
Phew. This righteousness is hard work. I hope that you have a nice night and I look forward to more inspirational posts from you.
PS laurajordan, thanks for your support. I'll send you your check later.
PPS Thank you, Wisconsin.
