Open Thread: Frustrated Blogger Edition
Lots of bugs, lots of despair...
Got any tips?
Here's two: Emma is using delicious to track posts (My Kingdom for the Tracker link!!!). Me, I've found if you get timed out when posting a comment (and see the "Registration" error page...), if you hit the back button, select and copy the incredibly brilliant words you just spent 10 minutes writing, hit the forward button, click on the "original post" link, sign back in, and re-post your copied test, well, it ain't pretty, but it works.
At least the brilliance ain't lost.
Please post any tips, ideas, complaints you have, or maybe just what's cookin' for dinner, in the comments.

Thanks for the tips.
I have always formatted my comments off board, and saved same.
For my true feelings, try my post over here.
Just the way it is . . .

I hear you. There's a lot of frustration out there right now...you're not alone.

Idea -- Movable Type supports feeds. Can a comments feed be turned on? The MT site has example code for both site-wide and per-entry comments feeds.
That would be a big help, although I suspect some people won't want to use an RSS reader...
Couldn't that also be turned into a web page on the site?

"Couldn't that also be turned into a web page on the site?"
Yes, it could.
But, an easier solution would be to simply create a module. More than likely, it would have to be listed as straight chronological and not nested. For an example of the code.

Yeah, I'm not either (although I would love the salary). It's more of a hobby now that I have my site pretty much how I want it. Pretty trippy what you can learn just by getting your hands dirty.

It keeps logging me out. Yes, frustrated blogger here!
I'm trying to remember to save. But I think of it as karma. Learning patience. Forebearance.....

What do you mean, you don't get it back? Are you using Safari?
Are you saying it returns you to the page, but the comments are then gone?
February 6, 2008 4:12 PM | Reply | Permalink
I have Firefox. And when I click the green arrow to go back.... it goes nowhere. More error messages. It simply won't reload. (and I need to log in again!) Believe me, I've tried and tried. They're gone. Wait till you read what I just posted!

Has anybody noticed that posts are literally disappearing?
Posts from earlier today are GONE!!!
There is a gap. Between 2/6 and 2/3. Those posts, from the new Cafe, are GONE!!!!
This saddens me. Soon ours will be gone too.
Simply GONE.
Here's how it works. When posts fall off the page and you click "all readers posts" it only give you the posts from today that fit on that page. There is no way to find earlier posts from today... Or yesterday... or the day before yesterday....
And if you even click on a writer's name, for example Fly on the Wall's name, right there in his/her blog a post from today... and others are GONE!
This is not good!

TheraP, I'm not sure what you're seeing.
Regarding the historical posts. The "All Reader Posts" are either based on date, or N-number of posts. If you scroll to the bottom, there are weekly archive links like on the main TPM site. If you want to read posts from 2/5, then you'll need to select the weekly archive from 2/3-2/9.
Regarding missing posts in the user profiles. All of mine seem to be there just fine (with the exception of those that haven't been imported from the old database).

Click on my profile...doesn't work at all.
I've been checking profiles, and there seems to be a wide range of how they're working, either not, like mine, or some people have some of there posts, etc, in there, while others are perfectly intact. Not only posts, but the "latest comments," too.

Did you have to do anything different for your account reclamation, like get Andrew involved or something?

No. It happened after, a few days after in fact, I was up and running. I know, because I went in, I set my settings, etc.
A few days ago, it just stopped working.

Ok, I'll try to identify here in one place the problems I'm still having, as well as suggested improvements.
First, though, cscs's suggestion on how not to lose the contents of a submitted post if it doesn't go through has worked for me so far.
Problems:
1. At my profile, most of the posts I've recommended are not recorded in the left-hand column.
2. At my profile, the comments begin with something I wrote back in 2005 (maybe the first thing I posted here?) Also, I would prefer to have just the beginning excerpt from each comment listed with a link to the whole thing, instead of text for the whole comment, so that I can access more comments more readily.
3. Maybe it's just me and I was careless or screwed it up but I've had a couple of comments that didn't end up in the position in the thread where I thought I had placed them. In your open thread yesterday I thought I was replying to you but the comment posted far away in the thread.
Things I'd like to see improved (perhaps some of these are intended, but either not functioning properly yet or still in the works):
4. A direct link to the reader blogs on the home page, so we don't have to scroll all the way down to get there.
5. A way, requiring no more than one link away from the homepage, to find out easily if someone has responded to a comment we have posted.
6. Likewise, a way, requiring no more than one link away from the homepage, to find out if someone has commented on a blog entry we've posted.
7. I find it somewhat difficult to tell when a comment is a reply to someone else, versus a comment in response to the leadoff post in the thread.
I understand the global tracker is not an option with this system, unfortunately. It would be vastly preferable if a way could be found to enable denizens to accomplish items 6 and 7 above--that is, access both our blog and comment entries--at one site location, though.
8. A space somewhere on the site, not difficult to identify and get to (link from the homepage), for "backbench" discussions among denizens, as others have suggested.
Appreciate all your hard work Andrew, your commitment to finding out what problems we are having and what improvements we suggest. I will be patient. What helps me a whole lot is if you can let us know on a regular (I'd say daily at this point in the new rollout) basis a) what is being addressed and b) realistic estimate of by when you expect it to be addressed. This helps me avoid nagging you and wasting your time with requests to fix things that are already being worked on, like I surely have done here. Thanks.

I keep seeing formatting errors on the blog posts. I thought it was just people making mistakes, but it happened on the post I just sent in, and I know it looked fine in the text box when I wrote it.
Seems like an extra line break is added at the first line of each paragraph.

Indeed and I noticed in the posting(blogging) edit box, I had hand keyed html only to have everything with tags disappear.
As an aside Thanks for the auto check on the reply box.
