Obama's Electability
Kerry a Vietnam war vet was made to look like a coward versus Bush who pulled strings to stay stateside. Dukakis had Willie Horton blow up in his face years and years after it happened.
The right wing attack is already starting up and here are there main points of attack.
1. The William Ayers, or unrepentant member of the weatherman underground connection. I've already seen two hit pieces directed towards Obama on this and there's just not enough there. The two met once, being introduced by a third party and never met again. Ayers gave Obama's senatorial campaign 200 dollars. That won't fly.
2. Rezko - Unless the come up with more, this won't stick either. ABC and CBS NYTimes have gone over this again and again and can't find an illicit connection between Obama and Rezko. However, the trial starts soon and there may be new things brought to light. I don't think there will be, but you can't discount it.
3. Rashid, a Palestinian-American activist may cause the most trouble for Obama. Obama did speak at the Arab American Action fundraiser. Rashid doesn't have any "proven" connections to the PLO, but has made some anti-Israeli remarks. WorldNetDaily says that fundraising for the Palestinian refugee camps somehow provided money for terror attacks on Israel, but they don't provide evidence, just guilt by association. I noted this WND article was picked up by Foxbusiness and much of the juiciest stuff was taken out, possibly because it can't be substantiated. However I think this is their best opening. There is no doubt Obama and Rashid know each other, as a local representative and another representative of large local minority group it makes sense.
So here's the Right's attack: Ayers, domestic terrorist, Rezko, corruption and Rashid international terrorism. I really think the Ayers won't fly and the Rezko corruption also seems a non-story. But this will be thrown out again and again in attack ads and blogs and by McCain surrogates to give a sense of being true. They are hoping to paint a picture of Obama as unpatriotic, unAmerican and sympathetic to terrorists. Just as they painted Kerry a war veteran as some sort of coward versus Bush who stayed stateside in a national guard.
How will this work out in the General Election? Will Obama remain effectively teflon, as he has to Clinton's attacks or will these start to stick and will he be seen by moderates and swing voters as too extreme?

It's going to work out as it did in 2004. Clinton campaign has not waged a dirty campaign against Obama. The GOP will not have the same scruples, and they will go after him. On top of that, what exactly will Obama offer that will differentiate him so from McCain? A watered-down health insurance plan that will be both very costly and non-universal? A "responsible withdrawal" from Iraq, if "conditions permit"?
All McCain has to do is repeat Obama's full name a million times between now and November and he wins. How many Americans even know Obama's middle name right now?

Thank you for expanding on the Weatherman underground movement. When someone first mentioned it, I thought it was some obscure joke, since to me Weather Underground is an excellent resource for getting local weather reports. It wasn't until you mentioned it in greater context that I went to Wikipedia to get more answers.
