More On "Green" Hillary (Her Accomplishments)

avatar

Yesteday, I posted about Hillary Clinton's efforts to offset her campaign's carbon footprint, taking the lead above the other campaigns.

When digging into why I'm proud of her and what she's accomplished, as asked by Ben Hocking, I came across this.

While she served on the Wal-Mart Board, though she couldn't do much to stop the negative actions against unions at the time, she did manage to push women's and, importantly here, environmental causes.

Mrs. Clinton had greater success on environmental issues. At her request, Mr. Walton set up the environmental advisory group, which sent a series of recommendations to the company’s board.

When it came time to pick members, Mrs. Clinton, who led the advisory group, reached out to at least two colleagues from the McGovern presidential campaign — Mr. Mauro and Roy Spence, who headed an advertising firm in Texas that did extensive work for Wal-Mart.

Under her watch, the advisory group drew up elaborate plans. Consumers would bring in used motor oil and batteries for recycling. Suppliers would reduce the size of their packaging. And Wal-Mart would build stores with energy-saving features.

Wal-Mart executives put much of the program into place. In 1993, for example, they opened an experimental “eco-store” in Kansas, with skylights and wooden beams from forests that had not been clear cut.

One executive derided it as “Hillary’s store” because it was more expensive to build than the average Wal-Mart, but several of its features, like the skylights that cut energy bills by reducing the need for artificial lighting, were widely copied across the industry.

“We were on the leading edge of something that is being mandated now,” said Bill Fields, the head of merchandise at Wal-Mart in the early 1990s who worked closely with Mrs. Clinton on the environmental project.

I think this shows an underlying theme here of her being on the forefront of environmental issues throughout her career.

Well researched! I'd like to see more positive posts like this one.

I know your job around here is to Hillary hate, but I specifically mentioned the union thing in my post. She did precisely the type of thing that Obama pledges to do as President, which is bring people together on the issues he can. She chose her battles--women's rights and environmental causes--while on the board. She was the first female on the board, the First Lady of Arkansas, and in no way could afford to push back on the one thing the head of the board was absolutely adamant about.

Even if you want to dismiss the envirnment she was working in and say she should have stood up for unions regardless, can you not at least admit that she does do well when it comes to "green" issues? Even your enemies can do something right once in a while.

Indeed, this does speak well of her. I think that it is good that even Obama supporters like myself keep in mind that there are many things to recommend Sen Clinton.

Brian Ross pretty much demolishes those claims in that video. All in all her accomplishments on the Walmart board for women, unions, or anybody else but herself amounted to her accomplishment on healthcare: nadda.

From Wikipedia:

"Along with Senator Ted Kennedy, she was the major force behind the State Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997, a federal effort that provided state support for children whose parents were unable to provide them with health coverage.[139] She promoted nationwide immunization against childhood illnesses and encouraged older women to seek a mammogram to detect breast cancer, with coverage provided by Medicare.[140] She successfully sought to increase research funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma at the National Institutes of Health."

Care to try again?

Kudos to you, Ben, for trying to elevate the discussion.
