HTML Mystery Solved
Through some back channel communications with another poster I think we've figured out the problem.
Apparently the posts with unrendered HTML tags are posts from other sites or blogs that have been cut and pasted into the TPM text editor.
If you wish to paste a post from your blog, for instance, into the TPM you will first need to paste it into Notepad or some other plain text editor to strip the HTML tags out of it, paste the post into the TPM text editor box, and add the tags back in using the buttons above.
I apologize for cluttering up the board if everyone has already figured this out.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but I don't think that really solves all the problems with posting.
I, for example, don't have a text editor, none, nada. And there is nothing on My Profile page to adjust settings of any kind. I wasn't aware that anyone has one until you started mentioning it.
That's ok with me, I'll live without it. But I suspect it is the situation with many older users as well, from seeing what they post. (The user Notrol (something like "Alphonse al Qaida" is his second user name,) for example, has done some test posts on html, others have too, maybe you've seen them. It's pretty clear they have no text editor.)
On the old software, there was an option to shut off the text editor. I did that, and typed my own html, because I didn't like how it worked especially for cutting and pasting blocks and how it was difficult to remove unwanted code that it put in. I am suspecting that those who had it shut off at the transition didn't get the new text editor?
Here's the problem with all this: there is no simple answer for all the posting problems you are seeing. You can't give correct advice for everyone. Some may indeed be confronting what you describe. It's pretty clear to me that others are not, though.
There's no one answer to help everyone is part of the problem. Seems that lots of people are seeing different things. Some have current comments on their Profile, some have old ones. Some see the correct number of recommends, others do not. Some have all their recent posts on user profiles (especially the contributors) others have none. The archive has been added in in some places, not in others. Everyone's seeing and using something different, it's quite simply: STILL A BIG MESS.
If the text editor is a browser issue (which I doubt), and management is reading this, I am using IE 7.0 with Vista.

p.s. What would go a big way to solving lots of these problems is getting a preview function going. Then at least each individual would be able to figure out what they were dealing with.

The text editor is accessed by clicking on "Blog Now" at the top of the page.
I guess I should have differentiated between posting and commenting. I was addressing posting.
The comment text box does not include the HTML buttons which the posting text box includes.

Really weird--It wasn't there before, but I just went again to the "Blog Now" page and refreshed it, and I suddenly got the text editor buttons for the first time. Maybe people aren't always seeing them?
I haven't made any blog entries, but I have checked that page often enough, because I didn't have any access to the My Profile page until like a week ago; before that all I could get was a Movable Type error message.
I didn't mean to minimize your point, I do realize that many of the problems are from what you are citing, many of the blog entries do look like textbook cases of pasting formatted text into a text editor.
But I spent some time the other day surfing back routes and alleys of this site, and I saw a lot of evidence of shifting around of functions and other things, archive/database pieces clearly being added and changed piecemeal.
I guess what I wanted to point out mainly is that it's hard for anyone to give useful instructions when a site is not "finished" and is still being worked on. For example, on other threads people are giving input on the Recommend system, but I see evidence it is not working properly the way it is supposed to yet. (Even I did that recently, saying on another thread that main TPMCafe page Recommends were turning up on My Profile and could be used to track threads. Turns out I was wrong, the new ones I recommend from the main page are no longer turning up, it's like it's stuck on the first ones I did.)
Here's another example: normally, looking at a Reader Blog page mess like the one here, I'd bother to recommend an automatic page break put in that editor so that people can't use up so much space on the Reader Blog page. But then I think maybe they intend to put one in, because something is obviously doing that to the posts of the contributors on the main page! How come it's not happening on the Reader blog page and is on the Main Page? Who knows?
It's like there are different systems going on allover the place.

It's pretty obvious to me that the message board software TPM selected is ass.
