  • Look at what you said: "has been associated with". So what? Is that the only meaning that the phrase takes on? Does the meaning of the phrase change depending upon the context in which it is used? If the answer to the aforementioned questions is no and yes, respectively, then Scientific et al were clearly out of line by bringing racism into a conversation in which race clearly did not belong.

Now, if Scientific had said that that particular phrase was somehow offensive, then I could understand. But that's not what he did. He went to the Urban Dictionary and tried to use it as the sole source on who can use words and in what phrases or contexts they can be used.

Again, Scientific was an ass for trying to be the pc police.

  • Everybody like who? I'm from New Jersey and I've never heard anybody call another person a spade. The only spade I know of is a digging tool and the pip on the card.

  • Actually, there's a difference between using the phrase "let's call a spade a spade," and using the word "spade," by itself, as a derogatory term.

And I'm pretty sure that all of the people getting in step behind you have either used that phrase before or have heard other people use the phrase and have understood its meaning based on the context in which it was used. So, given the fact that you probably understood what Mitchum was saying and still tried to use the Urban Diction, as if that is somehow the ultimate encyclopedia of slang, makes your transparent allusion to racism even more malicious.

So, thanks for being an ass. Nice try at being the PC Police, though.

  • This is true.

  • Honestly? You honestly believe that? Aside from the ad hominem attacks, which have nothing to do with how she writes a column, you can't possibly take everything Maureen Dowd says with any kind of sobriety.

The reason why I find her columns so insightful is because she twists reality by writing through a sardonic/sarcastic lens. So she inevitably sounds like an "airhead" because the columns are meant to be read beyond it's veneer of superficiality. In other words, her articles presuppose that you are willing to think critically, to look beyond what appears to merely be a psychobabble conversation between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and instead look at the complex clash of psychologies.

Therefore, Maureen Dowd's articles are not only about the psychologies of the people she writes about, but they're also a psychological test for anyone who attempts to read them. Her articles are so refreshing precisely because they're psycho-cultural explorations. She is looking at the social psychology of gender, which in itself is a historico-cultural construction.

  • Wow! So, I guess everyone dislikes Maureen Dowd, except me, huh? I happen to think her columns are critically insightful.

  • Bye the way, does anybody remember the Clinton campaign's proclomation that they had raised $10 million within 24 hours after her Pennsylvania victory?

If so, was that ever debunked? Was it indeed true? Was the Clinton campaign lying? And where are the filings from April? Are they avaialable yet?

  • Making financial decisions in a primary campaign is completely disanalogus to making financial decisions in the White House. These are two completely different tasks, which, in turn, require two different ways of thinking.

With that being said, my questions was always: Given the fact that her primary campaign was grossly mismanaged, if she ever were to get the nomination, how would she manage a general election campaign? That seems to be the more important question.

  • Are you honestly saying that Hillary Clinton experienced no sexism? no mysogyny? Come on.

If Barack Obama had lost, would you also be claiming that racism or discrimination had nothing to do with it? that he just ran an "inferior campaign"?

  • Nope, this was only in a letter that I sent to my English teacher the summer after I graduated high school.

By the way, sorry, I thought I was still in high school when I wrote this letter, but I had actually already graduated. I though it was two years ago, but when I re-read the letter it was written right after I had gotten into college.
