An Open Letter to the New Yorker
Hello New Yorker, I like your magazine. I like the poems, I like the short stories, I like the long news pieces, and the occasionally uproarious cartoons. Seeing your magazine also fills me with a bit of nostalgia as my...more »

When Does an Intransigent Media Narrative Become a Lie?
I'm a little bit of a media analyst -- not only as a hobbyist wonk, but by training (I'm a doctoral candidate in political science at the University of Chicago). This actually makes me pretty media tolerant. Journalists have a...more »

Um, what "misogynistic attacks"? You really can't cry MISOGYNY every time the woman is criticized. And I don't see why the examination of the strange circumstances surrounding her labor an delivery should be seen as woman-hating. She's the one who brought that whole narrative into the public eye and it's really weird. Likely she's telling the truth, but honestly, the whole thing is odd, why not ask questions? And, the whole idea that "liberal blogs" have been spreading this is odd. I'm a dedicated reader of all the high traffic liberal blogs except Kos and i never even heard this meme until yesterday. You might try giving your fellow "progressive liberals" the benefit of the doubt before slandering them and the Democratic party for behavior that hasn't been anywhere near inappropriate.

I'm still mystified by the anti-Obama sentiment among some disgruntled Hillary supporters, but whatever. The thing that I think is most interesting is the fourth "lesson" you point to. The idea that there's something Obama could do to "win over" the most loyal and embittered block of Hillary supporters is disingenuous. The only thing he could do to satisfy that constituency is to hand over the nomination. And even that would not win him any affection from dedicated haters. I actually don't blame hard-core Hillary folks for not coming to like Obama, were the tables turned there's nothing Hilliary could do to make me like her, but I would have voted for her because I'm a Democrat and because it's perfectly clear to me the John McCain is very much in the insane neo-conservative tradition that's been wrecking our country for the last eight years. I find it astonishing that this necessitates any explanation at all.
We're all grown-ups right? I mean, the Stones said it best, "you can't always get what you want," but if that prevents you from perceiving what you need and trying to get it, then there's no one to blame for the inevitable bad outcomes but yourself.
I find this whole back and forth entirely ridiculous. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

You're so strange. I'm always mystified by this argument that Obama has no brain or is an "empty suit" that's a charge that can't stick because it's so obviously untrue. He came from nothing and went to Harvard, ending up a Professor at the University of Chicago Law school a perennial member of the top five in the country. It's fine not to like Obama -- different strokes and all that -- but saying he's stupid just makes you look downright retarded.

politico is reporting that Plouffe emailed a correction -- Obama himself has $72 million. The DNC raised $22 million, making the Dem total $92 million nearly equal to the Republican total of $95 million or so.

I'm sorry the Muslim stats are from a Pew poll, not Newsweek.

13% of Americans believe Obama is a current, practicing, Muslim and nearly half believe that he was either raised a Muslim or went to a Madrasa in Indonesia according to the latest Newsweek poll. A majority of respondents on a WorldNet Daily Poll opined that the New Yorker cover "isn't too far from the dangerous truth about the Obama family."
You don't have to make assumptions about the intellect of the American people to recognize that a large plurality actually believe many of the lies depicted on the New Yorker cover. Now, those people probably do not have subscriptions to the New Yorker, but regardless many will see the image on the cover (not the articles inside) and for many the joke will be that it's true not that right-wing nutters think it's true.
The political context is what makes this image inappropriate, not the image itself.
